LIMITS ON WAGERS AND SHOWDOWNS

I appreciate this topic does not affect all that many payers, but I only realized relatively recently that there is a cut off on wagers of 1 billion (essentially meaning thsat once you get beyond 4 billion you have an artificial cut off. Fair enough; and Justin did a poll to establish that he should not go retrospectively into the top players scores and adjust their past wagers to reflect that.
However showdowns are similarly limited -- and I'm not sure why it is that the ax is set at about 250 million (something to do with 2 to the power of 32 I know... but that is not the point).
Wagers are 25% of your score and showdowns 10% of the score. If you want to use limits surely the sensible upper limit for showdown is 400 million not 250 million to keep proportions consistent. Otherwise at some point they cease to be worth all that much.
Apologies for boring everyone who has not reached cut off points yet!

We had a discussion about this a while ago. I remember it was all math related. I am still in favor of a system that will let me trade in showdown tokens, which I never use, for wager tokens.

That would be unfair if the potential value of a wager token is greater. Why are you scared of showdowns? BokBokBOK!

The reason I don't issue showdowns is that I have no control over the category I will be given. If I am risking points, yet the other person is risking nothing, I should at least get to choose the category. Why should I risk my points on a chance of getting a question in my weakest category when it might be the other person's strong suit. That is why I do wagers. I can wait a wager on a category where I feel I have the best chance of success.

Still waiting for mine. I've climbed three and a half levels and seen exactly one. Showdown tokens are so devalued at this level I don't bother unless it may gain me a position. I'm not comfortable with challenging the same player several times in a row to gain a position.

Yeah, but even with a wager you risk getting a totally inane question. I still say: BokBokB'BAWKKKK.

*That's a chicken noise BTW.

When you've got 4 billion points, give or take a few billion, does it even matter anymore?

I agree with Tuz. After being burned enough times at a probably perfectly simple music question where I've never heard of the song or any of the singers I will never again take a chance at a Showdown in the current setup as the challenger.

I do wagers, but in only one category. If 2.0, should it ever arrive, allows the challenger to select the topic, I'll start using my Showdown tokens again, where I at least will have a chance. Why do I care about losing the points? Because they're there and they're mine. If points don't matter, why have them? Illogical perhaps, but that's me.

Guess I'm just more of a risk taker!

Yes you are genius w, and you've done pretty well whenever you challenged me!
I agree with the risk reward equation; those who like showdowns and are good at them take them and enjoy them, and you dont have to use them if you dont want to.
All I'm saying is that as your scores go up showdowns become far less material than wagers, and the logic of why that is escapes me.

Maurlin, Tuzilla, moooooove over. I'm in your camp.

Currently, I am plotzing. I only wager on science questions, and right now I have no wager tokens left. So, what do I get - six, count em, six - science questions in a row. Finally had to take the 1st one cause it was going to expire. Still need .4 to get to the next level, and am waiting for other questions, so I can bet on the science. Ain't happening.

So how do the Sploofgods know to wait till you are out of wager tokens to send you your category??

Alice

Same way they know when you're sitting on a cache of wager tokens waiting for a category that's shown up once in 39 days.

Barry...Sorry we have strayed from the intent of your post, regarding the maximum points allowed in a Showdown, but it provides us an opportunity to vent about a side issue. We very rarely fail to make the most of that opportunity!
