ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS

Does anyone have a guess as to how many people actually participate in this trivia regularly? I'm thinking if I were overall 500, out of 14000, that is not bad. However, if I am 500 out of 501 participants, I need to find a new hobby!!!!!!

I wondered about that myself. My goal in wordpuzzles is to stay in the top 100 but if only 125 people regularly do them,,,,,,,well,,,maybe I should aim a little higher. Onward and upward!

Don,
More than once I have finished in 200 plus range. Guessing top 100 ain't too bad. Big thing is keepin' the 5,000 points you start with. At least to me.

Probably depends on what category you asking about. Some people don't take quizzes and only participate in the question of the day. One way to measure is the rankings at the beginning of the month. Take one quiz on the first day and get the minimun 100 points. Wait a week before taking another quiz and see what your rank is. That would be a indicator of how many Sploofusers take quizzes over a week's time.

The lowest position I've ever got in WPs was #227 - but they're my strongest game so I doubt if I was bottom even then! There are probably between 250 and 300 playing there.

The lowest position I remember getting for WRs was #77, a while back, but I just deliberately played to lose there and was only 38th on both WR and WM.

The trouble with WRs/WMs is that there are a handful of people who are so good at them that us ordinary mortals don't stand a chance of getting in the top 10 - except once in a blue moon with a following wind and a hefty dose of luck - and since the top 10 is the only place you can get any decent points I suspect most people don't bother playing them at all. The above (38th as bottom place) even indicates that *less* people are playing now than used to! Of course, if they were to change it so there were decent points on offer for the top 20 or 25 positions, they'd probably rekindle interest in them a bit ... (Justin?!)

As for quizzes, I think the suggestion of playing one quiz for your minimum 100 points at the beginning of the month and checking for your position a week or so later is probably the best way to find out. I may try it next month!

Thanks all for your response. I certainly agree with you that there are some real experts here. They bet more points than I can garner. I started out doing some challenging, but, the higher I got, the more I lost. I also do not score much in WP/WR so I play often to make up for it lol! I think I just enjoy challenging myself since it is so hard to compete with the pros. Let me also say that I truly respect those people, I am not bad-mouthing anyone. I will try some of the suggestions put forth. Again, thanks!

Jerry

Sargon - Surely you jest . Your advice is good but "wait a week'? I couldn't stand it.

Has anyone tracked the growth rate? Just curious.

Which growth rate are you referring to, Missashlee?

The overall numbers broke 10,000 soon after I joined, so about March this year, and it's now fast approaching 16,500 despite the fact that completely non-active ones will be removed.

On the other hand, from my earlier note, numbers playing WRs/WMs seem to be dropping, since I 'won' on position #77 back in the summer but deliberately playing to lose yesterday I could only get #55 during the busiest time.

Unfortunately I don't think there's any way to know how many people are active (as in playing most days/games) in TQOTD at all - and in WPs only if we run the experiment detailed by Sargon earlier, and unless anyone has done so in previous months we can only use that to track them from now on, and then only if someone's willing to repeatedly take one quiz a month and no more ...

Jerryew, my take on this as far as your second post is that challenging yourself to get better is what it's all about. I too cannot compete with the several lightning fast WR/WM players. So, it's in my own best interest to just marvel at how great they really are and admire them for their ability to do so. And every now and then, I get surprised by a message that says I won a 2nd or 3rd place. Most of the time I plod along at my 1000 points/hours like alot of others. But that don't stop me from at least trying. And I may learn something along the way, another bonus. My bosses hate me because I throw words at them they have to look up. Any normal blue collar workin' class guy has to love that.

I posted a message on March 13, 2006 about Sploofus closing in on 10,000 members.

Thanks, Berylm and Sargon. That's the kind of thing I was looking for. How fast is the membership growing?

I found your post, Sargon. I also looked back further and found an 11/26/2005 post that showed 7,322 members. Tedious, since there are over 20,000 posts in Salty Dog!

So, in about 4 months, the membership grew about 3,000 and in about 8 more months it grew about 6,000. Sort of linear over the past year at about 750 a month.

Going farther back, if I remember correctly, when I joined Sploofus in early January, 2005, there were slightly less than 3000 members. The 3000 mark was reached soon after, no later than February, 2005.

During the same period, Machiabelly was the top player on the all-time leaderboard. He was the first to make it to 1,000,000 (that's one million) points in late January, 2005.

Thanks Vettage, I think you pretty well summarized my feelings. Who said the Class System can't work? To keep in mind that this is a game, and to have fun are key. When I read of so much (at least some) anger, cheating, and what have you, I think sometimes it is best to be in blissful ignorance. I love to wallow in it LOL!!!!!

Thanks all

One final observation. Regarding w/r, and w/m, I stopped at one correct answer. That resulted in about position 50-60. I would assume that is the number of people taking those quizzes....
