POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

"Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end." Prolly seen this, but thought I'd share anyway.

I dunno. Of course political correctness is sometimes carried to ridiculous extremes, but the flip side is that the term is just as often used dismissively of simple human sensitivity.

Way to go, Smoke! Your comment was right on. As for, "THE ONLY TRUE MINORITY - IN THE US, AND IN THE REST OF THE WORLD - IS WHITE MEN..."--white men may no longer comprise a majority of the population, but "the only true minority"? What makes a minority "true"? And even if they are a minority in the general population, how about the proportion sitting on boards of major corporations? Serving as CEOs? In Congress? Serving as federal judges? White males as a group may not deserve the abuse that is sometimes heaped upon them, but they sure as heck don't rate special treatment.

Susan,
I can't tell from your response exactly how you feel about my comments.
However....to clarify....white men are only almost half of the white
population!!!! White women make up slightly over half of "white people.
The rest of the world....the countries in which population growth is huge
....is made up of people with varying degrees of skin pigmentation.
ERGO - white men are the only REAL minority....

The Greek Poet Menander would be hiding out with Jimmy the Greek, Don Imus and Bill Clinton for his faux pas: "I call a fig a fig, a spade a spade". Would he be sipping a latte with Dan Rather, or what?

There will always be people raised differently or from another age bracket (see Lodi's post on how she was raised, as she qualifies in both categories) that will not be using the same nomenclature as every one else. What a great country we have where we must not offend lawbreakers for fear of hurting there feelings.

God Bless America. If the use of our Lords name offends you feel free to head for a Universe that he did not create.

Is coffee awesome or what?

The anti-profiling crowd, a major subdivision of the Politically Correct Society came out of a Chinese restaurant in a huff.

"What kind of place is that?" said Phil. "All I wanted was some tacos."

"Ya," said Jan. "I asked for a pepperoni pizza and they looked at me like I was crazy. What's up with that?"

"I'm still hungry," said Phil, turning toward the Italian restaurant down the block to the left with a few of the others. "Maybe I can get some decent fried rice at that place down the street instead."

"I still feel like that pepperoni pizza," said Jan, turning up the block toward a Mexican restaurant with the others. I'll see you back at the office."

"Okay, replied Phil. "We really do need to get into creating the plan for identifying possible terrorists."

My Biggest Gripe (not really incorrect - but why do people ignore this??)

I want the taxpayers to vote whether or not our elected leaders get a raise - I still can't comprehend why this has not been taken care of before - can you guys imagine if we could just give our ownselves a raise without or boss passing on it, and then when he realized it he couldn't do anything about it?

I understand your point, Kaelin, but the raises they give themselves are nothing compared to the huge contracts they throw to their friends and business associates, plus assorted other bribes, kickbacks, and earmarked funds. (See Halliburton)

Rowlanda, I am sorry I didn't make myself clear. The only way white men can be considered a minority is if you look at the population as WHITE or OTHER, which gives rise to a host of problems. How do you define "white"? What about those of mixed heritage? What "side" are we going to put them on? What about blue-eyed Spaniards? Black Dutch? It is simply neither possible nor desirable to divide the world into WHITE and OTHER. Sociologically speaking, a group of people can be considered a minority if they have few votes or little representation or power compared to other groups. Again, this is not true of white men. I have nothing against white men. I've been married to one for 42 years. But they are not a "minority."

Susan....much as I hate to dwell on discord....
Having for many years been a divorced - single mother - of mixed race
I have experienced the worst of Racism and Sexism all my life.
The WORLD defines people as "white or other" "male or female"

I don't subscribe to this "Orwellean" trend of changing the meaning
of words, to support or inject a point of view....
(See "1984" and "Brave New World")
There are only two historic meanings of the word "Minority"
a) Under the age of consent.
b) The smaller of two sets/groups of people/things
(See American Heritage Dictionary)

Power and Influence never were - and are not now - a criterion

Rowlanda Dear, I have been saying that I am a minority since the 60's and you have voiced your opinion well. Here is where I feel that I have been a minority for the last forty years. I went to work everyday, except when sick or injured. I paid all my bills on time. I have been married to the same woman for over 30 years. All the children I have fathered have my name. My wife has been a stay at home mother, all our marraige. Myself and all my family have "never" done drugs. I have not had a drink since 1983.
I am not religious, but I believe there is a god somewhere, when I find him, I think we'll be friends. I could bore you with more reasons for feeling that I'm a minority,
I think you get the idea.

Rowlanda, both The American Heritage Dictionary on my bookshelf and the one online include this definition for minority: A group having little power or representation relative to other groups within a society. Whether you agree with that as a definition or not, it is listed in your own source. And language does change. Language reflects culture. There is nothing Orwellian about that. As a matter of fact, in "1984," the ruling party did not change language but merely reduced it, under the theory that if the people didn't have the words, they wouldn't think the thoughts. So attempting to limit the meaning of language is much more Orwellian than allowing it to grow.

OKAY....OKAY
I guess you could divide people into two opposing groups
Liam - you are in the group who are Stable Versus Erratic
Jeremy - you are in the group of Right people versus Mistaken people
Rick - you are in the Sane group versus the Insane.
(Not sure if that puts you in the minoirity or the majority!!!)
I'll go with the Fish - but only if it comes with Chips and mushy peas....
Susan - I guess you could be one of the "Haves" versus the "Have nots"

My whole point was you can't divide people into just two groups--except for people who read Newsweek/Time from the front and people who read it from the back. And people who peek at the last page of a book and people who would never peek. And people who can resist answering Jeopardy questions aloud and those who can't. And people who like Word Rounds and people who like Word Puzzles. . . .I read Newsweek from the back but never peek at the last page of a book, answer aloud, and prefer WRs. So maybe we have something in common, Rowlanda. As for being a have or a have not, there were no silver spoons in my family!
