UPDATE | 2007-02-01

Hello Sploofusers, it's February! Is it just me or are the days just FLYING by?! Perhaps it really is true that "the older you get, the faster time passes"...

Speaking of time, Sploofus' master database server is damn slow. Just give me 5 minutes in a room alone with it! It could very well emerge as a tangled mess of tortured metal, circuits, wires, springs and gears.

If you want to spare yourself from utter boredom, skip to the last line of this post now.

* * Begin Utter Boredom * *

This master server (I call him "Thomson") communicates data to many other database servers - and is responsible for keeping everything in sync. There is a table, known as the TQOTD_SENT table, which is encountering some difficulty, which in turn causes Thomson's memory to drop, which in turn slows things down, which in turn prevents Curie, Cavendish, Teller, et. al. from syncing quickly and *BAM* the site becomes sluggish. I restart Thomson and things are fixed, temporarily.

Now that the problem has been identified, I am performing an emergency schemaendectomy on Thomson. It may take another 2 days for him to fully recover.

At that time I must turn my attention to Fermi (an application server) and perform an essemteepeotomy to restore email functionality.

* * End Utter Boredom * *

Apologies for the server problems. Everything will be fixed in 2 days.

Ooooh I just got it, your talking about Sir Joseph John Thomson, Edward Teller, Henry Cavendish and Marie Curie.
Imagine naming servers after Physicists and scientist, I thought a server was nothing more than a glorified waiter. lol

Darn it I did it again, forgot to say what I meant to say.

TY for the update.

Heck yeah, ya name servers! Way back in the day when I worked for a small ISP, we named ours after the seven dwarves. heh. Plus, it's alot easier to feel 'vidicated' when the server is doing it's own thing, and you need to yell at it. Seems more 'satisfying' to yell a name than just 'Curses, you RP 8420 64 prcessor server!!!'

Gee...I wonder which one Justin and you would name Dopey???

Doc - the name of the server that actually does what you want it to. It tends to be the main one and if any of the others have a problem then they can get a check up.
Dopey - the name of the server that sometimes has problems reading the codes you want it to.
Sleepy - the name of the server that tends to be a bit slow. All the information going through it leaves it lagging a bit behind some of the others. Tends to need some wake up pills occasionally. Although a quick boot up its backside also helps.
Grumpy - the name of the server that works 99% of the time but has tendencies to not enjoy what it is doing.
Sneezy - the name of the server that works most of the time but seems to suffer from tendencies to 'sneeze' out some strange occurencies.
Bashful - the name of a server that is the newest of the bunch. Tends to be very shy to start with but with a bit of love has the potential to be good.
Happy - the name of the server that always works and never has any troubles ever. This is definetly the rarest type of server. If you ever come across this type hold on to it until scientists (or computerists) have found away to clone it.

Isn't a server someone who brings you food? If you got them from Hooters or McDonalds that would explain the crappy service.

Just trying to help.

I stupidly bet a wager token on a books question, ended up with a sport question which is my exempt category and lost my wager and my level points. While I was not going to get too anxious about missed questions, this is a bit more annoying. I'd wear the wager token loss, but would love to get my points and level points back. I realise things are chaotic, but maybe there needs to be an official place to document all these losses so that when things are back to normal they can be addressed.

I like doing the word puzzles, but I dont like the change where the red sploofus 'brain food' header keeps flashing at me between letters. I've just noticed it's doing it at other times too. The red flash is starting to give me a head ache. Can we get rid of that, please, and have it back the way it was? Cheers

I don't think the problem you had is related to the current goings on. I have heard that in the early days of the site, new TQOTDs that were unclassified accidentally got defaulted to Books & Authors. Since then, there has been an effort to catch and put those questions into their proper areas, but some may still be out there that have nothing to do with books.

My advice to you would be to put out a support ticket with all the details you can remember: The Question Number (seen on the screen with the result of the Question), or failing that, the question as best you can remember it. Mention the date of the occurrence, the amount of your wager, and whatever else you can remember. Finally, don't be surprised if this is not resolved immediately. Justin is a little busy right now getting the whole system running well.

Thanks for catching us up. I don't understand a word of it, but it sounds like you do - and that is all that matters.

Computers! Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em!

From the sounds of all you're dealing with and the fact that the system is not already reduced to a mass of tangled wires and pieces, I admire your restraint *grin*

You're awesome, Justin. Thanks for all you do!

Where does one post complaints? I was unduly penalized 25 million points (50 million if you count what I didn't win either) and want my due.

This morning my average rating for my quizzes was 7.7, it then slipt down to 7.4 within an hour.

It has just gone to 1. lol

Please fix this asap.

(i know it will get fixed soon)

I just checked a few other people profiles and none of theirs seemed to have crashed.

Oh well I may just have to send in a support ticket and if it can't be fixed, I will just terminate my account

Sun, 4th Feb '07 12:32 AM

Your AQR appears to be a commendable 7.7 - Perhaps I am confused, terminating an account would seem to be an awfully drastic measure?

sploofus (Justin) just to respond to you, what happened was I was writing a bunch of quizzes (for the future) and had just about written the 20th one whn my rating went down to 1 (although on my profile it said 0). I sent in a support ticket but a couple of hours later I decided to delete a few of the unlaunched quizzes I had and the average rating recovered.

Don't know why it happened, perhaps it is just a glitch or something but everything is cool now.

Yup. Still missing 4 qotd and just got burned for a showdown token with no question to answer. I'll gladly give up the qotds if you can just cancel the showdown and save me 35 million big ones!

I just logged on after yesterdays shutdown. I was going through the various options, and surprised at the quick response. Everything seemed to be working. I decided to try a challenge, and at the last screen, decided to wait awhile before risking points. I used the stop icon on my browser, but after going back to my control center, it appears that the challenge went trough, even though I never have seen the question. Any way that can be canceled?

hey justin - as buffalo springfield so succinctly put it: keep on keepin' on!
and to paraphrase national lampoon's "deteriorata" - be aware that a walk through the ocean of tears shed by sploofusers who have lost precious points due to computer problems would scarcely get one's feet wet.
cheers & beers, dude!
