This wordround question sounds like a comedy routine. I've read it 28 times and STILL don't know what it's talking about, lol.

Having the tinctures exchanged mutually; thus, if the field is divided palewise, or and azure, and cross is borne counterchanged, that part of the cross which comes on the azure side will be or, and that on the or side will be azure.
ANSWER - Counterchanged

ok. Here you go. What it means is gold and blue. "or and azure". A cross on field of blue and gold will be gold on the blue side and blue on the gold side. Probably so that it stands out in contrast. At least that seems to be what they're saying.

Linenlady - aka Diane - you are toooooo smart - that one had me going too - if I had half your brains I could be getting sub 20's on the wordround too. Keep it up!

Thanks Diane, the or and azure make a little more sense now, though I think I'll take Tuzilla's advice.

I believe they are describing a hearaldic device when used as a coat-pf-arms suchas on a knight's shield.

I am currently reading "The Once and Future King" to my son and they are always talking about the shield designs...gules, or, sinister, rampant...if you aren't used to these descriptions it's a lot of gobbledygook!

Oohh - I just got about 5 ideas for new quizzes!!

I've never read that one, but my favorite King Arthur books are the Warlord trilogy by Bernard Cornwell. Not exactly a kids book, though.
One of these days I'll get around to reading the original Arthur book, Le Morte d'Arthur, if there's a modern translation out there somewhere. I hated trying to muddle through Shakespeare in school. I'm not up for any more Old English punishment if I can avoid it.

Jumping on bandwagon - I just wrote a Heraldic Colour quiz - (in general history section). Might follow up with a devices quiz as well - but I think I may be beaten to it.
