Can someone explain the part of the point system that applies to the Word Puzzles? I just came in at #18 on the Valentine Day puzzle with 32 moves in 388 seconds. I got 4800 points. Many people farther down on the list got 5000 points for using more moves and longer times. #82 on the list got the same points as I did, and that person used 68 moves in 466 seconds. How are the points calculated?

WordPuzzles give two types of points. The first type starts at 5000 and drops by 100 for each letter you guess that was not in the puzzle. This is independent of the number of moves or the length of time you take.

Your place in the standings, on the other hand, is determined by number of moves, with length of time taken as a tiebreaker. After the puzzle has ended, bonus points will be awarded to everyone based on where they finished. Positions 1-5 get 1000 extra points, positions 6-10 get 500. After that it descends gradually through the 200s. The 11th place finisher gets 290, the 12th 283, and so forth.

As is explained on the opening page of the WordPuzzles, everyone starts with 5,000 points, and you lose 100 points for every letter you choose that's not in the puzzle on which you're working.

Your final placement is based on the number of plays you need to complete all five puzzles, with the time you needed to finish being the tie-breaker.

The top five finishers receive 1,000-point bonuses, the next five receive 500 points, and everyone after that has a bonus based on his/her exact placement, with -- I *think* this is correct, but don't quote me -- 11th place receiving 250 points; 12th, 249; 13th, 248; and so on.

Yeah, what (faster-typer) Kaufman said. And note the correct bonuses for 11th place and below.

Duh....Nothing like feeling really dumb on my very first post. Thank you very much for the explanation. I did read everything before my first WP, but somewhere between then and this morning, I forgot. Thanks again.
