Just want to take a minute to express my sorrow over the loss of 9 brave fireman who gave their lives fighting a fire in South Carolina. My heart goes out to the family and friends of these heroic men.

I hope everyone takes a moment to realize how brave these men are and most of them are volunteers! My Dad was a fireman and my hero.

Firefighter's Prayer

When I'm called to duty god
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be its age

Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate

Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out

I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor and
protect his property

And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.

Very nice. I send my deepest sympathy to the families or these heroes. The death of those who willingly put their lives in harms way to help others is always such a tragedy.

The poem is very touching...the loss of the firefighters so tragic. My heart goes out to all their families who will be grieving the loss.

I spent 13 years as a firefighter, and this hits me hard.

That is a very beautiful prayer Valerie. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the firefighters who paid the ultimate price to save a life. They along with EMT's, Paramedics, and Police Officers are HEROES!

That was very moving. Thank you Valerie.

I think firefighters are some of the most awesome heroes we have. Every particle of our being would be telling us to flee the danger of a fire, and yet these people plow forward in a selfless effort to help others. Amazing, simply amazing.

It is a beautiful tribute. I just read the article and apparently it is the single greatest loss of firefighters since 9-11. The firefighters did manage to rescue several people before loosing their own lives. As their fire chief stated, they died doing what they loved and what they trained for.

It is a tragic loss for a fairly small town ( 106,000). I will keep the firefighters and the families in my thoughts and my prayers.

It is a beautiful tribute
