!! SOS ... ALLENA ... SOS !!

I thought Sploofus had gone quiet recently - and I've just learned it must be 'cos Allena is laid up in hospital!

He's broken 8 bones in his leg and ankles falling off a ladder!

Mainly he's frustrated, 'cos the hospital computers, for whatever reason, bar the Sploofus site! He can't bear the thought of another 10 non-Sploofus days there!

He asks if Justin - or anyone - or everyone - can phone the hospital's IT department, explain how innocent(?) the Sploofus site is, and please get access opened up!

The number is 240-864-6000.

Then you can all write your wishes (of whatever type!) below for his further entertainment!

PS: "SOS" has to stand, of course, for "Save Our Sploofus"!

although I've chatted with Allena I'm not sure i have his email address.
If he wants it poseted here we can all send him brainteasers.... so even if he cant get into sploofus we can occupy him.

(or we can send him bridge hands)

Will you ask him if I can get his E -mail, so I can write him?
Anything for a fellow sploofer in distress.....

I wondered why I hadn't seen him. I message with him occasionally and find him to be a very nice person. I am sorry to hear of his misfortune.

Sat, 31st Mar '07 1:21 PM

Good Gawd Man!

I'm happy to hear it was his leg and not his neck, as I really like the chap! So I will see what I can do with that hospital... please send him my best wishes.

Very suprising a hospital would block sploofus seen as it is a 'family freindly site'

Oh and I hope Allena makes a speedy recovery, we need him back.

I wish you luck with your attempt to get "Sploofus Island" for Allena while he's recovering in the hospital. I know this would speed up his recovery, and pass the time for him enormously.

You must be a very caring, considerate and thoughtful person to take this time for one of your members out of 27,000 others. You are truly to be commended for all you attribute to the site and going the extra mile.

Oh man! 8 bones. Jim, get better fast, and get back here!! I miss picking on ya.

I do have Jim's email somewhere, but I don't know if it is OK to post it.

Justin, can I? Is it legit??

One possible reason the hospital blocks Sploofus:

"I'll get that Code Blue after one more word round."

Tell Allena I wish him a speedy recovery!

It's a crying shame. Two more bones and he'd have had a quiz.

Seriously, I just got off the phone with Jim, and he's in good spirits. I'll probably visit him tomorrow. The accident happened eight days ago out at the farm while he was lowering hay for the horses; the ladder slipped and he got tangled in it on the way down. He landed in about the worst way possible; he's taken damage in both legs and his right arm, but he is on the mend. He expects to be able to go home April 9. It will probably be around six months before he is fully mended, but he's improving. He's already getting around on a walker and via wheelchair.

He is suffering from Sploof-Withdrawal, and misses you all. He doesn't have access to his e-address-book, so even if he had your address, he needs you to send him another email. For those who want to send him get well messages, PM me, and I'll pass you his email address. Or post here in the next 20 hours or so, and I'll print out this whole thread.

I am beyond shocked and saddened to hear of Allena's unfortunate accident. He sent me the itinerary of his trip and I was so happy to hear he was going on such a wonderful journey. Let's all send him messages of good cheer and best wishes for a quick recovery. He has been a great source of encouragement to me and I will always be grateful to him.

Poor Allena! I hope he recovers soon and completely. He's a great guy.

I'd go nuts without access. I commonly have that problem in my travels, but at least I'm doing something fun and am not lying in bed.

Get all better soon, Jim!!!

I feel so bad for you! The only bright spot I see is that, at least for a while, you're guaranteed a stationary table in any team game. Mend rapidly, feel better and hurry back here.

I hope you recover quickly from your injuries, and that your hospital stay just flies by, and hope Justin is successful in getting you hooked back up to "Sploofus Island". We'll be thinking about you, and wish you the best.

Jim honey, I feel your pain. I've broken bones before myself and it is no fun! Being a nurse makes it doubly hard because you think you should heal quicker than other folks! LOL! Doctors are the same way.
I do hope that you are doing better and I know it's frustrating but I'll send up some prayers that your recovery hurries along as fast as the Good Lord allows. And if there is anything you need just give me a holler and I'll see what I can do. You take care and please don't be climbing anymore ladders!
We love and miss you!

Good God...

Ken tell Jim we are all rooting for a speedy recovery. It will be a long road, but the good thing about the internet addiction is that it doesn't require the use of your legs.

Tell him I said to listen to the doctors and be a good patient.

Incidentally, I saw that one of his quizzes finally snuck through the editing queue. I think he'd appreciate if you could find a little time today to take his quiz.

I did email Allena to check if it was OK to publish his hospital email address and was awaiting his OK, which we obviously ought to have first.

But I'll now leave all arrangements with Kaufman who is obviously far better placed.

Great of you, Justin, to contact the hospital. Any news from there?

Yeh - Allena must be really xxxxxxxx off about his trip. I've been working with him during the past months on the itinerary, since it's an area I know well. It was roughly during May, from Cairo, up the Nile to Abu Simbel, over to the Sinai, then into Jordan. Fantastic stuff that he's never yet seen. Even worse, he was going to end up in the UK en route home and we were hoping to meet up (so he could blame me for all the hassles my itinerary had caused!).

Weeks and weeks of very detailed work - and a month's great travelling - up the spout. He must be sick, sick!

Hoping Kaufman and Justin can get him linked up.

I hope, Allena that you're doing better. I know it will take a while to heal. All my best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery. And stay off ladders (LOL)!

I am likely going to go with Kaufmann to visit Allena at the hospital today. Or as the Canadians say at hospital - I have never figured out why the Canadians drop "the" from that phrase.

I have more mixed feelings about Allena than anyone I have ever met.
Typical is his impact on my trivia playing:
- Allena introduced me to Sploofus.
- Allena got me (and everyone else on his team) banned from the live trivia game at the local pub.

Allena ... I hope you get well soon!

the pub ban?

Hooliganism I assume? If not please tell us all why you were banned.

Sun, 1st Apr '07 11:40 AM

I have contacted the hospital and got a referral to their IT dept., which I have to wait until tomorrow to contact. And I will!

Got a note from Jim that he will be in the hospital till the 10th. Ya gotta get Sploofus working for him - can you imagine being without for so long????

Unfortunately, the hospital seems to get its net feed from, which of course has big government firewalls and site-blockers and the like.

Jim looks good (considering). When we came in, we caught him at a terminal accessing email. He's at an excellent rehab facility -- its patient-to-therapist ratio is less than 5 to 1. All sorts of state-of-the-art things to help him get better, so hopefully, it won't be long till he's starting to get up and around.

I brought him screendumps of the five WPs I got last night, so he won't suffer total withdrawal.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Jim. The Islanders are furiously building the rescue raft and stocking it with the needed provisions. They're a little hung up on the sails right now but we're hoping for smooth sailing for you soon.

i can access. a minor miracle if justin broke the NIH barriers. i do not think sploofus was banned as much as it was not listed as accepted. it would be darn hard to get a trvia site approved by anything governmental... thanks justin for your fine work.

i really appreciate the great thread. i will print it and save it in my scrapbook. thank you very much. surreyman and i poke each other so i had his email. he is a good friend...i do appreciate his efforts. ken and his wife and my wife are buddies, as is steve. it was great to see them here. ken is practically a trivia team by himself but with steve, several quizbowl ringers aand a few other die hard trivia folk i found, we won the Maryland State Trivia Bowl 7 times. no other team ever repeated. finally, we retired after our bar fired the trivia mc.

i will try to write more quizzes when i get home next week. right now, it is enough to be able to do wordpuzzles and others quizzes. this is a dial up line and i am now learning to type left handed (broke the right hand).

i really appreciate the response.

I sure am glad Justin got you connected up to "Sploofus Island". I'm sure time in a hospital bed really drags by with nothing to do, and I know this will make the time fly by, and your recovery time a lot shorter, if not physically, mentally, and keep your spirits up. Hope you're out of there in no time, and have a great day. Best wishes from Tennessee!

Lautah, I am Canadian and I use the "THE" in the sentence with hospital. I never heard of anyone dropping it. Just to let you know. Maybe the person was French speaking and did not speak English properly?

Lisap369  (Level: 61.1 - Posts: 992)

I am Canadian as well and I also use 'the' when referring to hospital.

I'm fairly certain it's the English who drop 'the' before hospital.

We probably should as well - we do everything else they do (but better ;0 j/k )

The Brits say "in hospital."
