I took it, survived it, didn't do very well, and had fun doing it. Go in with that attitude, and you have nothing to fear.

quite fun - should have had better score by about 15, but my own fault...quite enjoyable..

Loved this puzzle! Lots of fun, especially after all the recent controversy. I did notice however, a spelling error in one of the Harry-related phrases. It's probably not enough to throw anyone off, but it's still not quite right.

I agree that it was not as technical as I had feared. Well done the editors for keeping it sane.
But it still was not my favorite by a long chalk. Oh well; horses for courses.

Thanks, 73boo, we spotted the item you were probably citing, and that is being fixed now.

Geez Steve - not all of us wives are mall rats. Some of us are actually women with rods.

I didn't say the wife couldn't go fishing. My grandma was a superb fisherperson, and my mom was pretty good, as well. My wife isn't much on it, but will go and is happy to clean them.

Could someone NASCARy explain this for me, especially regarding the point-swallowing use of has/had?

"Harry Potter has Dementors; NASCAR had Dale Earnhardt Sr."

Dale Earnhardt Sr is dead. Past tense. I gather dementors are still extant in Potter universe?

Yeah, I know that. I meant as far as the *meaning* is concerned. Dementors are soul-suckers that drive you insane. I thought Earnhardt was well liked.

He was better liked after he died, and a lot of that has transferred to his son. I remember someone saying after he death "I cheered when he crashed and cried when he died." That statement makes perfect sense to a fan. We're so used to seeing them walk away from horrific crashes that it comes as a great shock when one gets killed. Lots of us say we "hate" drivers when what we really hate is the regularity with which they beat our favorites. I "hate" a lot less since we lost him. Polls before his death showed him at the top of both "most loved" AND "most "hated" lists.

Dementors, I couldn't tell you. Wouldn't know one if it knocked on my door with a name tag on.

One of Dale, SR.'s nicknames was The Dominator.

You forgot Ironhead. And yup, I called him all those things, but he was still one of the best I've ever seen. Top 5 for sure.

I can't remember ever hearing him called the Dominator, so I did a google and got this:

"Around that time [1986] an entrepreneur named Hank Jones had dubbed Earnhardt the Dominator and had printed t-shirts and souvenirs with the moniker. Although the Dominator merchandise never sold well, Jones followed a new hunch and reordered more Earnhardt souvenir merchandise with a different nickname, calling Earnhardt the Intimidator instead. The new name hit pay dirt, and Jones made $180,000 selling Intimidator souvenirs from a trackside trailer in 1985. Before long the name and the logos were registered with the copyright office, and sales outlets were expanded to include a cable television shopping network. Earnhardt created his own marketing company, Sports Image Incorporated, to handle the business, and the name of Dale Earnhardt Sr. became synonymous with the new alias, the Intimidator."

Watching Earnhardt come up through the field when time was running short kept me glued to my chair. You knew some other drivers were going to be headed to the wall with a little help from his front bumper, all the while hoping it wasn't your favorite that stood in his way.

He was a good man, and one of the greatest drivers that ever lived. Damn his hide.

I'm sorry, but when I hear "The Dominator", I can't help but think of those stereo speakers in "Ruthless People". Maybe that's why Dale needed a new nick
