According to the research I have done, a frozen shoulder can occur from an injury, overuse in Sports or various reasons.

I feel mine is caused by overuse of the mouse since I have spent several hours a day on the computer and on Sploofus. The strain and repetitive movement for long periods of time could possibly and probably be the reason. There is also a term known as "Mouse Shoulder". Don't laugh, it's true. It is painful and you have limited movement of the shoulder, and are unable to reach your arm behind you.

Since many of you on the site are using your arm in the same manner, I am wondering if any of you have ever had this, and if so, were you able to cure it with home treatment, as I do not want to go to the doctor.

Any and all detailed information would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, Marilyn, I know exactly what you are talking about and agree that it was caused by the mouse...I used Icy Hot, in the cream form, not the patch, for several days, and the pain did go away (

Before I owned my own medical transcription company, I did a lot of typing. One thing that helps is not to have your hand flat on the keyboard - many ladies with long fingernails do this. As far as the mouse goes, I put a regular size notebook, spine to the back and the mouse on top and use it at an angle. Just that few degrees of elevation helps tremendously and I haven't had the problem since, although sometimes your hand gets tired from mousing. Move the keyboard as far left as you can stand it and have the notebook and mouse closer to the center. I hope that helps.

Overuse syndrome is usually corrected by NOT overusing the area affected. While we all have an addiction to this site, it may be best to "rest" for a week or so. Aspirin and over the counter creams, while they make you feel better, don't correct the problem.

In addition to shoulder problems, I have radial nerve entrapment, which is also classified as "overuse syndrome". I have learned to use my mouse with my less-dominant hand, which has helped me avoid a tricky surgery. You might try that as well - it should ease the burden on your shoulder. Be aware that it takes some time to get used to it, and you may never be able to click as fast as with your dominant hand, but when you think about long-term chronic pain as opposed to not getting better times on word rounds and such, which is more important???

Marilyn, if it's truly a "frozen shoulder" you need to go to the doctor ASAP. You'll probably be given Cortisone shots and anti-inflammatory medication. Then you'll most likely have to do some physical therapy.

I've spent the last couple of months dealing with my shoulder and going to PT. The good news is that surgery is unnecessary, but the bad news is that it takes a lot of work and dedication to get back up to snuff. Hopefully, I'll soon have full (or almost full) mobility back.

The PT clinic that I go to has several frozen shoulder patients, both male and female. Most of us will never see 40 or 50 again. One man had his right shoulder frozen 3 years ago, dealt with that successfully, and now his left one is frozen. I understand that's not unusual -- when one goes, the other one has a good chance of doing so as well.

Although I spend way too much time on the computer, my injury was in no way a direct result of that. I do have osteoarthritis, and was in a bad accident a few years back, and both of those things probably have something to do with my condition. The truth is, they rarely know exactly why it happens, but once it does, you have to get it moving again in order to recover.

Anyway, get thee to an orthopedic specialist posthaste. He/she can help you. And let us know how you're doing.

I have had issues with my right shoulder due to mouse usage over the years. Its not just sploofus - its just the constant computer work that I do. And some sploofus.

My remedy is massage. A good masseuse will get in there and work out all of the muscles that are getting knotted up in there. Unfortunately, you need to do it on a regular basis for it to be effective and I don't have the time or the money to have weekly massages. I always say I'm going to go at least once a month and then the next thing I know, 3 months have gone by.

Before you go with surgery, shots, etc., see if you can get a masseuse to loosen up your shoulder. Schedule at least a 90 minute massage so they can devote about a half an hour to the shoulder, and then make sure you get a good body massage along with it.

I'm addicted. For birthdays, Christmas, mother's day, etc., all I ask for is massages. Its the best gift EVER.

Marilyn, is it a frozen shoulder or a sore shoulder? These are two very different beasts. Icy Hot (and I do love it!) will not cure a frozen shoulder, nor will massage -- although I'm all in favor of getting a massage any time I can.

At the end of my hour and a half workout at Physical Therapy, my therapist actually does massage my shoulder. It involves a lot of stretching and loosening up, and is not always pleasant. But at the end, she rubs the knots out of my neck and shoulder, so all is forgiven.

Again, a frozen shoulder does not cure itself, and if that's indeed what you have, a doctor is unfortunately your best bet.

There's no question that too much Sploofing contributes to a sore arm! I've had to cut back some because I need the arm for other things!

I recommend researching desktop ergonomics to improve your posture and the way you function while using the keyboard. Getting an ergonomic specialist would be ideal, but would cost more. It would be worth every dime to keep Sploofusing, though!

Then, after your ergonomic adventure ... Go get a massage! :D

I think Microsoft, not Sploofus, is to blame. Several years ago I was doing a ton of PowerPoint work, which, as you all may know, is quite mouse intensive. My hands and forearms grew extremely sore, and my grip strength suffered as well. I visited a physical therapist, who recommended some stretching exercises that worked out very well.

Hold your arm straight out in front of you and stretch out your fingers vertically, then, with the other hand, pull the outstretched fingers toward you and hold for 5-10 seconds. Then do the same except with your fingers extended down and fingers pushing out from your body. Repeat this several times in a session, and do several sessions throughout the day.

Yes, they used to tell us to stop the "repetetive motion" at least once an hour and move around to prevent that problem.
Another problem I used to have was "floaters" in my eyes, which went after I retired.

There was a time I had a BAD PAIN in my shoulder for about 3 months, nothing fixed it.
Then someone pointed out to me that although we had high of the AIR VENTS at work was aimed directly at my back !!!! Just moving my chair a few inches solved the problem!!!!
