WP GRUMBLES

I think we need to be careful of the grammar on WP. I find them hard enough -- when the grammar does not hold up it makes it even tougher.

Tonight 23rd March has a superfluous word in one of the clues I believe.
A spare 'other'....

I agree. I lost 9 moves on that puzzle because it didn't make sense.

Although I have not done a word puzzle in a while due to the frustration factor I still wonder why the members are held to a higher standard than the editors. If a quiz is submitted with these same mistakes it is returned to the author. When I complained previously about the proofreading one of the editors said they cannot edit a WP. If this is true, how to they correct a mistake after it goes "live"? When I post a message I double check for spelling errors etc. and correct them to the best of my "ability" before I submit. I don't believe the WP writers are doing this and if they are using improper grammar variations intentionally to throw us off they should stop doing so.
Just my opinion of course! If I offended anyone then,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Have a nice day!

When the editors edit our quizzes, they're doing it to HELP us and to improve the overall quality of the site, not to insult us or hold us to any "higher standard." Even so, mistakes do get through. Plenty of them. I bet I could go through my own quizzes right now and find a dozen things that would draw protests if set as a WP. If editors held quizzes to the same standard the WPs achieve consistently, these boards would be filled to crashing with petty complaints.

just out of curiosity, if all editors were to give up the right to do WP for just one other sploofus editor (eg sploofasaurus edits spofantastic's puzzles) they could all submit edited puzzles and we'd have a better product.
Given my appalling typing I know its hard to believe how much other people's typos grate on me.... but they do. And grammar errors are a problem in this particular format.
Neither matter in quizzes where you have the visible evidence around you to wrk t wht th thr mnt.

Just an FYI to clear up some misconceptions:

"...why the members are held to a higher standard than the editors."
The quizzes written by editors are given the exact same attention as those of any other member. I recently edited a quiz by another editor that I sent back three times for a confusing question. There is no double standard there.

"...one of the editors said they cannot edit a WP. If this is true, how to they correct a mistake after it goes "live"?"
Regarding the editing process: Justin has created an elaborate system for editing quizzes wherein editors can make changes and there is a process by which the quizzes must be released by the editor before they can go "live". This system is simply not in place for the Word Puzzles. When we write one it is automatically assigned the next open date for play. As a courtesy to you all we have been reviewing each others WP's before their play date, but I have no way to change anything in any WP that I did not write myself. If I see an error in another person's WP all I can do is send them a message that they need to fix it. If they don't get that message in time, the puzzle goes live anyway.

It is on Justin's to-do list to create a better system for editing WP's before they go live, but it is not the highest priority for him. The system, as is, is not perfect but usually works adequately. Yes, the occasional error gets through, and we always apologize and try to get it fixed asap.

"I double check for spelling errors etc. and correct them to the best of my "ability" before I submit. I don't believe the WP writers are doing this..."
None of the editors want to subject themselves, or the Sploofus website, to the negative comments generated by a WP error. The entire purpose of us volunteering our time here is to help make Sploofus the best trivia site on the web! We all review our own work, but we are human, we do make mistakes.

"...and if they are using improper grammar variations intentionally to throw us off they should stop doing so."
I don't even know how to respond to this comment. All I can say is none of the editors would ever use improper grammar on purpose to throw off a puzzle. There is simply no purpose for such vindictive behavior. Justin would not tolerate such behavior.

Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I hope that this information has cleared up some of the misconceptions about the editing of WP's.

My opinion is that I would rather not hear negative opinions. Wait! Is this negative? Now what do I do?

If there were no mistakes here whatever would I have to complain about?

Sloofizz, THAT is the kind of response I appreciate. You too, Asian. Thank you both and I pray that good things in your way come!
