The last match on Duel was for $1.6 million. The question that decided the prize winner was:
A gallon of which of the following liquids is the heaviest:
vegetable oil
motor oil
they all weigh the same

When they asked the contestants about their answers one replied that it is obvious that motor oil is heavier than water. Then he paused and said "Motor oil floats on water". In an Oh My God moment he realized that his answer was wrong and he had lost the chance to win the $ 1.6 million.

I guess lossing a Sploofus trivia wager is so bad after all.

But is that an awesome game or what? Now THAT'S a Showdown system!

They could have asked them which is heavier, a pound of feathers or gold.

The answer, of course, being feathers.

....Only if those feathers are still attached to the bird, Ken.

(Is that right, Bigbird?)

That was bad play he should have used 4 chips, but how can they miss(or use more than one chip) the number of months that have 31 days or the most popular letter in the alphabet?
I don't know the money breakdown on DUEL but on Millionaire any prize over 250 K the contestant is given 250K within 30 days and the remainder spread over 10 years and for 1 million the remaining 750k paid over 20 years.

What's worse was my response while yelling at the t.v. and having a fit that neither of them new the answer... they are all the same, nitwits. Until I realized that a gallon is volume and not weight.. d'oh!! And yes Smoke.. I enjoyed it too.

A pound of feathers would weigh 16 ounces, because common items such as that are measured on the avoirdupois scale, which has 16 ounces in a pound. Precious metals are measured on the Troy scale, which has only 12 ounces in a pound.

But to confuse things even more, the two ounces are not the same. A troy ounce is about 5 grams heavier than an avoirdupois one.

Never saw the show, but at least it is something all my students should have gotten right - and they had better have been thinking of me when they screamed out the answer. Earth Science is great for quiz shows!
