I remember this from an old magazine many years ago...Mensa publication. You are placed in a room with two exits, one leads to freedom, the other to certain death and you are not told which door is which. A doorkeeper guards each ALWAYS tells the truth, the other ALWAYS lies...and you are not told which is which. You are allowed to question either or both to try and determine what door you should take. What one question posed to either doorkeeper would positively identify the correct door?

Ask them if 1+1=2....there is your answer.

I think I remember the nature of the predicament dictating that you are allowed to ask only one question.

That would just prove which one was the liar, but not whether he was guarding the door of death or freedom. Right?

"If I ask the other guard whether he's guarding the door that leads to freedom, will he say yes?"

If the guard you're speaking to answers yes, that's the door to go through. If he says no, go through the other door.

There are other possible questions, but they still involve asking one guard what the other guard would say.

This riddle has cause no end of problems within my family. Its in the film The labrynith (with David Bowie and jennifer Connolly. Which is our all time favorite films, I would recommend you watch it as to me it makes it easier to answer the riddle, (apart from my mother who agonises over it everytime!!!!!)
Plus the flim is a classic in my opinion, and everyone should see it at least once!

I have a game called Mindtrap from which I sometimes use logic puzzles for pub trivia; it has several variations on the "who do you ask" theme.

For more of this type puzzle track down anything by Raymond Smullyan. Two I remember are:

The Lady or the Tiger?
What is the Name of this Book?

You'll become a pro at this type of logic game if you read either one of them.

The Answer..... Using my Jedi Mind trick, I get one of the guards to go through the door himself. If he dies, I go through the other one.
