Humph - Elvis caused one of my friends to refuse to talk to me for weeks! She was a fan and when he died on my fifteenth birthday she blamed me!

I can NOT miss the finale of So You Think You Can Dance, sweetie, but I promise to catch the rebroadcast of LK from GL later tonight. I have a few Elvis reminiscences of my own, but I try to keep them for January. I hate commemorating death.

ELVIS AND SCATTER

...Scatter was the ideal frat-house mascot. A forty-pound, three-foot-tall chimpanzee, he had been trained by his first owner, a Memphis cartoonist who used him on his local TV show, to wear clothes, drink whiskey and raise hell with women. When Elvis first brought the beast out to Hollywood, he was enthralled with his antics. Elvis would treat him like a baby, carrying him around on his shoulders, showing him off for company and even changing his diapers. What tickled the Guys must about Scatter was the fact that he was so damn horny. Just let a girl step in the house and old Scatter would be hot on her tail. He would lift up her skirt and stick his head up toward her crotch. He would follow women to the bathroom or try to get inside while they were on the toilet. He would also chug-a-lug a few drinks at the bar and then turn around on his stool and start whacking off in some girl's face.

Elvis was always thinking of fresh ways to use Scatter as a device for driving people crazy. He would have the chimp dressed up in his cute little middy suit and tennis sneakers. Then Scatter would be enthroned in the back seat of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and driven about by one of the Guys wearing a chauffeur's cap. That night Elvis would scream with laughter as the chauffeur, generally Alan Fortas (who has a somewhat simian build), would recount the stories of how this motorist almost ran off the road staring at the chimp or how that old lady looked shocked or a cop on a corner did a triple take as the car went by. What really bugged Elvis was that they could never find one of those trick cars, like they have in the circus, that can be driven from the rear by a hidden operator while the ape sits up front turning the driving wheel. To roll down Hollywood Boulevard on an afternoon with Scatter at the wheel of a big costly Cad, casting looks to right and left with a driver's cap on his head and his long funky fingers wrapped around the wheel -- oh, God! Wouldn't that be heaven!

Short of the ultimate thrill, however, there were lots of other tricks you could play with the chimp. One of his most celebrated exploits was the time he got loose at the Goldwyn Studio and climbed up the drainpipe to the second-floor office of the boss, Sam Goldwyn. When Scatter came swinging through the window, Goldwyn's secretary screamed in horror and fled from the room. Scatter kept on going until he was in the Big Man's private office. Before the astonished movie mogul could utter a word, the ape had leaped on his desk and was cavorting among his contracts, pub shots and pictures of his grandchildren. Fortunately, the animal was well diapered, so he couldn't do anything totally outrageous.

Wait a minute. Do you have a monkey because Elvis had a monkey? If you do, you're WAY worse than I ever was. I obsessed over records and movies and scrapbooks, but I wasn't taking no primate in my house. 'Cept Big John. I'm watching the show. Haven't seen Priscilla in a while; she's morphing into Cher. Amazing.

While in the Navy, I had many long trips across the Atlantic (20-30 days without seeing land). We travelled in a formation with about seven ships and we all had Elvis movies. After doing a fourteen hour day, watching an Elvis movie was always a kick. There was a reason Elvis was called "The King" and every guy growing up in the '50s and'60s knew it. Elvis loved to live, but unfortunately, he trusted too many of the wrong people. Elvis made music that you could sing, dance and pray with. There'll never be another one like him again. Thank God for the time he was around.

So true, Vickie! Been time-tripping to GI Blues while cleaning the kitchen this afternoon. Is there a more reliable way to feel 14 again? If there is I never heard of it, and other music doesn't do it nearly as well for me.

Trying to remember how old I was - think it was about 1971-73 - my dad was working on a radio station in vegas - so the whole family got to go with him "on vacation" - we stayed in the youth hotel while my mom & dad went out - and my brother and I got to meet Elvis - "barely" as he came by and stuck his head in on his way to the show to say hi to the kids -- it was awesome

I remember the day he died - my friend Lisa R. and I cried - what a lot of joy he brought people over the years -

I remember my Mom singing along & imitating Elvis when I was really little. The first 45 I bought was Return To Sender, when I turned 10. Used my birthday money. As the music changed I turned my back, for a time, on most of the early artists, but never Elvis & neither did any of my girlfriends. Now my 15 yr old son is a huge fan. Long may he reign

Forgot to mention, we are waiting for an original Greek version of Because Of Love, to come in the mail, to add to my son's 45 Elvis collection.

My first memory of Elvis was on the Ed Sullivan Show, and I was 12 years old. He has always been a part of my life, and I guess I thought he always would be. It was such a shock to hear he had passed away, and it took a long time for it to really sink in and what that would mean. I have never met him in person, but have been to Graceland, and it seems Elvis has always been a part of every memory. He was one of a kind, and there'll never be another. He had music for everyone. He had Rock, Ballads and Gospel. He loved his mother, had a heart of gold and never forgot where he came from. He attracted people like a magnet from all walks of life, and is truly missed. The thousands who stood in line for the all night vigil at Graceland in temperatures of 105 degrees is just an example of how much he was loved.

My first 45 was One Night. I got it for Christmas with my first record player, a little red 3-speed in a box with a white carry strap, when I was 12. The other record I got was Danny Boy by Conway Twitty. Dunno what happened to that one but I had One Night until after I was married.
