ARE PEOPLE REALLY THAT WELL-READ AND EDUCATED (LUCKY?) OR....

Not that I wanna get yelled out and thrown out the Sploofus window with an "...And STAY out," but sometimes on the WPs that are so much more wordy and with much more obscure answers than the norm, does it take any of you by surprise how few moves are posted by the top winners? Maybe you guys all know each other and trust and believe in each other, and this is not pointed at any particular entrant as I never even notice names or user names, but is it hard for anyone else but me to believe that those few moves on those particular puzzles are legit? And no, I certainly don't mind if you try to legitimately convince/assure me that they ARE legit.

i understand how you might question if people can do these puzzles in so few moves.

veterans of word games like crosswords, scrabble, word searches, hangman and especially cryptograms find that experience invaluable when playing word puzzles here. if you study basic linguistics you learn certain patterns, how phrases are constructed. there are certain word combinations that never vary. if you write for fun or as a career, you know how words are put together.

certainly luck has it's place, as does knowledge of the category for many. i learned to teach kids to read by sight not by phonetics and that helps too.

considering all these factors, completing 5 puzzles in less than 10 moves is very likely regardless of the number of words or letters involved.

this is just my opinion, your mileage may vary...

If the last one I had on the schoolyard rhymes hadn't been totally obscure to me I would have done much better - on several of them I only put in one or two vowels and knew what they were - because i KNEW them --

On the rhyming things in the past - like using celebrities - the clues gave them to me quickly and I have had several 5'rs - few and far between.

I almost made it to wheel of fortune twice - in a previous life, I actually made money because the place where I bartended had a regular crowd and we always had the show on - people would bet against me - and half the time I made more money doing that - then in tips all day (unless it was Friday and moving into happy hour - so yes it is possible - and one day that perfect puzzle for you will pop up (like it did for Smaug who used to say the same thing) and then you will BELIEVE!
