CINCO DE MAYO SPLOOPHILLY PHEST '07!

May 5th has been chosen by an exceedingly low voter turnout for the Sploofus springtime get-together in Philadelphia! Sign up here and post info about your travel plans as it becomes available. Those who live in the area please advise us if you can assist in locating hotels, events, and transportation. Anyone with organizational skills, please help me, I have no idea what I'm doing.

It's very important we have a good idea of how many we will be; I need to know how many avocados and how much salt and lime.

Ole!

Count me in! I'll be glad to help, though I do not know the area. I'm willing to do whatever I can.

Sounds great! Thanks for your efforts Smoke!

Several questions:

Will there be trivia-related activities? I don't do well without answer options to choose from!

Is there a good zoo in Philadelphia? I think I remember one, but those years are a blur. If so I will bring the family.

May I drink something other than tequila? Anything . . . I have bad memories attached to that stuff!

And finally, does anyone there know of a Cinquo de Mayo related activity? It would be a blast to celebrate with Mexican food and music.

Q: Will there be trivia-related activities?
A: I can promise there will be at least one trivia-related activity of about 2 hours. I can also promise it will be fun, competitive for all, and some of it will be multiple choice.

Q:Is there a good zoo in Philadelphia?
A: Excellent zoo.

Q: May I drink something other than tequila?
A: Anything you want, sugar! We'll get together and compare tequila war stories--I can't even smell the stuff.

Q:And finally, does anyone there know of a Cinquo de Mayo related activity? It would be a blast to celebrate with Mexican food and music.
A: I hereby refer all Cinco de Mayo questions to Sunny.

Pinatas, anyone?

Comment: I was so hoping you'd say that!

A: Excellent zoo.
Q: Are you forgetting that the Vet got torn down a few years ago?

All seriousness aside, I'll be there. Whether coming by myself or not TBD.

Outstanding Bano! I SO hope you can make it!

I'll be in the Philly area early in the week and will be staying through Mother's Day. I'll make myself available by cellphone to help people get to hotels from the airport(s) and will be able to move some bodies from place to place throughout the festivities. I've also had an offer from fellow Sploofus Islander and local Trivia Host Baxipad to participate in activities and perhaps host a game of his own devising for our amusement. I think he's also a stand-up comic so it should be a blast!

Baxi, where are you? Speak up, man!

I'm planning on it. When you say May 5, will there be other weekend get togethers? It's crazy to fly in from New Mexico for just a day. Anyone doing stuff together on Sunday too? Or Friday? Just trying to maximize my time away.

I had in mind as much of Friday as possible for anyone who arrives early, all day Saturday (zoo outing?) and into at least Sunday afternoon before some folks will have to head home. As I say, I'm there a week and a half. How long others can stay will vary. We may have one big day preceded and followed by smaller gatherings.

What say you all?

Sounds great. We're off on Fridays, so we can get there Friday afternoon and leave Sunday morning. All my friends in Philadelphia have left so I'll start researching where to stay. If anyone has suggestions for people on a budget, let me know. And I vote for the zoo, if there still is one.

We need to know some rudimentary numbers ASAP. Consider this post from Sploofmeister on 1/15:
"If we can get 20+ Sploofusers to commit, I might make an official registration form on the site with maps, hotel group rates and blocks, reserve a banquet room for some trivia games, etc. Maybe create some kind of package deal that would include prizes for games, get a web cam so that people that can't make it can watch it, etc. Lots of ideas come to mind. There have been quite a few of these conventions on a small scale and unfortunately I have never made it to any of them because something would come up. Planning this far ahead might make it possible."

Let's do this thing, people, it could be something really wonderful!

Let me know about Friday night, sounds worth it. I have to return Sunday, leave for Egypt Monday, need at least a hour sleep.

I have checked a little.

Hilton Philadelphia City Avenue
4200 City Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States 19131
Tel: 1-215-879-4000 Fax: 1-215-879-9020

Calloways - 1902 County Line Rd, Huntingdon Vly, PA
(215) 322-7300 (they are 10 minutes from the PA turnpike and an hour form the airport)

The Bethayres Tavern
2231 Huntingdon Pk
Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006
215-947-9729 45 minutes to the airport...no hotels within 10 minutes

I am striking out on NTN inside the city. We need a native who knows the burbs.

I know the burbs a bit, lived there for 20 years and both my daughters live within a stone's throw of the Willow Grove exit of the Turnpike. There are enormous hotel resources in and around the city within an hour of the airport. I'll be there already with an Izusu Rodeo that will accomodate 4 passengers and luggage. I'm available to meet planes and can shuttle to any hotel throughout Center City fanning out to the north and west (fuel donations welcome but not required). Those who already know the city, please share your plans and ideas?

We need a place to meet for drinks Friday night for anyone getting in that early, a plan for breakfast and an outing (zoo picnic?) on Saturday and a location for a TriviaFest on Saturday evening; maybe a farewell breakfast for those who must leave on Sunday?

What say you all?

Too late for that but if you grease up real good and get out past New Zealand there's a wicked fast current to the east that will have you off Seattle within a few days.

Nobody book a room yet! I'm making arrangements for a group rate, and am going to pitch in all Sploofus ad revenue from now until May 1 into the pot.

We will have our own banquet room the entire evening Saturday. Hotel has pool, bar, restaurant, etc., so plan on bringing the kids for sure.

By pitching in Sploofus banner ad revenue for the month and getting a banquet room and group rate, I am hoping to get the cost for a room with two queen beds way under a hundred bucks a night. We'll see what kind of deal I can swing for a group rate, and again, Sploofus will be pitching in to cover the costs of everyones accommodations.

WE NEED *AT LEAST* 25 SPLOOFUSERS WHO CAN COMMIT TO STAYING AT LEAST SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE HOTEL ! ! !

Allena and I had been talking about carpooling and possibly sharing a room. Which is my way of saying that if he can at all make it, we should be able to work it out. My guess though is that we'll need to wait at least two weeks before we have a good idea what his condition will be.

I've also gotten excellent rates by calling the reservations lines of the airlines, which beat the Orbitz price last time I traveled. cheaptickets may have bargains on select flights but you just have to plow through them and see what you can find. If you can get a cheap flight into Newark or Trenton you can take the train into town.

The sooner flights are booked the better, as they do go up inside the 3-week window and skyrocket inside 2 weeks.

I am planning on coming but it will be one month prior to our house closing so something may come up. I'm less inclined to bring the family without the zoo. (In their minds, that's the real justification for making the trip.) But it certainly makes more sense to skip it.

I'll arrive late afternoon on Friday by car.

If you need to pad the head count, count me as needing one room. If we meet the quota and I come alone, perhaps someone would want to share a room to decrease the bill. Preferably a female. Okay, definitely a female. On the other hand, perhaps not. Apparently I make noises like a groundhog while I sleep. Perhaps someone with poor hearing?

Summary: yes, by car, 4pm Friday, probably one person, one room.

Surreyman, you can get a flight out of Prestwick for 59 pounds if you make stopovers in Brussels, Lisbon, Nairobi, Delhi and Pago Pago. After you cross the dateline, it's a straight shot to Orlando and a short 5 hour layover before the bus leaves for Philly.

On second thought, probably faster to keep swimming.

C'mon, Sploofmaniacs, let's make this HAPPEN! If Sploofus can move the government, we ought to be able to get a party off the ground!

Think my husband liked Lodi in her jammies. Considering my bathroom has been demolished since April...of 2005!! Someone is most assuredly in the dog house.

I am about 80% yes right now...can I bring the kegerator?

Sorry ...

I see Banomet on the both the "committed" and "tentative" list ...

Does that mean Bano is going to pay for two rooms?

Bano, I will PM you ... I am up for adoption ...

Fantabulosity!

Will everyone please now post their plans to the other thread (REVISED PLANS FOR SPLOOPHILLY FEST)? It's making me dizzy trying to keep up with 3 threads about the same thing.

Anyone who's already booked their flights message me your arrival time so I can see how many I can meet at the airport. I can make at least 2 runs on Friday and one Saturday morning with 4 passengers plus luggage each run.

Sploof, any news on hotel possibilities?

POSTED BY SMOKE20:

REVISED SPLOOPHILLY FEST PLANS

Revised tentative schedule for SplooPhillyFest 2007

These are the facts as I understand them at this moment:

Justin is definitely coming and has taken over the hotel search in hopes of securing a good group rate. He estimates that we need 25 confirmed to guarantee a substantial discount so PLEASE declare yourself NOW if you have hopes of coming, and please let me know by personal message or by posting to this thread exactly when you plan to arrive. The hotel package will include a meeting room for at least one group function on Saturday evening; others may be added later. Justin is planning a multimedia presentation that sounds very exciting, more details to be forthcoming when he gets the dedicated page up shortly.

If enough people will arrive on Friday we can plan for dinner and/or cocktails depending on arrival times. If you plan to arrive on Saturday, make it as early as possible. Whenever you plan to arrive, let me know and I may very well be able to meet your plane/train/bus/mule train and take you to the hotel. When we have a better idea of arrivals we can further structure our time.

We had originally planned a zoo outing. It is Justin's suggestion (with which I concur) that we forgo the zoo and spend our limited time "hunkered down" together, wining, dining and playing games--in short, getting to know each other better.

Comments? Ideas? Complaints? Suggestions?

I'll be transferring the sign-up list to this thread shortly.

Okay, talked to GroupW about who all is coming and it looks like you can put us on the coming list. Neither of us want to miss it and decided to bite the bullet and go for it. Hopefully we won't be calling from beside the road saying....we're broke down help!! LMAO We just need to know how much a hotel room is going to run us. Not sure if we will be coming Friday night or Saturday yet....I forgot to ask him on his way out the door to work. I'll let ya know which day it is as soon as I talk to him tomorrow.

I have officially reserved a beautiful banquet room with wireless broadband access for the entire day and evening, 5th May, 2007, at Sheraton University City - Philadelphia's Cultural Crossings.

Here is a map, which shows the hotel as well as quite a few restaurants within a few blocks away. There are also some great shops and bars in the immediate area.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=restaurants&near=Chestnut+St,+Philadelphia,+Philadelphia,+Pennsylvania,+United+States&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=17&om=1&iwloc=A

There are also a few restaurants in the hotel itself. I am signing the contract tomorrow, so will post the group rates and group name on the site tomorrow. We need to get at least 20 rooms booked there to take advantage of the group rate. We can do it!

It looks like once you get closer to downtown things begin to get much more expensive. The Sheraton I mentioned above is going to have a group rate of $169 per night per room. The banquet room is $300.

Check these out:

Hotel Windsor philadelphia
http://www.windsorhotel.com/index_home.html
(877) 784-8379
$219 - $259 per night

Latham Hotel Philadelphia
http://www.lathamhotel.com
Phone: (215) 563-7474
Toll-Free: 877-Latham1
$249 - $259 per night

Hampton Inn Philadelphia Convention Center
http://www.hamptoninn.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=PHLCVHX
(215) 665-9100
$179 - $209 per night

Please note that these are NOT the group rates for these 3 hotels. I'll call them tomorrow to see what the group rates are. But look at their web sites, and you will see that the overall experience in the downtown area may be much more enjoyable than at the University Sheraton - I am kind of excited about the Hampton Inn Philadelphia Convention Center myself. It is $179 per night, so I'll bet I can get a group rate of about $130 per night if I also reserve a conference room there.

So many choices. What do you all think? I am going to make the final decision and book tomorrow.

Thanks,
Justin

Absolutely right about in-town being much pricier. Upwards of twice as much.

Check this out, and it's not even a group rate.

I don't know for sure what seems expensive to other people. I'm poor, can't plunk down $300 for a room. I don't really need one anyway but will book for one night to help make a group rate if necessary and so I don't have to drive after having too goo of a time.

Justin, it was your suggestion that we spend our limited time together; with that in mind, you may want to check out Ft Washington, Plymouth Meeting, Valley Forge and Willow Grove for a much better price. Most of the ones I've looked at have group rates beginning at 5 rooms and a meeting room.

Funny you should mention it Lodi.

I am building the web page right now for SplooPhilly '07 and am also creating another one for SploofCon '07, which will be near Dana Point, CA (just south of Laguna Beach between San Diego and Los Angeles).

SploofCon will be in August. SplooFest will be held in December - in either Pensacola or Orlando, FL.

No stagecoach smoke. But I have to get up at 3:00 a.m. and drive 2 hours to the Spokane airport to catch my flight on Friday. Then on Sunday, my flight gets in at 11:00 p.m., which will put me home at 1:00 a.m., and then back up for work at 5:00 a.m.

Its worth it though.

As one who travels constantly for work. It is a pain in the butt to get in and out of Pensacola. It is also VERY expensive. I have actually had to fly to Altanta to get home to Ft. Lauderdale to leave. Orlando is MUCH easier to deal with and there are ofter cheap fares to and from!

BTW, Maurlin (or mom as I prefer to call her) and I will be attending the SploofPhilly '07. Please put us on the list (one room...even though mom snores :P)

What gator said. Pensacola's a nightmare, even for those who live there. Cheapest, easiest place to fly to in the whole country is Orlando and they're filthy with hotel rooms and restaurants in every price range. Warmer in Decmber too.

Also, I have family there to stay with!

Either way, count me in!

Now, back to Philly...

Can't do Philly - its either a 10 hour drive or a flight I can't take because i don't have my papers.. papers!?.. i don't need no stinking papers!!

Have so much fun and let me know how it goes (wonderfully I'm sure!) and how's about planning something a little further north?? I'd drive up to 5 hrs for a weekend but, not a full day on the road.

Thanks.

Hello all!
This is Philadelphia BEST trivia host, Sexy Baxter. Unfortunately I'll be DJing a dance the night of the fifth. However, I'd like to offer my services to anyone who like a guided tour of the Philly area from a native. I live in NE philly, near the oldest birdge in America and the only intersection in the world to have four separate cemateries on each corner. I live 5 minutes away from the most dangerous intersection in America, and Holmsburg Prison where "Up Close & Personal" starring Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer was filmed. I'l ltake you to the REAL place to get a Philly Cheese steak (no not Geno's, and NO not Pat's. Better!)
