CURUIOUS ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE...

The little star badges I see in people's profiles that say they have earned a "proficiency" in a particular category..... How does that whole thing work???

You have to have answered a certain percentage of your QOTDs right in that category to get a badge. The longer you play, the lower that percentage drops. For example, when you first sign up and start answering questions, you need to get all the vocabulary questions right to see a vocab badge on your profile. But if you are a member for a long time, you only need to answer 50% of them right to see that badge (since there will have been many more questions thrown at you). The badges come and go, depending on your success in particular topics. If you mouse over the badge, you will see the percentage of the questions that you have answered correctly in that category.

......I find it rather curious to note that one of my badges says I get 50% of "Sports Soup" TQOTDs correct, when I get NONE! I have an exemption from that category......!

Did you maybe get one right and one wrong before you exempted?

If I exempt myself from a category does this mean that on a particular day when that category would normally be displayed I don't get to answer a question? Or does it just skip and go to the next question in line?

Also, when we play WR and WM, does everybody get the same set when they start, or is it a random pull each time?

Sorry to sound like such an ignoramus, but I've always wondered and never asked.....

Thanks!

Sheri Ras.

re WR and WM we all get different lists.
Also I discovered that when a question in a quiz comes to us, the answers are in random sequence. when I rewound and got a question again, by accident, the answer order had changed.

Hi Sherylann,
I've exempted myself from the television category but I get a Trivia Question of the Day every day.

Good thing, because I often get a string of questions from one particular category. It would be a drag if they came from the category that I exempted and then I didn't get a question! Whew!

I also have the same situation.. I exempted myself from Sports soup not long after joining - and probably got the 1 question I had, before exemption, right so, mine shows 100% BUT.. my best category is Movies & Television - of which I get fairly few wrong - and don't see a badge for that one. I'm sure there's a method and calculation to rewarding badges - I'm just not sure it's actually functioning properly.

TQOTD is a database that randomly assigns a question each day to each player. If everyone got the same question there would be too many ways of sharing the answer! The only time the same question is given on purpose is for a showdown.

The WR and WM lists are also random. I am not positive about this, but I believe that each question is random, not just each list of 10. So once in a while you see a familiar definition in a set, while all others in that set are different.

When I first started playing WRs I thought I would get the same set of questions on my second, third and fourth tries...how else could people be getting such quick times unless they were doing the same puzzle over and over???? Also, it didn't seem like a fair competition if we weren't all playing the same puzzle each hour.

But I soon found that I was wrong. Sometimes figuring out the game is the most rewarding part of the game!

Thanks, everybody, for the input- it helps me understand a little better.

Thanks also to the support staff, for restoring my points from a showdown challenge that went bad.

thanks for asking about the badges and the exemptions. I'm at level 9 and I keep thinking I should have picked up on all this by now, so I'm glad to see that others are still questioning, even at higher levels. That's why I find the chats so interesting; it seems I learn something new every time I log on.
