THE HAIKU THREAD

We had an ice storm earlier this week. And I was thinking that we see a poems pop up in here on occasion. So lets have a thread of it. I start with one from the day after the storm.

Icy world awakes
Sunlight sparkles crystal trees
A lone hawk watches

Alert the press to beauty
Falls short melting

Is this a Haiku - it's kind of off the top off my head.

traditional haiku have 3 lines of 5 syllables/7 syllables/5 syllables, but modern writers have altered a few of the rules.

Does anyone know
when I'm writing a haiku
must the sentence end

At line- or verse-end?
Or can I carry over
thoughts from line to line?

This is a serious question. I'm in Japan about to start work on a bulletin (details to follow) and I'd like to compose some haikus and would like to do it properly.

What about stress in the line -- are there any requirements as in latin meter?

Hi Barry.........Read the rest of the posts by Tuzilla: he explained that a haiku requires three lines........the first'un of five syllables, the second'un to be of seven syllables, and the third'un of five syllables.

Barry,

I haven't had access to Chat for a few days. From what I remember from my poetry studies, Haiku is traditionally written as one line in Japanese, but we write it in English as 3 lines of 5-7-5 syllables.

There is usually a concrete image that conveys an emotional depth (as in Buson's gorgeous haiku about stepping with a bare foot on the cold metal comb of his dead wife in the middle of the night).

There is usually a reference to a season or some symbol of a season such as cherry or plum blossoms.

Traditionally subjects such as sex and violence were avoided, so of course contemporary haiku use these, along with technology, usually highlight these themes, attempting to be ironic and cool (not necessarily a bad thing).

It can be end stopped after the first or second line with the final line acting as an explanation or qualification, but it doesn't have to. If it doesn't end at the end, but leads to another haiku, then it's not a haiku--you could call it a haiku series!

This is my superficial understanding--there are different names and characteristics dependent on the Japanese literary period in which the haiku was written, but most people don't even go there!
