Fast eyes!

I wanted to see if these Google links would provide decent context within the lists of quizzes. The new Sploofus servers were mighty expensive - and the monthly bandwidth costs are increasing - so I am still looking for a way to catch up on a financial model that allows me to keep things running with almost 30,000 regular users.

Less than 1,000 of those are paying members (at a reasonable $15 for 6 entire months), so there has to be some kind of ad model that is non-obtrusive and offers a few bucks. In the interest of the players, Sploofus does not, has not, and never will spam or share user information to make a profit. Signing up to Sploofus will never result in even ONE spam email, even for players that do not upgrade their account. You can make a lot of money that way, but I feel that spam is the most disgusting, vile, destructive way to make a living. I will NEVER do it.

The Google text ads are nice because you will see that they are contextual. A list of food quizzes will show a few text ads relating to food. Movie quiz lists contain a few text ads that are related to films, TV, etc.

Paying members should never have to see flashing banners all over the place like the free players see. Those are terrible. But if it makes the difference between having a Sploofus and not having a Sploofus, are the contextual text ads all that bad?

Ultimately it is your call, because as you know: I have never made any decision permanent that was not agreeable to the vast majority.

Thank you,

No quizzes are being "covered up".

I am hopeful and interested to hear from the rest of you.

I checked them out - very inconspicuous - doesn't bother me in the least - I'm happy that you have found a way that is affordable for you and all of us to keep the cost down to a very reasonable price of $15 US ($17CDN) for 6 mos of sleepless, frenzied sploofus mania - and without massive banners everywhere Good on ya!

I found it distracting-- and I thought it was a "glitch"-- but it didn't affect my overall experience. Now that I understand the reasoning, I'll adjust.

It seems okay to me. Doesn't really affect anything that much.

Not a problem. Looks fine to me also.

I like the fact you get more revenue from ads, but I do have questions.

Does the advertiser require you to post the ads to the entire membership? If the paying membership is 3-4% of the total, will you lose revenue if you choose not to display these ads on pages accessed by these members?

How are other trivia sites able to honor their "no-ads" policy for paying members? For example, another site supports the claim:

“As a gold member, you will not see banner ads, contexual ads, or pop-up advertisements anywhere on the website.”

How does Terry do that? Are the advertisers deducting revenue to him because he does?

Sploofus is becoming "unfun" fast. First, all the problems with the site and now, the ads?? Kindly, let me know how much $$ I have to spend in order to avoid the ads. I thought that's why I paid the 14.95 but, I guess I was wrong.

Dear Sploofus

I have to say I was worried that you would not be able to support this much service to your membership (the vast majority of whom pay nothing) with so little income coming in.
Anything you can do in the way of inconspicuous advertising will -- or should --get no complaints from the mebership.
They do not know how lucky they are...

(and if you can turn a profit it is the very least you deserve)

Do the ads pay for equipment only, how are you compensated for your time? Should you offer this fantastic sight at a loss to yourself? Some ads would certainly allow this Island to grow.

Hey folks, does Justin deserve to make a little money with Sploofus, or should he give away his time for free?

I think the point is this: Sell as much space as you can for ads, and fill the pages for the 97% free members. Go for the income!

However, what is the real loss in advertising income for offering and supporting an ad-free environment for the paying members? After I first signed up, it was a relief to be free of the ads when I went Gold, and that was the primary reason I did it. It was worth the money. When I upgraded to Platinum and renewed my Platinum again, I did it to support this site.

And Barry, I know how lucky I am, thank you very much for telling me I must be ignorant in that regard.

If all you're referring to, are the "contextual ads" which are intermingled between the quizzes, I don't see how they could be that much of a problem to anyone. They certainly don't bother me.

The ads are so inconspicuous that it took me a long time to even find them. I don't see them as a problem. Anything that you can do to support the site that doesn't intefere with the play is OK by me.

Based on your post, I think you intended the additional banner ads in quiz lists to be text ads, but I have been hit with several ones with graphics (468 x 49 pixels instead of 468 x 60, and no problem for DSL, especially once in the cache) and animated ones (Flash Player). The animated ones are for the Dove "inside-out" promotion, and the animation varies.

I know you cannot control Google, but I do not believe you intended for the ads to be animated when you added the stubs.

If this is sink or swim, I concede you grab the life buoy first, of course. Just let members be aware that you still get ads when you pay.

Don't just go for the gold. Reach higher!
