OSTRACISM

After reading some of the posts just recently made, I have an idea for a mean-spirited game.
In Ancient Greece as I remember the community was able to ostracise a member of the ciommunity for ten years. (I'm thinking ten days ban from BBS but ideas on a sentence are welcome).
Everybody - well, every citizen - got to vote with a piece of pottery or ostrakos.
You put the name down and the one with the most votes was exiled.
The idea was to defuse political tension, but sploofus might need the same.
Incidentally itwas quite often the case that the proposer got ostracised himself; I know the risks....
But we do have a small cadre of persistently negative posters and maybe this might serve as a wake-up call....

But I just got back from a self-imposed ostracism!

Got a strategy to stop them coming back under another name and being worse than ever?

the theory might work but the potential for abuse makes it impractical here.

Is your idea of persistent negative posts any that disaggre with the "in" group or heaven forbid make a suggestion or ask a question?? If so, then I suppose I can count on ostracism-Linda

Right on ... It would be unfair to have just one person make all of the decisions. I propose an "Ostracism Committee" and open the nominations:

Al Sharpton, Drudge, Don Imus, Bill O’Reilly, Roseanne Barr and Rosie O'Donnell.

I am sure we can think of more.

Barry, I'm using my ostracon to vote against your suggestion. There's way too much deviciveness here now. I'm of the hold hands and sing Kumbaya school, especially in this type of online group. I certainly do not want to see the Chat area set up as a private club, excluding by vote anyone who doesn't fall in with the current mode of thinking (whatever that may be). I believe Jefferson had a quote about democracy's being mob rule by 51%, taking away the rights of the other 49.

Maybe if there was a limit to the amount of times per day one could post. Maybe if people were limited they might think more about what they said. Maybe it would cut down on petty back and forth squabbles. Maybe.

I don't care to be limited, thanks all the same. I don't throw down a C-note a year to not be allowed to say what I like, when I like, where I like.

Within reason, of course.

It was just a thought. I had read so many postings that thought people without gold or platinum memberships should not be allowed to post. I just felt it might be thought provoking.

I reject this unfair and cowardly attack on Easy and Chick Breath. They have rights here as members too, no matter how disruptive, petty, argumentative, mean-spirited, condescending, churlish, angry, and vicious they may be considered by a few, well....some, ok, really most of the members.

Actually, I believe the Athenian model was aimed at the powerful leaders, not the lowly citizens, who were granted great leeway in free speech.

So a more realistic program here would be to vote an editor out.

Garry, are you an editor? Actually, serious question.

We don't have to go back to Grecian timees. Many religious groups have practiced "shunning" for decades-one reason being to silence dissidents-Linda

Actually, anytime someone proposes some "clever" method of chilling free speech or dissension, or at least bending it to their mores, a flashing red light goes off in my head about their real motives. Which is why I asked if Garry is an editor.

this reminds me of a story i read in college, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.. the story told how everyone in town chose a piece of paper at random from a container; the person who picked the one piece with a black spot was stoned.

Ok, lots to comment on here.
I was in "The Lottery" in 1974 and won Best Supporting Actress at Fillmore High School that year. I know you're all very impressed.
I'm afraid of people who try to take away my right to say anything I want. A little too Dick Cheney for me.
If Smaug and Eesus are posting, I'm reading. If it's people who worry about who is in the "in crowd" (whatever that is) and get upset over REALLY STUPID stuff....not so much.
Have a nice day!

What's all this fuss about osterizing a Sploofuser? Those machines aren't designed for a whole adult human being, and you're likely to make a big mess of your kitchen. If you want to spin somebody around in a home appliance, it's much better to use a dryer.
