Hi all; my 8-year old cat Holly decided to run away during the night through a window that was only open an inch. She has never been outside and I am worried sick. Please send up a prayer or two that I find her alive and well. Thanks a lot, Rachael

lots of prayers

if you are not already aware there are some things that you need to do
make fliers, get them to all vets within a 10 mile radius, pet stores, ambulance crews, police and fire ( pd will probably blow you off but the other two are usually pretty good, they are out and about at strange hours and often see lost animals that other people may not see

if you have not found her in 24 hours, get a humane trap from the local animal shelter and set it twice a day with the smelliest whatever that you can, you will end up catching a lot but good chance you will get your cat.. they often get very skittish and almost feral if they are not accustomed to going out, so the humane trap is a good idea
get an ad into the paper, the weekly quik quarter etc
get fliers on every stop sign and to every house within a 5 block radius, check every little hidy hole and such around your house

do not take animal controls word, go every other day until you find the cat or you have confirmation of the worst. i watched them have one of my dogs that was microchipped, had rabies tags and id tags on and i went with a picture and flier and they said the dog was not there, i went back later ( the kennel was not open, only the front) and sure enough the dog was in the shelter.. and working in rescue i have see it far too many times..

good luck

Thank you so much for the kind words, everyone! As of 3 PM EST, no sign of her. I called the animal control officer to report her missing, and have posted signs all over the place. I also put some of my stinky sneakers outside the window she escaped from and am hoping she will recognize the smell! Thanks again, hope to have some good news to report before long. God bless you all, Rach

I hope she's back consoled in the knowledge that nearly all DO come back OK.
It is a horribly worrying time till that happens though.

My prayers for her safe return.

Once I lost my daughter's cat for a week....she was rescued from the local dumpster (about 10 feet away) when she got hungry and yeowled continuously for food.
They don't go too far and are very cautious when they aren't used to being out.
Ask all your neighbours to bang on their hoods before they start up their cars, especially the one's who don't go out often. Cats like the engine warmth and being out of sight.
Hope you find her soon. Sometimes they come home a year later....unless someone feeds her and takes her in.

Just remembered....decades ago I had a cat named Tiger.
He used to go out a lot and eventually would come back happy.
And then one day he came back PREGNANT.......

I know at the moment you must be worrying not stop, but I'm sure she will return, as cats have a habit for disappearing for days. I will pray for her speedy and safe return.

I do hope you find Holly. Sometimes a cat wanders in somewhere and gets shut in by mistake.
As soon as she's able to get out she'll come flying home.

A big thank you to my Sploofus family for all your prayers and support: Miss Holly jumped through the same window she escaped from very early yesterday morning, around 4 AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Praise God!!! She was in terrific condition, no signs of being in a fight; she didn't even look like she had lost any weight, was still about 12 pounds!! I am so grateful for all the kind messages I received; thank you so much!!!!

Wonderful news. These cats will give us a turn now and then --bless 'em. Tell Holly to wipe that smirk off her face, then give her a hug and nail that window shut.

Hurray!! These pets just don't realize how much they stress us out when they take off. I'm so glad this is a pet tale with a happy ending.
