A SHOWDOWN CONUNDRUM

When I get up the nerve to stage a showdown I check the leaderboard to see who is ahead of me...I look at their profile and see if they might have a completely different base of knowledge (way different age, or medical job, whatever). I just want to feel like I know my opponent. Then I look at their "average answering speed". If it is WAY less than my average speed...I do not challenge them.

But if it is about equal or worse, then I proceed to the Showdown Challenge screen. Imagine my amazement when the person listed as my opponent is NOT the person who is directly above me on the leaderboard! This has happened several times (not every time, but enough to seem odd).

I'm confused how this can happen, since the leaderboards and points seem to be updated instantaneously.

Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? Anyone else want to offer strategies for Showdowns?

I noticed this before they did away with having a choice on categories - for example, I only opted for Bible categories so when I would issue a challenge it would be the person right above me that had that category listed as well. I would think now that it would absolutely be the person immediately in front of you. But who knows what is going on at this point. We may be living in that futuristic science fiction era where the computer program has taken on a mind of its own and is really the one running sploofus.

Was this happening before or after the QOTD change suzer? If it was happening before, the person right above you might not have been subscribed to the categories you had. You could only challenge the next person up with the same cateogry selection so sometimes you might skip someone. if it happened after, then I'm not sure what happened.

...unless... I know you can't use showdown tokens if you're not a gold member. Could this person you scoped out ahead of time been a non-gold member? Even if they had a percentage listed, if they are an older player, the percentages might be from a while back when they could use the showdown tokens. Just a possibility.

interesting...that never occurred to me about the question editions. It hasn't happened for a few days so I guess it was only in the "olden days" (last week - LOL).

And I guess I understand why only gold members can use showdown tokens to be the challenger...but why can't ANYONE be a challengee??

hmmm

They probably can't be the challengee because they might actually take points from the gold member if they won. There would never be any risk involved and they could make a killing in points since they would never lose any.

Non-gold members can issue showdowns - they can't make wagers on their QOTD. They also can't play wordpuzzles as often and they only get three tries at wordpuzzles instead of ten.

I meant they only get three tries at WordRounds. So sorry.
