Just wanted to say that I noticed the new banners today. Were they there before and I just didn't see them? Anyway, I am sure I haven't seen them all yet, but, I would like to compliment Sploofus on his choices of who to let pop up on here. The majority of the ads seem to be along the public service line. Drinking and Driving, education, health issues. There are others too, for game sites and ipods and such. I just wanted to thank Sploofus for choosing his 'partners' carefully.

I've notice the pop ups also. I'm also glad to see that they are along the line of public service. I think they've been here a couple of days.

When we had the debate over the price increase or the banners, I said to Sploofus (and others agreed) that we would agree to banners, but we did not want banners that blinked, sputtered, moved around, etc. I thought--although I guess I was wrong--that Sploofus listened and would do that.

There are a number of reasons for not wanting these garish mostrosities. First, they seriously degrade the experience. Second, if you are trying to concentrate on a quiz or word rounds, etc., they are extremely distracting. Third, at least in my case, they give me headaches, something I don't enjoy in the least. That's why I avoid sites with these kinds of ads.

Ironically, one of the reasons I became a gold member was to get away from that awful free environment with all of the blinking, annoying banner ads. I certainly am not prepared to just up and leave right now, but I can say very seriously that I probably won't be spending much time here from now on. I feel that Sploofus just did not listen. There are plenty of banner ads out there that don't degrade the experience by constantly wiggling, jiggling, etc., in order to get our attention.

Quite honestly, I hadn't even noticed 'em!

I haven't seen one yet, far as I can tell...

The ads are making me have to scroll down to read and answer quiz questions. Is there any way to change my monitor settings so I can avoid that? TIA!

Tracy, I hid my navigation bar and it helps a little. I don't know what browser, if any you use but i adjusted mine Thru my "View" settings.

I disagree. Sploofus did listen. They were going to over double the cost for a gold membership because of the rising cost to maintain the site and get rid of the ads all together. Because of us, mainly the gold members who said they would not renew their membership because of the high cost, Sploofus said they would introduce the ads and only increase the cost by $5.00. I believe they did listen to us, the people that keep this site alive.

The other problem with the blinking banners and pop up ads is it can take away from the time you answer a question. There are many pop up blockers out there that will block the pop ups. Anyone taking a showdown challenge could have a hard time beating the time with the blinking banners. They will slow down the response time when answering a question. Why can't the blinking banners be put on the home page and not on TQOD, wordpuzzle, etc pages?

And if all annoying things are banished from Sploofus, what would I do with all my free time?

Is it me or are the banners really slowing load time on Word Rounds? I can't get a WR to load in under 20 seconds and it is really frustrating me! Anyone else having this problem?

My wordrounds seem slower too. I don't mind the banner. Once I get past the first word in wordrounds, I don't see the banner anymore which eliminates any distraction.

I reckon that my wordrounds are about 12-15 seconds slower since the banners reappeared, probably means the broadband users get even more of an advantage

Ah well such is life

What really makes me PO'd is sitting there watching the browser load stuff from then after 7 or 8 seconds the word round starts to load. The speed of loading is now at the mercy of the advertisers. The ad gets loaded first!

I would like to perhaps clarify my position. I do not object to the banners. I voted for them too. I object to the type of banners that Sploofus bought. These degrade the experience badly. Quite honestly, I have supported Sploofus strongly in the past and have thoroughly enjoyed the site. My problem is simply that I don't care to spend time at a site--any site--where instead of being fun, the experience is unpleasent.

I thought that we had assurances that wouldn't happen here with the banners.

It does strike me as odd that this chat page which presummably does not need to load as quickly as possible does not have a banner - and the word rounds / QOTD do have a banner.

Mindmonkey - what are you finding so offensive, all the ads I have seen have been pretty tame.

I have never been a fan of advertisements, but can accept them to keep the price down and the site open. Besides, I have been at some of the competing sites like Funtrivia and been bombarded with blinkers, flashers, jumpers and vibrating banners, and most hellish of all, incessant pop-ups. Anything going on here is a mosquito on an elephant in comparsion.

Well either my popup blocker is supreme or I am blind. I have always noticed the little red outlined box that says Ads by Google right above the NOW PLAYING box, but I have yet to see a pop up or a banner ad. I have noticed the loading time as has my husband but didn't really know what was causing it.

Just another note with regard to the banner ads. I signed on my computer at work today and did see several banner ads.

Sploofus listened and I am happy with whatever we have to do to keep this awesome site up and running! My times may be slower, but I am still having a blast!
