IS IT A SPORT OR NOT

What really is the definition of a sport?

Well a sport is something where the outcome of what one person can be changed directly by what another does.

eg in football, a player may have the ball but someone else can tackle him
basketball, someone takes a shot but another player blocks it
snooker, the other player can snooker you thus making your next shot harder

Also a sport is something that cannot be played 'competitively' by yourself.

So, things like darts is not a sport
figure skating is not a sport
but here is the big one,
Golf is not a sport it is in fact an art.

A golfer may 'play' against another person, but they could realistically play it on their own. The outcome of what they do or how they play is not directly influenced by anyone else (apart from psychollogically.

I think it's too narrow a definition. By this logic you would take all track and field events as well as bowling and horse racing from the ranks of sport. Nascar not a sport? The south will revolt again.

Chess would by this definition be a sport.

The thinkg about track and fields, well something like high jump, long jump, shot put, javelin etc wouldn't be a sport they would be an art.

But the 100m race, marathon and all other races would be a sport. Say for example the person in front falls over and thus slows you down, thus they have directly influenced how you do.

What about golf when the scoring is match play? Then your opponent's situation might directly affect your strategy, depending on how many strokes you think you will need to win or halve the hole.

Diversion; recreation; amusement; competition; play.

For some people semantic hair-splitting fits the bill. I tend to be generous with definitions in most cases.

One definition: "Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors."

I do not think there has to be specific defensive action for something to be a sport, or the fact that it could also be played in a solo counting version. Golf, for instance, can be (and used to be extensively) played in match play, which is directly one on one each hole and your play and strategy each shot is determined by your opponents last shot.

I think that a sport has to have 1: competition in a win/lose sense; and 2: some level of physical skill albeit hand eye as in darts.

I think it is unfair to be biased against golf in favor of the more traditional, recognized sports such as hockey, basketball and beer pong.

Figure skating for fun (or even profit) may be an art, but when it becomes a contest to see who can do it best, it's a sport. Know any competitive ballerinas?

No i don't know any competitive ballerinas but I am hoping it is included in the next olympics.

Talking of the olympics did you know that in the past, roller hockey, gliding, cricket, croquet, rugby union and even tug of war were all in the olympics.

Here is something interesting, although the following sports are not in the olympics they are officially recognised by the IOC (internationl Olympic committee).
Netball
Orienteering
squash
Bridge
Chess
and billiard sports (including not only billiards but also SNOOKER)

In fact with the olympics to be held in 2014 in London, the English are trying to get snooker to be included as an olympic SPORT.

to me, the criteria are:

1. is an element of physical prowess, be it hand-eye (snooker) or something more physical (soccer). This knocks out, say, chess, and orienteering.

2. a competitive element of scoring against an adversary. This includes golf, but excludes, say, ballet.

Smaug has spoken. Return to your homes.

baggiob
Baggiob  (Level: 142.7 - Posts: 888)

surely by your definition, then you would have to include chess as you need hand-to-eye co-ordination for it.

Then again you need hand-eye co=ordination to read a book to, but that deffo isn't a sport unless it is a speed reading competition.

(About the orienteering, personally I do not see that as a sport (unless you are also including walking as a sport) but the IOC see it as a sport.

I wonder if anyone can actually define a sport?

To me, a sport is a leisure activity. Whether for fun or for competitive reasons. So it could be anything from a game of cards or a game of pool, bowling, tennis, golf, football, etc. I think if there are rules involved, then it is a sport.

If sport is a sport and a game is a game, how come football is a sport if people play a game of football? Golf must be niether then because you play a round of golf.

Anyone fancy a game of darts?
or a game of baseball?
perhaps a game of American football?
maybe even a game of tiddlywinks?
what about a game of tennis?

Hahaha we have all been fooled, there is no such thing as a sport, they are all games.

Sploofus please remove the sports soup category because not only is has it nothing to do with soup but there is no such thing as sport. Renaming it games would be better.

I suppose that is what brings it all home. Any question is extremely difficult if you don't know the answer. Extremely easy when you do.

You could pick any of the general topics on here, sport, music, tv etc and the tqotd could be on anything.

I had a sport question once about snooker, about how much for a certain colour, which was rather easy. Another sport question was, about who finished like 7th in a particular year in a particular sport in a country I am not from, completely impossible for me to get right.

Same with music, the question could be simple like how many members were in this famous band ........., or it could be something like how many times did such and such a singer sing such and such a word in his whole career.

It comes down to pure luck.

Of course romance is a sport.

You can score or get shut out or be out of your league.

There is first, second and third base.

Is the guy playing "Hot"...if so, it's a sport. Preferably scantily clad.

Therefore Snooker, Darts, Chess and Bowling...not sports.

Football, NASCAR (yes Smokey I said it), Baseball, etc....sports.

"LAFF" all you want. Some of us play this game (or is it a sport) because it gives a little enjoyment rather than watching the boob tube. Most of us are average or over average intelligence, too. Debating or arguing about a question or a subject can be healthy for some and not for others. For those who question my sportsmanship or maturity, I have this to say, "I don't mind losing (I am a Cubs fan), it's how I lose". Being told that I am wrong or by definition or by Sploofus interpretation tells me a question is incorrect or it isn't totally understood by its writer. When I "LAUGH", something is funny.

I don't think a golf is a nice walk ruined. At least golf has a purpose and a reason. The thing about a walk is really it is pointless (unless you are walking somewhere to do something). Take hill walking for example, you walk all the way to the top of the mountain and then what are you going to do?

Walk right back down to where you started.

It is like you have not gone anywhere at all.

A wee sporting poem for you all.

Sport is a game that is easy to play,
against other people is the usual way.
A competition of sorts
defines many sports.
But not all sports, some would say

Rugby and football make use of a ball
but a tackle may make you fall.
Running and sprints are against the clock,
Badminton uses a shuttlecock
And squash is played against a wall.

Swimming in water, maybe you will sink
or maybe skating on an ice rink
Tennis you hit balls over a net.
On sports, many people like to bet
Even poker is a sport I think.

Baseball, cricket and rounders
All make use of fielders
People ready to catch
To win a match
Fear of failing is only for failures

Sport is a game that is easy to play
Whether at night or during the day
The fans start to cheer
Then go for a beer
Or a wine if they are inclined that way.

Many games are a sport also,
it helps keep them fit in the torso
The legs and the arms
will come to know harm
Apart from cramp which just leads to sorrow

But not all sports are so energetic
Some people would just forget it
Too lazy to play
Sit on their hands all day
And say sport is just pathetic

Golf may be a good walk ruined, absolutely
Sportsmen are sporting, resolutely
Sport is a game
Under many different names
And SNOOKER is a sport, definitely.

Thanks to golf, I have visited places I would have never ordinarily visited. It is truly amazing how far you can hit a golf ball into the woods, considering it is virtually impossible to hit a golf ball out of the woods.

Anyone who does not consider golf a sport has obviously never dueled a rattlesnake with a 5-iron, wrestled an alligator, or badgered a bear in order to get your ball back.
