I have just discovered the music to Elton John and Tim Rice's 'Aida' which was on Broadway a while back. Has anyone seen it? have any insight?

Will it "play in Peoria" as they say?

I am waiting to get a perusal copy to read, but wonder what anyone here might have to say about it. Also, how it compares to the original opera. I have read the Wikipedia entries for both.

I liked it. It is a different story with different music from the original opera.

I did see Aida last fall "in Peoria"! It was a traveling Broadway production and it was wonderful. Thanks to Sploofus and my new-found trivia knowledge, I won the tickets from a local radio station and they gave me a CD as well. The music was great also. You will love it! Have a great time.

I have just started listening to the music and it sounds like the kind of show that I might be able to produce at the high school where I teach...rock band with some horns, and only a couple of strong singers featured with a large back up chorus.

But will my conservative audience enjoy it??

It's good, but not fabulous. It does not blow people away the way "The Lion King" did when it first came out. But if you go in with modest expectations, you will enjoy it.
I think that being familiar with the music first will add to your enjoyment.

Actually, I love the music from Aida.
