WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

Trying not to sound like I'm either bragging or whining here, I thought some of you might find my recent history on TQOTDs a bit bizarre.

I don't have the exact numbers, but I've been on a very nice (lucky?) streak with my questions for most of this year. I'm prety sure I've correctly answered at least 90 out of my last 100 questions. I just ended a streak of about 25 TQOTDs in a row.

However, I'm pretty sure I've missed 5 of my last 10 wager questions! All 10 have been in my strongest categories, so I'm basically getting only 50% of these (supposedly easier for me) questions correct. In other words, I've either been really unlucky or I'm choking at lot lately! (I hope it's at least a little bit of the former--last night I missed a Movies & Television question that only 10.4% had answered correctly.)

And that means, over the last few months, I'm at least 85 out of 90 on my non-wager questions, i.e, questions that should be tougher because they're my weaker categories. As you can guess, a whole bunch of those have been questions that have been answered correctly well over 50% of the time. Sure wish I used my tokens on some of those questions!

I'm fairly sure that my wager questions have been no harder than my regular questions -- I'm just stupid on a whole bunch of areas other than my specialty so naturally I do a bit better on my wagers than my other questions.
I broke my run on wagers (which had lasted 30 months) in May when I got a vocabularly word I'd never heard of and could not decide -- culpably -- between the right and the plausible answer.
Naturally the player who had been chasing me for a year (and had not got a wager wrong in that period) chose the same day to blow a wager too. And what are the odds of THAT?

My recent experience has been the same as Dave's.
Missed the last four of five; two movies and TV and
two vocab.

I know it's not a conspiracy, but right now I'm sitting
on two vocab, a movie and TV and a books and
author question. Those questions represent my three
best categories, but just thinking about wagering
gives me the hives.

O please Foogs, its not money, maybe just a little pride will be dented if you wager and get it wrong. All my recent wagers have been on Geography, Physical Science or World Events, with good fortune, as I have got the right answer. The questions were generally quite easy, I knew the answers, and my last Geography wager was about England, how easy do you get.

The last time I did two wager Movie & TV questions in a day -- saved for when I went up a level -- one asked the lead character's name of probably my favorite TV show of all time. The other asked for a contestant's full name in a 10-year-old reality show I'd never heard of (and which, I found, ran only four episodes). Talk about from the sublime to the ridiculous! Iirc, the latter question had a success rate of 9.8 percent. The ones under 20 percent always fascinate me -- *less* than random guessing?

I know there's not the personnel here for it, but it would be great to spot-check these low-percentage questions to cull out the ones that are hopelessly out of date or nearly impossible to answer.

How come you get to save up trivia questions? Mine disappear the next day!!!

Really? How odd. Mine are around for ten days, I think. How do you access them -- from the MySploofus link? When I click on that, I get notification of any unread messages and a list, by expiration date and topic, of my unanswered TQotDs.

Being able to stockpile questions is definitely handy if you are, for example, two correct answers away from going up a level but don't want to risk .8 points on a wager.

MickeyM, are you talking about the trivia question of the day (TQOTD), the Word Puzzle, or thr Wordround/Wordmatch quizzes? The TQOTD will stay in your "MySploofus" inbox 10 days or so, WP's reset every 12 hours (8 am and 8 pm) and WR/WMs are up for only one hour. If you are not using your TQOTD's as they come in, but they are still disappearing after one day, click on the "Help" at the top of your page and file a support ticket.

What Lamizell is referring to is how the savvy players only use their wager tokens when they are at the low end of a level (32.0, 32.1.etc.) that way if they miss it, they don't drop as far. Took me forever to catch on to this. Also, they save their best category for the wagers. I'm out of wager tokens right now, so I let my TQOTDs pile up until I get a bunch, then I will answer all of them but the Vocabulary until I hit a new level and win a token. Then I use it on my best category.

And I agree about the difficulties. One of my recent vocabularies was "Which of the following does not mean ______?" and the next one was "What is the language of origin of kluvgtdfds?" (Or something similar.)

Yep, I know where you're coming from. I have had the same experience. I seem to fail more often on my specialty, vocabulary when I have a wager too. I have tried wagers on geography too but gave that up when I kept messing those up too.

Thanks for all the info. I do know how it is supposed to work with TQOTD, it's just that it suddenly stopped working that way for me! I'll have to carefully document this for a ticket! I like to keep them so if I want to alter where I'm in the leaderboard (for obvious reasons) I can do it with something I'm fairly good at! But I lost two of them this way. Will not do the next three and store the info so I can write a ticket. Ann

It tells you the date when they expire to the left of the category. They should last ten days.
