WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE ALL THE FUN OUT OF THIS SITE

We are so tired of all the cheating people in WordPuzzles - why can't they just play it for the fun and not for BLOOD - it is only a darn site - not life or death.

Over the last couple of weeks, I think I've spotted a cheater in quiz taking. This person only takes actor/actress FITB, almost always gets 100, yet the time is really high-not high because your dial up is slow, but high like they have IMDB in another window or something. I gotta tell ya, it's really starting to bug me! What can be the fun in this? Except for the fact that they are pulling a "Gaslight" on me (a term I'm sure they will have to google to understand). As I've said before, cheaters' parents didn't raise them right!

If you don't get so worked up about something so meaningless, you will probably enjoy the site much more. As you said, it isn't life or death.

Joel/donna and Leah: There are always going to be people who try to cheat the system, whether it's here at Sploofus, cutting in line at Disneyland or filling out their tax forms. Try to ignore them (because you'll never be rid of them) and enjoy yourself!

So true Violet - I about took a guys head off the other day at the gas station - we had waited in line for quite awhile because the price was fairly good - along comes a guy and pulls right ahead of the lady in front of us and proceeds to get his gas - I had enough - so I lit into him - he had a horrible excuse for cutting - the worse thing about it was that the attendent did nothing about it - why do people have to always cut corners, cheat, lie, deceive - slow down and enjoy life!

The thing is, a person who cheats on a trivia quiz in this fashion gets NOTHING, really. They don't show up at the top of the people who took the quiz because their time is low, and their sploofactor won't rise, either So, I guess the point is...who cares? Let 'em! Maybe their point is to "enrich their knowledge base"

I am an avid movie watcher, although not as much these days due to not enough hours in my days. I admit to taking a lot of those actor/actress quizes, and I am at most times good at them. I wouldn't really have a need to use the internet to know what movie some star played in. Besides, if someone was taking the time to look up the answers, wouldn't that slow their time down instead of speed it up? I just wanted to let you know that not all good quiz takers are cheaters.

Ummm, I didn't mention any names. And the times are high, as in high numbers, not high on the scoreboard.

I admit that I have researched some of the wordpuzzles but only because of 2 things.

1) It's in a subject that I have no hope of getting in unless I take 300 turns.

2) I didnt at all for the first 30 or so I took and even the ones I felt I was amazing at I was 30th or 40th on the list. It got old.

I've only researched 3 or 4 but I'll stop since it offends. I'll just go back to feeling the same way some of the rest of ya do... Besides, I hate research! I did enough of that in college. :c)

I wasn't trying to imply that you were naming certain people. Sorry if it sounded like it. It was a generalization, more or less. I was just saying that some people CAN do the quizzes 100% correct in a fast amount of time without cheating.

Let's hear it for Word Rounds!! You just can't cheat there and the only thing people complain about is their loading time. I don't know why you folks keep beating yourselves up over everyone else's times and moves.

Because it's a competition. I'm sure you could enter a marathon just for fun, too, and not worry about other runners taking steroids, but those who actually want to compete on a level playing field have every right to complain. If there's "cheating" going on, the best solution is not aimply to ignore it, but to try and get rid of it.

I completely agree with you eskimba. Should you just turn your head to those who jump out of the car ahead of you to finish the race? Or should you stand up and speak your mind?
I am a venter and it peeves me to no end that vermin need to cheat to feel superior.

Well, I wouldn't worry about the other runners taking steroids, who would care? steroids don't really help runners. Everyone knows that being from Kenya helps runners! But, to expand upon your analogy, (and I am talking SOLELY about the trivia quiz cheaters, which I was in my previous post) The Trivia quiz "cheater" is not taking "steroids" in this sense, but valium. Their times won't be as good as the people who actually KNEW the answers, and there are plenty of people who DO know the answers, so those people will be on top.
I can't really speak to the word puzzle cheaters who get the word puzzle in 11 moves with times of oh, 1000, 2000, and sometimes 3000 seconds, except that it makes me laugh to see it. The fact that it DOES place them squarely on top in this case, because the rest of the population IS truly guessing, could be sorely vexing, I suppose...if you really had nothing else in your life to be vexed about, which it seems that some people don't. BYGONES!

Ok, steroids, valium, whatever. I won't argue that irrelevancy. The point being that those who "cheat" (and it has yet to be decided whether using research aids in WordPuzzles is really considered cheating) take away the ability to compete from those who wish to do it without cheating. That's why some of us can't just "ignore it", because it directly affects our ability to enjoy the site. It's not that we take the site "too seriously", it's just that the site cannot be enjoyed the way it was designed to be.

OK, enough of my ranting. I'll get off my soap box now.

Hey Mr. Soapbox (aka eksimba)

If I told you that I didn't look any of my answers (knowing that I admit to looking them up sometimes, like on Nobel Prize Winners or English Tunnels) would you believe me?

I know that many have said they are pleased that Word Puzzles are not timed. However, that is the only solution I can think of (so far) to circumvent Google searches to solve the puzzles. If there was a certain time limit for each of the five puzzles, most would be very hard-pressed to find the answers online. Most, but not all.

As for those who have a 2nd/3rd/80th account or use their girlfriend or husband's information-- I think Sploofus is doing a great job of weeding them out bit by bit.

So besides asking people not to use Google to solve the WP (since that would only work on, say, 1% of people) what sort of solution do you propose?

Well, I don't claim to have a "solution". Heck, outside of my own opinion, I don't even know if we have a "problem" which needs a "solution".

The way the WordPuzzles are set up, it's pretty much impossible to completely prevent the use of outside aids (such as the all-knowing Google), and industrious players will always find a way. But that doesn't mean it doesn't still suck when people do it.

But, I have thought about it quite a bit and have a few suggestions which may help just a little:

Firstly, it would be nice if the sploofus management would just come out and say, once and for all, whether the use of outside research aids should be considered "cheating" on WordPuzzles or not. I don't think it's ever been said. A simple "it's a fact of life, get used to it" or "it's cheating, so please don't do it" would suffice.

Also, cleverer WordPuzzle topic choices may help lower the advantage that crossword-dictionary or wikipedia users have over those who would prefer to play au-natural. Instead of topics like "Shakespeare Tragedy Titles", which is a very finite list easily found and researched, perhaps phrases which do not lead themselves so readily to research and lists could be used. Maybe sploofus is already trying this, as I have found that recent puzzles are more like that.

Anyhow, one doesn't have to have a foolproof solution to a cheating problem in order to complain about said cheating. Cheating sucks; we can all agree to that. We should be able to request that puzzle takers use a modicum of self-policing without having to depend on technology to enforce it for us.
