As we bow our heads with family and friends to give thanks for the bounties of this table and the opportunity to gather in this way, let us also remember everyone else under heaven's light.

If we think to complain about the hassles of traveling to the gathering, let us be reminded of the millions who seriously risk their lives just to walk the streets of their town or travel the roads of their country.

While our biggest want at this meal might be for someone to pass the turkey and dressing, or mashed potatoes and gravy, cause us to remember those for whom a meal like this is impossible because this much food does not exist for their entire village.

When we bemoan the expenses of school for our children, especially the additional time and costs of sports, music and other extra curricular actives, remind us of the billions who will never have a chance to attend school because none are available or education is forbidden to them by repressive rule.

If our biggest medical concerns are the co-pays on our medical insurance or the price of elective procedures, let us be thankful for what is paid and the existence and accessibility of the medicines and care received. Let us also pray for those for whom proper medical care is a unaffordable dream, those who will die or suffer immeasurably for lack of available medicines and care, and for those who will be infected with additional illness from unsanitary medical care.

As we sit, safely in front of the television, waiting for the meal to settle so we can enjoy dessert, let us realizes the freedoms we enjoy in our countries and the safeties we can reasonable expect on a day-to-day basis. Let us recognize we are doing it without the reasonable fear that a missile or bomb might explode nearby, or a military action will involve our neighborhood.

No matter how we feel about the actions of our government, and the way it conducts affairs, or presents itself to us and the world, remind us to give a HUGE thanks to all who are in harms way on this holiday in defense of us and our freedoms. Let us wish them peace of mind, safety and your blessing as they pass this day, when they should be at the table with their families, in a foreign location eating a pale shadow of a family Thanksgiving meal.

Let us give thanks for the freedoms we have, and remind us to respect them by exercising them. Cause us to listen and try to understand the opinions of others instead of turning a deaf ear or railing against them because we do not believe as they do. Remind us that anyone, including ourselves, could "disappear" for expressing an opinion in many countries. Instill in us the desire to actually vote instead of simply criticizing our elected official or dismissing the importance of one vote. Remind us of those for whom voting is a distant dream, or for whom it involves long hours of lines in scorching heat or pouring rain to vote in elections that are often shams. Urge us to visit your house on days other than Easter and Christmas, and to respect the rights of other to worship differently. Remind us of those who cannot worship or live in under repressive regimes that dictate how you can worship.

Finally, spread your arms and shed your light on the world that we may find new ways to spread peace and reduce war, cure illness and fame, and heal those who are suffering, and allow more to join this feast next year with the feeling of having something to be thankful for. And after we depart this table for our respective homes, bless our returns home and bless us that we may all gather here again next year to once again offer our thanks to you.
