Drat. I just woke up and it's already tomorrow in Eastern Australia.

Oh well, we can still celebrate Wayne Gretzky's Birthday.

Found this on Google:
Australia Day, celebrated annually on 26 January, is the official national day of Australia, commemorating the establishment of the first European settlement on the continent of Australia.

Happy 26th!!

Not going to reply to your mesage, Bushy....
I'm really hurt that Australia has issued a Traveller's warning
about Canada!!!!
Apparently we have nothing but Avalanches, Forest Fires, Mud Slides
and Terrorists!!!!
Actually - your government forgot about our French Fur Trappers,
paddling in a canoe with an Eskimo dog and a rifle!!!!

OMG Rowlanda! I totally love Canada....the only problem I ever encountered there was from over-zealous Customs Officers after 9/11, who detained us for two and a half hours for NOTHING.

I spent Australia Day with my eldest daughter in Sydney. I travelled down by train: it was great to see flags everywhere, and folks just out for the day, having a great time!

Cheers!

Thank you Marilyn....that is SO cool!
I will send it off via email to all my Aussie mates.

BTW, Donden...Monday the 28th is the public holiday, the real commemorative date is the 26th of January. Many Aussies are making a 3 or 4 day weekend of this!
There were street parades yesterday, and fireworks last night! A large park not far from here is having a four-day celebration with a carnival and rides for the kids, BBQs, picnics, stalls, bands, comedy acts and fireworks every night.

Cheers, Bev

Sat 26th is Australia day but because it falls on a Saturday we get Monday off as well. So it's turned out to be a 3 day celebration. A lot of people go to the beach for a "big breakfast" of bacon and eggs slapped between two slices of bread, Champagne and to get to know others from their local community. At lunch time friends and family get together and have a barbeque and plenty of alcohol especially beer because it's pretty hot. The Australian of the year is announced. It's Lee Kernaghan - country music legend. The Australia Day Honours list is published - all those people who do good stuff! There's lots happening around Sydney Harbour - Ferry races and fireworks. But mostly people just have a day off work, get together with friends and do whatever they want. No hard and fast rules or traditions because it's only been a little over 200 years that we've been here and it takes us while to get things organised in Australia. Happy Australia day from an Aussie. Jo

Australia Day, celebrated annually on 26 January, is the official national day of Australia, commemorating the establishment of the first European settlement on the continent of Australia. The date is that of the foundation of a British penal colony at Sydney Cove on Port Jackson, New South Wales, by Captain Arthur Phillip, who was to become the first Governor.

Australia Day is an official public holiday in all states and territories of Australia.

.........So there ya go. All this time I thought it was the anniversary of our Federation in 1901!! (That was the FIRST of January, apparently?)

I'll ignore that last remark but I found an Australia Day quote - by Manning Clark an Australian historian, "on January 26, 1808, the anniversary of the founding of the colony was observed in the traditional manner with drinking and merriment." Things haven't changed much.

God Bless the Aussies. Does anyone else see the irony in that if you want to emigrate to Oz, as a Brit, you need thousands of dollars.....yet all it cost my great great grandad was a moment of madness and an overzealous legal system? AND....If Oz is SOOOO good, how come there's so many of them in London?.... Only joking - Happy Australia day mates, How's yer bum for grubs?
