READY FOR FOOTBALL TRIVIA

It would be appreciated, at least by this English FOOTBALL follower, if American "football" (played mainly with the hands) could be properly described so that one is not disappointed to find a lack of trivia about FOOTBALL! Maybe even a WP about proper Football? We have had Nascar after all! Pretty Please!

I beg your pardon, Achad. I am not a follower of any sports really, but created that puzzle because the Americans were beginning their football season and no one else had done a puzzle. I'll see what I can do about a puzzle about the other kind of football.

I think soccer should be promoted. It is an excellent passtime for those without upper body strength, or too feeble to retain plays or strategies, or perhaps those born with flippers instead of arms or some other terrible misfortune.

Trouble is, Achad, that while you can define that you mean English Football by calling it Soccer, there's no way (certainly within the length-of-field restrictions we're told the WPs are written under!) to say that you mean the American version!

And since this site is mostly populated by Americans you can't really blame poor Sploofanatic for not specifying that the puzzle name meant the most popular meaning of the word ... in fact, come to think of it, everyone has always insisted that should be the default meaning of any word in this game - the most popular one!

And no, I'm not American - I'm true Brit, too!

The Word Puzzle I just took was entitled Ready For US Football Trivia...Could Sploofanatic
changed the title to appease everyone and show that this puzzle was about American Football?...Or was it always listed this way?

I changed it after Achad's complaint. I hope that doesn't offend anyone.

I've always contended that if Americans played FOOTBALL the way the rest of
the World does - no padding, guards, helmets etc. - it would be an entirely
different game....say - more like SOCCER!!!!
And don't forget, they also play RUGBY without protections of any kind!!!!

If they played American football without protection they'd have dead people on the field every week.

I guess there's a market for that.

Smaug..........I AM freaking out at your comment!!!

I kind of knew it would be American football when I saw the WP title, no surprise.

I'll second Achad's request and say pretty please, Sploofanatic, for an English Football WP.

Hey guys, comments much appreciated, and the change of title! Look forward to the "footy" WP. By the by, who plays in the World Series? At school it was only the girls that played 'rounders'! Ooops, that's started another debate, sorry! Cheers, Andy.

I enjoyed that - although I'm not a football triva person - I escaped with all my points and made one stupid mistake that cost me 3 moves - I learned FIVE new things today!

Hey ANDY....PLEASE stop with the sexism....whenever men want to
insult each other, they use "female" names and adjectives!!!!
For anyone who doesn't know - "Rounders" is the English name
for Baseball. Real men play Cricket!!!!

Hey Rowlanda, apologies if I sounded sexist- wasn't the intention. The girls always battered us boys at hockey and were very vicious with those sticks! I'm sure it was the same on Penny Lane Playing Fields!

Now that comment just wasn't cricket, which as we all know, is baseball on valium. I think soccer has potential if they were to incorporate a few new rules from basketball and hockey, like no go back across the center line once you cross it, and the checking rules were tweaked. Maybe everyone could have a stick or something, since arms a current useless to the game except for throw ins and pulling your shirt off and looking stupid running around waving it.

Perhaps we should get someone from down-under to explain Aussie Rules (Are there any?): You there Rick?

No explanqtion needed. Last man standing wins. And bonus points if you get the guys in the lab coats to wiggle their fingers.

All kidding aside, Aussie Rules is fun to watch.

How about a shinty WP?
If you thought Welsh placenames WP's are bad...
(For those who don't know shinty: think hockey on steroids, played by very angry sword wielding Jacobites. And you've just insulted their mum. And surely cricket isn't a sport - I was under the impression it was a penance of come sort .)

Hey JIM
Are you talking about Liverpool and Windsor in ENGLAND....
or the one's in CANADA????
Please let me know - before the meeting????

Funnily enough....in England, Hockey was also a "girl's" game.
I always played in Goal - because I was "on the ball".

Also ANDY....I was ALWAYS sweet and wonderful, NEVER vicious.
I wasn't upset about your choice of words to make a point.
Just making my own point!!!!

Hey Donna, toughen up! Have you seen our Aussie guys play a game of Aussie rules football? These guys are insane! There is far more contact than in US Football and a LOT more running by ALL team players. They can jump metres in the air , using others' shoulders as step ladders; they can run 100 miles/hr at each other and NOT even have the ball; There is NOOOO protection in AFL other than a mouth guard! Toughen up! {Play a REAL sport - The sport of aerial gladiators! LOL Thanks for the mass debate!
Rick
If you don't believe me, watch a game if you see it on FOX sport. You will be hooked!
