A young lady showed up at my mother's house today, engaging in an "exercise to improve her public speaking skills." She was selling magazines, but you could gift them to a serviceman overseas. Mom bought a subscription, ("$15 of which will go to a charity of your choice"), and wrote a check ("Not to me - to the publisher."). As soon as she told me, I googled the "publisher" - SYN, Inc.

Yep, it's a scam. The kids are probably innocent, as they're promised scholarships and travel awards, which this company then never delivers for them. The magazine subscriptions are overpriced and even then often not sent.

We've talked about this, and decided that whenever Mom feels compelled to "help a worthy cause," she will tell the person, "Sounds good, but you'll have to wait until I've checked out your company on the internet.

I called the local police, but when they caught up to the group, they told them they needed to go to city hall and get a solicitation permit. We've stopped payment on the check, and her bank looked up the business and said the warning was to call the police, but all it did for us was send them somewhere else. Some banks charge a fee to stop payment on a check, but hers didn't.

There's one flaw in your scam suggestions....that person should not have gained entry into granny's house! There are bad people out there, and a woman alone shouldn't be opening her door to anyone she doesn't know! Sad, but read the papers and you'll know why I say that.

Ann is so right on that one!
I live in the middle of no where, but still have an entire security system,
cameras included. My kids wave to me at the cameras, but at least I can sit here
and see who's around, including the census lady that neglected to wear ID!
She told the police that it bothered her neck, but was told to wear it anyway.
How about pinning it on the jacket?!
