Is anyone else bothered by obvious cheating? I see people on the leaderboard with huge scores who, when it comes to defending wager tokens have a 16% winning percentage. Do they suddenly become stupid when challenged or, are they using 2 accounts (as I suspect)to preview questions? I know there's not much to be done about this, but when someone answers 10 questions in 12 seconds I get suspicious.

I'm sure there are cheaters around, but challenge results aren't going to prove it. I don't think I've ever won one of those challenges, which I think can be chocked up simply to not being as fast on the answers as the people who regularly use their tokens.

It's not possible to use two accounts to preview questions. The people you see near the top of the leaderboards got there by 1. being here longer and 2. judicious wagering in strong categories. Lots of players rarely do showdowns because they don't initiate them, possibly due to knowing they have a slower connection and are more likely to lose? The people with the low percentages are usually sitting on a pile of showdown tokens, while the ones with relatively high averages use them nearly as fast as they get them.

If you're looking for cheaters you're in the wrong place.

Why couldn't someone use 2 computers and 2 separate accounts to preview questions? When I see someone answer 10 qustions in a wordRound in 12 seconds I perceive a "problem". I'm sure most of those at the top of the leaderboard deserve to be there but there are those who don't. I'd say I was looking in exactly the right place.

We all get different WR, WM, and TQOTD's. No two people get the same ones, even in WR's so it isn't possible to preview anything.

Oh, and if you don't believe that, make yourself a second account and give it a try. Go play a WR on one account and see if it helps you play a WR on your other account.

Oh please god don't do that!

Try this instead - play 20 hours of WR/WM a day for a month and learn the words the way the rest of us have before you accuse us of cheating.

Also, as far as I know, one does not DEFEND Wager Tokens. They are used to make wagers on QOTDs. The percentages on each players page have nothing to do with Wager tokens. They calculate Showdown victories. A person could use Wager Tokens, answer correctly, and gain bunches of points and never have a Showdown victory. If a person is only challenged and never starts a showdown, no points are lost, but the Showdown victories would reflect 0%. Apples and Oranges and Sour Grapes.

They really dont bother me anymore. In all truth, they are the losers not us.Just look at my 20% "winning streak" lol.I have just got the courage to use my wager tokens.

I'm not claiming that the multitude cheat, but I am stating that there sre some who deserve loathing and contempt. The QOTD is the same for everyone. If you know the question (and of course the answer) it certainly is cheating. When you can use every wager token you earn without fear of losing and earn 3 wager tokens per month it is patently unfair to those who play by the rules. Of course I was referring to showdown challenges in my earlier post.

We do not all get the same Question of the Day. I know because when I am at my mom's house and she does her question and asks me for help it has never been the same question I had. Yes, there are cheaters out there. Sadly, it is true. But unless you know who they are and can prove it it is just a witch hunt. All we can do is just relax and have fun and do our best. Besides, the points are just points. They don't get us anything but bragging rights. Your post seems very inflammatory and serves only to get everyone all riled up and start sling mud at each other. There will always be cheaters no matter what. But as long as you are not one of them and have a clean conscience what's the worry? The cheaters are not taking anything from you or me.

I'm confused. If you're talking about showdowns, what was all that about 10 questions in 12 seconds? And how on earth do you think anyone cheats on showdowns, when only the challenger and the person challenged see the showdown question???

Bokeelia  (Level: 196.1 - Posts: 114)

Didn't mean to stir up so much anger. If no one thought cheating was going on, I don't think I would have gotten so many responses. I realize they are only points but wish everyone would play by the rules, if not, why keep score? The site even posts a warning about cheating and having 2 accounts, so it does exist. I wasn't attempting to be inflammatory, just airing my own gripe.

Now I'm really getting infuriated. I am clueless about the issue, but if this is about abortion or Iraq, somebody better just BACK OFF, or your going to get turned into a rat.

I'm just trying to figure out where you think the cheating is going on. I agree with you that it's loathsome and reprehensible where it happens, but it's NOT happening in TQOTD, showdowns, wagers or WordRounds. Just as friendly advice, if you don't understand the site any better than to think we all get the same QOTD, you really ought to be more careful about slinging nasty accusations around. People get offended by being called cheaters when they're not. Imagine that.

Bokeelia - Let us use myself as a case in point.

At the moment, I am #24 in the all-time leaderboards. That's pretty high, in the scheme of things. However, my showdown record, I think, is about 27%. So how did I get up there, and how come I could do that if I am that stupid?? That is basically your question. I don't pretend that you are talking about me, but I'm as good an example as anyone else.

1. I have been here almost 2 years. That's a long time in Splooftime, and you can get a lot of WordPuzzle and Quiz points in 2 years.

2. I have written a lot of quizzes. It helps, up to a point.

3. Having a solid science background, and having taught Earth Science and Biology for more years than some members have been alive, I bet on every science question that I get (except right now I am totally out of wager tokens). I am generally right, and at this level can win a billion points at a throw.

4. But I know nothing about popular culture. So if you challenge me in Movies, TV, music, etc I am definitely going to lose. Hence my lousy showdown record. I'm also not so fast.

Hope that explains how the scenario you mention could occur.

And you my large feathered friend are not the case I was making. As I previously stated, I'm not saying that any one person is cheating. I'm sure that most aren't, my concern is with those who don't play by the rules. I've been on for less than a year (more of a newbie) and play when time permits. I don't like the idea of cheating at a game like this. I play lots of golf and count all my strokes, as I expect the other members of my foursome to count theirs and, not use a size 10 shoe instead of a golf club. My compliments to you on amassing such a sizeable total.

Bokeelia- I agree with you in priciple; however, here comes the "but. My Showdown % is around where BigBurd's is. Yours is much higher, over 50%. I enjoy writing lots of quizzes and can sometimes get a million points a month there. I also take quizzes and do word rounds in addition to word puzzles, which I love. All of those accumulate points. I notice that you have never written a quiz, and you've been here 2 weeks short of one year. You don't take very many quizzes (31 when I last checked after your post), which is just as well, since you rate quizzes an average of 5.10. You probably spend lots more time golfing, which is much healthier, since you walk rather than sit at a computer. It certainly explains the disparity in total points.

I just cannot figure to what you're referring about 10 questions in 12 seconds when you discuss cheating. Is it perhaps the WordRounds? I think the cheating concern had previously been with the WordPuzzles.

Well...if I could interject my take on the WR's....

I've been here for over 2 years now. I've won a lot of Word Rounds...over 1200 of them. That probably puts me in the top 10 of winners of them. I enjoy them, and I do better at them than TQOTD's, WP's, and definitely showdowns. When I was a Platinum member, I played a lot more. You get unlimited chances as a Platinum member, and can play until your fingers break. As a gold member, you have 10 chances, so you have to be careful. What I've learned about WR's...
-It's not about knowing the answers, it's looking for 'clue' words in the questions
-Flukes happen...slow load time sometimes makes the timer start after the questions load, so that's sometimes where you see low or even negative times
-Questions sometimes repeat, and very easy to remember
-Never the same set of questions appear twice

I don't see where two accounts would make a difference. The reason that I get fast times is simply catching the clues quickly, and a lot of LUCK. Some of the fastest ones..(Slicko, Rach, Lare, and others I've missed I'm sure) have a good combination of catching the clues, and having a fast computer. Slow computers with dial-up or crappy DSL will ad at least 10 seconds to the time.

In my opinion, the easiest way to cheat is the Word Puzzles. To cheat on the other games would be much more trouble, and the random order of the questions would make it nearly impossible to remember the answers to use on another account. I believe Justin is doing his best to catch the cheaters, so I certainly wouldn't roll the dice with it. He's probably more frustrated about it than all the players together.

Well said Taz...coming from the biggest WR/WM cheater of them all. I could list the other WR/WM cheaters...(one rhymes with Flicko and begins with an S). Oogie however has perfected the cheating process. He simply uses his time machine to return to 5 minutes earlier, and the rat refuses to share the time machine, he's VERY selfish.

I, however, am perfectly honest. Honestly I am.

......... And I re-enter in about the same fashion as I exited... With people pissing and moaning about how unfair the world of Sploofus is. So and So cheats.... So and so has an unfair advantage.....

Rach66 is a cyborg on loan from the department of defense........

Same Sheet, different bed.

I noticed someone with twice the levels of me, but with 1/2 times more points.... I looked ... They've been a member since the Earth cooled, and god (little g) said "Let There Be Sploofus", which BTW, was the same time there was a version update worth noting. Apparently, they only do QOTD's.....

Are there cheaters? Probably. Will they get caught? Maybe... Will other cheaters pop up in their place? I'm sure they will.

So, In the spirit of the thread.......

Slicko, YOU'RE A CHEATER !!!! How else would you get 229,515,710 at level 18 when A2sportsguy only has 192,042,446 and is at level 85... HUH? HUH?

Hi all...I think Bookelia may mean the quizzes when (s)he speaks of 10 questions in 12 seconds. I, too, have wondered how so many people can whiz through those questions. I admit, I'm slow on the input, but some players are awfully fast. 50 y.o. fingers v. 20? Maybe. Heck, my computer even fights me, taking its dear old time. That being said, I know for certain that people have different accounts. So, while the question of the day may changed, they are able to take the same quiz more than once. I'm quite new and am enjoying this site. Even with all the cheater-babies.

LOL sometimes I'm afraid someone may think I'm cheating because my time to complete the quizzes is always huge...I may give the impression that I look up answers with google or something. I just take time to read questions carefully, and my internet connection is not superfast either.

I've wondered about the leaderboard high scoring folks and just figured that they don't have a life and are on here 24/7 but that's alright. I enjoy answering my QOTD stuff and doing some of the quizzes and challenges. It doesn't matter to me who is ahead of me or what my score is...I'm just having fun in here.

Smoke20  (Level: 62.6 - Posts: 2815)

Not QUITE 24/7! More like 18/6. I'm disabled, don't get out much, and I got up there on the leaderboard by playing lots of games and doing pretty well on most, wagering the max and doing lots of showdowns. Writing quizzes is a big numbers producer for some. There are several ways to pile up big points, especially as a paying member, and if you take part in everything available you'll be amazed how fast you can get up there!

Welcome to the boards!

Guilty as charged! I do have a life on layaway from Walmart, but I can't get off sploofus long enough to go and make the payments; not as long as Larrybus is still ahead of me on the leaderboards, anyway!

The only place where cheating is an issue is Word Puzzles - or quiz taking - QOTD, Showdowns, Wagers, WM/WR's - are all grabbed from an infinite pool of whatever it's databased in - If I had the number of each and could work an equation with the number of sploofusers who actually participate I could come up with the probability of cheating being actually able to take place in these random games - but that would be so random and useless - I'd rather waste my time googling (or yahooing) on WP's so I could join those that are accused and have something to defend myself against

Where's Smaug when you need him? He's the fellow who is always crunching numbers and odds. Hmmm, I bet he'll drop in here one of these times. As for me, I'm like you, I will spend my time either in chat or solving puzzles. I don't do numbers.

In fact, if I understand the word puzzle process I think I know a perfect way to cheat. But I'm not going to tell what it is and y'all know I sure am not cheating when on a good day I land at about 80 or 90; most days I'm out of the top 100. What the heck is the fun if you cheat?

As for scores, Smoke is right. I've been a member almost a year and have just written my first quiz. I am amazed at how fast the points are adding up. I am definitely writing more quizzes! (I'm too cowardly to do a challenge and I wager about as cautiously as challenges!).

Just enjoy yourself.
