If you wait on your TQOTD for one category, before wagering, your chances of getting it are 1/9 I think.
Your chaces of not getting it are 8/9.
What's the chances of NOT getting your category for 19 days? one in ten? seems like a long wait....
Garrybl -- hoping for a vocabvulary question before the end of the century...

Just went 14 days waiting for the same category. Won the wager though!

This one's pretty simple. If you have one pet category, no exempted category, and you can assume the chances of each category coming up are equal, the chances of an n consecutive day period having no occurrences of that category are 8/9 raised to the nth power.

Thus, for 10 days, it's about 31%. For 20, it's a bit under 10%.

Y'all must be the ones hogging the geography questions. I've had enough physical science questions to earn a BS degree!

I had 8 Physical Sciences in 21 days!

Just block all of the other topics and you will have Vocabulary each day. I think you can do this.

I think you can only block one topic.

I'm waiting for vocabulary also, Garrybl! I know I haven't had one in at least 14 questions because I would have saved it for my wager.

I've been having vocabulary, my favorite, after a long dry run with obscure rap stars LOL - well not all the time - but I figure my time is about to run out - I have no exempted categories either

So...who's hogging the vocabulary? I'm vehament...errr, vehiment...err, I really want to know!

I advanced 3 levels one time waiting for a Vocabulary question. I'll get 3 and 4 Books and Authors or Physical Science in a row but only once have I gotten two Vocabulary in a row. What's up with that?

Gimme all your Physical Science Questions!

I'll trade you ALL the sports questions for some vocabulary too!
However, I have Sports on my blocked TQOTD list, coz I am such a dud at it!

Coincidentally, I was just thinking how long it had been since I had seen a vocabulary TQOTD.....and figured it would be well over ten days by now. I save my wager tokens and vocabulary Qs for when I am newly into a level, then let loose!
Maybe the editors need to write a bunch more to bring up the rotating tally???

Must admit I just take them as they come - only if I've got three waiting (Monday morning) that I might have a choice on my wager question.....yesterday's happened to be Geography........250,000,000 winner

I only wager on book questions. I've had dubious vocab questions come up twice and it's made me gun shy.

Banomet - You can ship all your science questions over to me. Those are the only ones I wager on.

So why do I get sports questions about every second day? AND though my category exemption is in music, how come when I am challenged it is invariably in the music category?

I had a string of six TQOTD's with a correctness level in the 10% level or less. I had one that said it was 2.8%. That's a lot of wrong answers. Hey !!, we're not playing for money or prizes, why make it so hard ???? My other complaint has been what is called negative answers or negative questions. Example: what answer doesn't fit with the rest of the answers. My complaint is why not ask for the correct answer, not what is the wrong one. I have taken tests for Government jobs and more recently CDL license tests and these type questions have been eliminated. I went to school in the '50s + '60s and all we were asked was correct answers, not the wrong answer.

I think I make sense, Liam

Well then Liam....did you do it twice for emphasis????

LOL @ Rowlanda.

Bill, I personally see no problem with the "which is NOT" sort of questions. They follow the same basic problem-solving logic, just in reverse. What does irritate me is when this type of question includes an "All of these," response, which almost invariably is the correct answer. Good for information and knowledge, bad for quiz style points, IMO.

I'm waiting to accept congratulations.
Since August 3rd I have now gone 30, count them 30 days without a vocabulary wager question.
Down to a 1% chance or so of this peculiarity I believe.
Are you out there sploofus; give us a sign (or better yet a vocab question to wager on).

This one's for you Barry....

1. Kill your In-Laws
2. Related to a Doctor
3. German pickle
4. Two firkins
5. Five Kilos

No cheating now....

sounds like a measurement o 4... but I'm agog.

Yes Missashlee, I made it up....opened up
the dictionary and picked a word....
And Yes, the answer is No.4 Barry
Did you Google it????

Erm... I knew that one.
Used to get beer delivered in firkins and kilderkins, when I ran pubs. Damned heavy things they are too! It's also the name of a small brewery somewhere in England - I forget where.

Barry, I'm not convinced you deserve congratulations. Excel tells me that the probability that 30 random TQOTDs won't contain a vocabulary is about 3%. Given that there are 30,000 members of Sploofus, there should be 900 people posting their dissatisfaction each month. There aren't, so I wonder if the randomiser isn't random enough!

There's gonna be an insane rash of wagers when the vocab drought is broken.

I'll take all the Physical Science questions you can send me. I hardly seem to get them these days. Whoever wants my sports and Books and Authors can have them!

I've been burned a few times on vocab with some bizarre question where you mouth drops open and you watch your time click away. Its happened enough where I'm gun shy for wagers. I'll take the music questions that no one wants.

In respose to Parsman's inflamatory trolling

Only gold members get to use wager tokens so they dont lose out on the wager element, and they dot get to post here so even if there were 900 of them we would not know.
So there; yah boo sucks.

To Barry and everyone else suffering through TQOTD Vocabulary droughts: don't give up hope! I had a birthday recently and received extra wager tokens from Justin. Over the next 11 days, I had 6 Vocabulary questions! That's right - 6 Vocabulary TQOTD's! I couldn't believe my luck, especially after reading this thread. Having posted this message, I've probably jinxed myself and won't see another one for months, but it was fun while it lasted...
Here's wishing everyone plenty of Vocab's in the near future!

the long wait has come to an end.
one wager on vocab and one successful showdown later I can confirm that the long national nightmare is indeed over.
Thanks for all the kind words (except Parsman's)

My boyfriend only logs in once a week or so to do his TQsOTD. Last time he had 3 vocabulary questions waiting for him. I told him how many people here would be jealous (including me!), but he would much rather have seen a few music questions, which he seldom seems to get.

Well Jeanne, Sploofus giveth and Sploofus taketh away. After the 5th or 6th Vocab. TQOTD appeared, I almost began to dread seeing them. I'm convinced that the more I get now, the longer my drought will last when it arrives...and it will!

Unfortunately, I had an education in probability. The coolest thing I remember is that, if all things are equally likely, it is like a chocolate chip cookie.

'Nuff said.

Related to skill in vocabulary is skill in grammar, presumably. That's why I was surprised to read "What's the odds" and "What's the chances..." in the original post. What are the odds and what are the chances of making such a language faux pax in a thread about language?

Anyway, I can't say I get more or less vocab TQOTDs than any other category. But, along with Music & Musicians, it is a category I am willing to wager on.

What's the odds so long as you're happy is a cockney phrase; thus I was quoting not parsing.
But I also wanted to say that the vocab drought is now firmly broken. Normal service eventualy gets resumed, I suppose!

I don't experience these problems. I have a random mix all the time and have never exempted a category.

In my penultimate Vocabulary question - I read the question wrong

In my latest Vocabulary question, I totally forgot to Wager....

I had one Vocabulary question in the past month. I was trembly with anticipation and gratitude for the blessing bestowed upon me: I wagered a million points. Then I got overexcited, and messed up the answer!! Bye-Bye to the million...................
