"WORTH YOUR SALT?" BY SURREYMAN

Excellent quiz. Should have earned and EA. http://www.sploofus.com/triviaquiz/worth_your_salt.html

I whole-heartedly agree that the quiz should have received an EA.

Well, without giving away the reason, I think there's a rational reason why it didn't! You should take the quiz and see. (It's a good thing.)

... And then seek out the eight or so companion quizzes by other authors.

....Some of those "companion quizzes" are diabolical! They were all released about the same time/date.

Go seek 'em out:
Tuzilla, Kaufman, Domester, Garrybl, Allena, Billkozy, Geniuswaitress, Surreyman and I (Bushyfox)wrote to a theme.

I am feeling quite frustrated by this thread. I was just trying to compliment Surreyman for a quiz I had enjoyed and thought others might enjoy as well. (Isn't that what this forum is for?) I had just read an article about the Salt Hedge shortly before taking the quiz. I was so surprised to find a quiz on the subject--I had thought it was obscure enough that there wouldn't be one, and I could write one--just to find that, not only did one already exist, it was quite well-written. Should have known, huh? No subject is too obscure for this site.
So then, my post gets the "I think there's a rational reason why it didn't [get an EA]! You should take the quiz and see" response. Well, I can't get back into the quiz to "see" anything, so I have no way of figuring out what the "rational reason" would be. Frustration level #1.
Then, I get another cryptic response: "And then seek out the eight or so companion quizzes by other authors." But how do I figure out what the "companion quizzes" might be. I searched by "salt" but found nothing that seemed to be a "companion" to the first one. Frustration #2.
There is the clue that the "companions" launched at the same time, but how do I know when ANY quizzes launch unless they are still on the Most Recent list? Frustration #3.
THEN the list of authors--but even if I seek out each one (which takes FOREVER because none of you are online at the moment, and the player directory is indexed by initial letter, but then I have to page through the whole alphabet of second letters to get to some of your names--and I have a very slow internet connection). Grrrr....frustration level is rising to ready-to-weep level.
So all the tantalizing hints have piqued my interest, but I give up. I do not have any idea how I am supposed to figure out what you all are talking about. I take back my initial post. I will take your word for the fact that this quiz did NOT deserve the EA. Maybe it's a lousy quiz--maybe no one should take it. What do I know about my own enjoyment of a quiz.........?

Boo-hoo.... ;'(
I really am not that whiney--just frustrated. I have spent over an hour trying to figure out what the companion quizzes are and I'm feeling quite stupid--and none of like to feel too stupid, do we?
Sigh......

Zeedee........make it easy on yourself.....just go back thru the recent quizzes on the list, looking for the names of the above-mentioned authors as you go. They were all released about the same time, and should still be on the main "Trivia Quizzes" page.
Good Luck!

I HAVE looked. I have looked and looked. Too bad you can't let me in on the secret theme. Why do you have to be so cryptic? Is it a private joke?
But now, I really do give up. I will not respond again to this thread.

The secret theme is they were all released on and for the First Day of April.

Now i'm frustrated... I saw the quiz about Mt. Rushmore/Uluru and the quiz about the 27th Letter of the alphabet, and it was obvious that they were April Fools pranks. However, I don't see the prank in Surreyman's "salt hedge" quiz.

I think he was banking on people finding it so preposterous that they would assume it was an April Fooler, only to be fooled when they discover it was real.

The quiz I had launched on 4/1 is absolutely true, genuine and honest. It is a mere coincidence it was launched on 4/1...

So Zeedee and I are quite right in stating that the quiz deserved an EA.

Sorry - I've only just seen that WWIII is about to start through my mild little quiz!

Tuz is quite right as to my intentions! Double bluff it was - or triple or whatever!

The 9 April Fools quizzes were sort of akin to a secret CQ in that they were arranged ahead of time and sprinkled into the mix on 4/1. We treated them like the CQ quizzes in that none would get EAs. Play the complete set, if you wish.

Surreyman -- Worth Your Salt?
Domester -- You Invented a What!? Failed Patent Submissions
Kaufman -- Vernal Falls
Billkozy -- Incredible Little Known Musical Facts
Geniuswaitress -- The 27th Letter of the Alphabet?
Bushyfox -- The Grand Carving Of Uluru
Tuzilla -- "Going My Way?" said the Dodo
Garrybl -- Vocabulary Test; take one/four the team
Allena -- "Barbie"

I think the weirdest part of this thread is that you read an article about the salt hedge somewhere!

The salt hedge is nothing compared to the Jamaican Pepper Fence or the Canadian Ketchup Moat.

OK OK... now I understand why the quiz couldn't get an EA even though it was a very well-written quiz and ordinarily it probably would have.

I misinterpereted some comments as unnesesarily sarcastic, and that got my back up. Perhaps it's a cultural thing, but I have always thought of April Fools pranks as overtly outrageous stories that are touted as real in order to fool people for the day (Like the Rushmore/Uluru quiz and the 27th Letter quiz).

When I did Surreyman's Salt Hedge quiz, I never would have thought it was an April Fools prank because the hedge actually DID exist. For me, not knowing that you had all connived together, the quiz was about the quirky and eccentric mind of the British bureaucrat.

When I read through the responses to Zeedee's OP, I thought that you'd all mistakenly thought that Surreyman's quiz was a fictitious story, and that you thought that Zeedee and I were too dumb to see that it was an April Fools joke (which of course, it isn't if you don't see it in the context of your April Fools Day plot)

Now that I understand what happened, I can see that there was no sarcasm intended.

WWIII averted...

Cheers,
Marc

My question would be.. were these quiz makers chosen randomly?

Not exactly. Tuzilla and Surreyman, those geniuses behind the Community Quizzes, came up with it and started putting together their quizzes. Around mid-March, they approached me, asking if I wanted to join in the fun. We decided that it might be interesting to invite others in, sort of like a CQ, but on a smaller and informal scale, and threw together a list of about ten names of known quiz writers who we felt could do justice to the theme, and most of whom ultimately did contribute. Steve and Alan managed to get the details of the plan piped up to the editors on a need-to-know basis, so that the quizzes could be released on schedule, and we worked from there.
