The World Quizzing Championships are coming June 2nd 2007. There will be a USA venue as part of the Game Show Boot Camp being put on at the New York Athletic Club, 180 Central Park South, New York NY 10019 - see for details.

The World Quiz takes submissions of around 1000+ from questions from countries all over the world and narrows them down to a set of 240 questions, with 30 each in the categories of Culture, Entertainment, History, Lifestyle, Media, Science, Sports, and World - simlar to the recently completed TransAtlantic Quiz. The questions are balanced for a range of difficulties and subtopic areas, and then are double checked for accuracy before being translated back into various languages so that they it can be taken in various native tongues.

Sploofus member Donna Jackson was the champion for the TransAtlantic Quiz (which had content from the USA, Canada, and UK, with those countries along with Norway, Belgium, and India taking part) - the PR for that event follows:

Florida Woman is Trivia Queen!

Donna Jackson from Jacksonville Fla, has beaten quiz players from across North America and Great Britain proving that blondes are not daft!

In the inaugural Transatlantic Quiz Challenge, trivia buffs on both sides of the Pond tested their little grey cells to the limit with 240 carefully crafted questions over a two hour period. Seven Brits and three Americans featured in the top 10, including Jeopardy legend Ken Jennings and World Quizzing Champion Kevin Ashman.

On hearing that she had beaten everyone else, Donna said; 'Wait till I tell my kids I beat Ken Jennings! I'd have been stupid from nerves if I'd known I was competing against him!'

It's not hard to see how Donna's become the Trivia Queen. She hosts weekly trivia nights at two local pubs--the London Bridge Pub and the Shanty Town Pub and enjoys travelling, having visited 45 US states, England, Scotland, Iceland, Canada and Mexico.

She loves birding, NASCAR racing, photography, sudoku, crosswords, movies, game shows and writing trivia questions. A self-confessed newspaper junkie, Donna also enjoys the theater and is an avid reader, favoring history and historical fiction, adventure and travel.

'There were a couple of questions that I was really proud to answer correctly,' explained Donna. 'My favorite was one about a bloodsucking Galapagos bird. I meant to be making a funny answer and it was right! I knew Darwin had written extensively about the finches, so I guessed 'vampire finch' thinking of my youngest daughter, who adores vampire literature and film. I owe another answer to the same daughter who recently sent me a postcard from Hell, Grand Cayman.'

'I was quite proud of knowing that Mary Queen of Scots played golf at Musselburgh, thinking most people would say St. Andrews, and I was lucky to have recently stumbled over something about Jeremy Bentham's body, so that got me another answer.'

Jane Allen of the International Quizzing Association, the organisers of the event, said; 'This was a very tough test of knowledge, with people taking part in 12 venues, so Donna should be really proud of her awesome achievement. It'll be interesting now to see how the USA and Canada perform in their first showing at the World Quizzing Championships on 2 June. The tournament will be an open event taking place in 15 countries with full details will shortly be available at

2. Who plays Bree Hodge (née Mason, formerly Van De Kamp) in US TV's Desperate Housewives?

3. Saffron, perhaps the world's most expensive cooking spice, comes from which plant?

4. Which race car driver--who lost both legs in a horrific crash on 15 September 2001, in Klettwitz, Germany--returned to racing as first double amputee to test drive a Formula One car in 2006?

5. You know about the Oedipus complex, but girls have a complex all their own, named for whom?

6. He created the periodic table, leaving gaps for elements not yet found. One of them, #101, is named for him. Who was he?

Paul it's a huge disappointment to me that for several utterly insurmountable reasons, I can't make June 2nd--my cosmically bad timing gets me again! It sounds like a wonderful time and possibly the chance to realize some long-cherished dreams, but woe and alas, it is not to be.

For the Sploofers who are interested in what the questions were like, now you see.

1. O J SIMPSON factoid encountered on imdb and other places
2. Marcia CROSS never seen the show--stone cold stab in the dark
3. CROCUS one of my own former trivia questions
4. Alex ZANARDI racing--duh
5. ELEKTRA love Greek myth and theater but may have picked it up from bio of Freud
6. Dmitry MENDELEYEV missed this one--guessed Lavoisier--go ahead--laugh
7. 1972 (Eugene Cernan) knew it
8. Anna Nicole SMITH ditto
9. AZARIA sort of knew it, guessed and hoped
10. Sir Christopher WREN knew it from many sources

It was all like that--I knew some, I worked some out, I guessed some, I missed some. I even missed one that was a slam dunk--thinking "Thor" I still somehow wrote down "Odin." Got ribbed about it by my scorer, too! I may have had a little boost against Americans because of my lifelong obsession with the Brits, so I had a foot in each camp, so to speak. The shocker to me (and no doubt to them) was beating the Brits--I know their pub games are tougher than ours, and they know our culture far better then we know theirs. It's been a tremndous adventure and may lead somewhere yet, but if nothing else ever comes of it I've had an incredible few days I will always cherish.

Thanks, Paul, for giving me the opportunity to take part, and thanks to all of Sploofus for the great training in guessing skills!

This is how utterly: my son is getting married that day after the wedding being postponed twice, once for the death of the bride's father and then for their son to have surgery. There's no way I can put them through another postponement and no way I'm going to miss it.

Always next year for games, but not for this. Believe me, I'm enormously disappointed, but them's the breaks.

Best of luck to everyone, I'll be looking for a report!

I so wish I could come, Paul, but I'd still rather be at my son's wedding. I'll do my level best to make it next year; that's a promise I've made to myself.

Thanks for a fun, wonderful, amazing experience! Nothing in life is more satisfying than making your family proud. I deeply appreciate having the chance to do that; they don't come along like that very often.

Please keep us posted on the doings?

For those interested in testing their wits against some of the best - there will be at least 2 and perhaps as many as 6 of the players who will be taping the new show "Grand Slam" attending the Game Show Boot Camp as a way to practice.

Grand Slam will be taping June 6-8 in New York, with 16 of the top US Game Show winners of various shows facing off for $100,000 winner takes all.

Grand Slam is slated to be shown on GSN later this summer (probably July sweeps). They have sent camera crews to get background shots at all the locations where the contestants are from, and they will likely send one to the Game Show Boot Camp to get additional background shots of the contestants preparing for that show.

The ABC network of which I am part (American Backwoods Comcast) doesn't provide GSN. Any chance of a webcast? Or even better, archived video?
