I was wondering if anyone has dogwatch or invisble fence I am trying to decide between the two and would love to have some input from my fellow Islanders Thankyou in advance Eileen..

I don't know what Dog Watch is but we put in an invisible fence. Our Weimaraner is so hyper and spastic that she ran right through it and it never even fazed her. Clyde, the big guy is so, well, big that it was pointless with him. We put in about an acre of the invisible fence. It was a big investment. I guess you're supposed to walk your dog to the borders of the fence and "teach" them that its a no no. Screw that. I wanted something that would knock them on their back if they kept going after hearing their collar give the warning beep. Oh well.

We have three acres fenced in and it works fine. But my golden, depite being brave and loyal, is a total wuss, so the boundaries work well.

My old dog was a hunter and just blasted right through the fence a few times chasing varmints.

Then, interestingly enough, the system works to keep him OUT of the yard...

So in my experience, depends on the dog.

As the others have said, the invisible fence is highly unreliable. One of the biggest issues with the invisible fences is although they may keep some dogs in, it's not going to keep other animals (or people) off of your property. I was told that with my Elkhounds being "sight hunters" that they'd never be safe unless they had a 6 ft fence (preferably stockade) and even THEN, they should never be left alone.

I think the problem arises when dogs realize that the "shock area" is a band and not the Rest Of The World.

With my psycho hunter dog, we wound up doubling up the line to expand the width, and putting the collar to Klingon stun, and disable the warning buzzer. I thought his head was going to pop off. Still didn't work for my one dog. He'd actually trot up to the line sprint across, and go back to a trot.

My current dog is such a wuss that she wouldn't leave the garage to pee after we put it in.....thought the whole world was going to shock her. Now she runs up to the line and stops. We don't even put the collar on her.

As a tool for border training, it is excellent, especially for the 99.99991 percent of dogowners who don't have the patience or skill to border train.

So, as I said, depends on the dog. I had an "A" and an "F" experience.

We gave up and just put up electric fence. The horses and the longhorn laugh at it after a few times, no matter what. The deer jump over and never notice. The dogs learned quickly and won't go near it, whether it's turned on or off. Well worth the money, especially if you live anywhere near a winding country road where an animal might get killed or cause damage/death to people.

Worse than the country road is that i am smack in the middle of ten acres with train tracks on both borders of my property I have lost two dogs that way one hunting rabbits I think? and the other looking for one of our girls I just want to try keep my Lucy safe.. thanks for the comments i appreciate them all and I guess it is worth a try?dogwatch is another system of invis fence which has a patented FM reciever for the collars which they say will stop interference from other signals, which so far invisble fence brand does not so I will give them a try I have no choice plus I will border train Lucy as you suggest Smaug Thanks a million everyone...
