This is rather addictive, too. Rather fun to see the grains of rice pile up. Thanks for the link.

Oooh...I like that one. It could really be addictive. The FAQ page is really interesting, too. I like that the program adjusts to your own vocab level so that you are always learning some new words but still getting some correct as well.

I've gotten to level 50. According to the site's FAQ, that's the maximum.

Hint: As in Word Rounds, if you play for a while, words start to repeat.

This was a lot of fun. I was happy to be at 37 when I reached 2000 grains of rice. Highest I got was 40. It is addicting as it goes so quickly it is easy to just keep on playing.

Me too, Nelly. 47, 48, 49, 50, back down again. If there's a spot above 50 you can't prove it by me! Fun, though, and I've helped contribute several thousands of grains of rice. They should give me the address - I've still got five pounds left over from my fake Halloween bosoms going to waste.

I have been hitting 50 a few times..then get stonkered by a word that defies all my attempts to define it!
Thanks for the link Shauna........great site!

Shame on you guy! Think of the poor bastard who has to sit there and count out all those grains of rice.

I was just checking my annual e-mail from Snopes and this free rice site was one of the topics they looked at this week. Here's the link if you are interested (BTW, it's all good news):

Not annual e-mail --- WEEKLY e-mail. Not sure where my mind was when I wrote the previous post!

I was really beginning to wonder how many grains of rice it take to amount to a hill of beans. I finally discovered that 29,000 grains of is basically equivalent to 1 pound of rice. As of 11/17/2007 they have donated 2,457,120,420 grains of rice, which equates to 84,728.3 lbs.

OMG...Steve...tell me you didn't count that out by yourself.

I can NOT seem to get to 50. I've been within one definition 2 or 3 times, but then I'll get one that I've never heard of and can't puzzle out. I should go to bed now but I want to try it just one more time...

Of course, that does not factor in friction of the grains pouring into the bowl, wind resistance or static electricity.

No, I just searched "grains of rice in a pound" on Google, got the answer, and divided the donation by that number. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really.

I saw 36,589,830 grains in a metric ton (source:, which makes 16,564 or so in a pound, according to that source.

I got to level 50 and stayed for 6 clicks and never got to a higher level. I think Chick is pulling our collective legs.
