splendid puzzle except that one included a word I've never seen before; and even after filling it in I am not any wiser - I assume it was a sploofus abbreviation (or a misprint). With one letter outstanding in the word I was down to six letters and luckily guessed right -- but clearly what I filled in was not English!
Cost me the lead in the event; guess I'd better read up my sploofus manual.

I had the same word. I emptied the alphabet trying to figure it out. Still don't know.

This must have been fun for those in on the in-jokes.

Bailed. I have no fun in these puzzles where you have to just look down and punch the ten most common letters in before you can even bother looking at the puzzle.

Hey Jim....
Love the dye job!!!!
And Lodi....
You get younger every day!!!!
I reckon the people who got the best scores on this puzzle
are all Editors....because they know so well what annoys
the rest of us feeble-minded dwebes....
Just in case anyone's wondering, I am about a third of the
way from BC to Ontario - took the time to connect to the
Web, because I'm holed up in a motel in Golden. There have
been a lot of avalanches and the P-T-B keep shutting down the
TransCanada Highway to deal with them....Guess I shouldn't
complain but I wish they (the avalanches) had waited until
after I had reached another Province!!!!

Rowlanda, It probably would've been longer, but you could've used Interstate 90 or 80 and went that way.

Talk about an uneven playing field! I had the mystery word as well and wasted *17* moves trying to fill two boxes, which at the moment is the difference between eighth place and 65th. Awful.

Fun quiz but I like more educational stuff - I didn't learn anything from this quiz. LOL

Mystery "word" got me too. difference between top 10 and 58th.

Oh, well.

Nice thing about screwing up a WP is you know there'll be another along in a bit.

Is/was the mystery word "SQAG"?

That is the acronym for the Sploofus Quiz Authoring Guide. You can find it online under "Your Sploofus Space --- Trivia Quizzes", among other places on the site. It is the collected rules for creating quizzes. Everyone who has written or aspires to write a quiz should familiarize themselves with it. It is a fascinating read, on a par with the user guide for a Popeil Veg-o-matic or the service manual for a 1964 Alfa Romeo. I am yet to find a telephone book that can surpass it in even the finest hotel rooms.

Truthfully, it does contain the answers to many support tickets that we handle. As editors, it is the rules we must follow in approving or rejecting quizzes.

Thanks; that was indeed the word.
I thought I should have known it.
Sploofus; how many of the top ten players had this clue please?

(still a fun puzzle)

Well Gary, I definitely didn't finish top 10 but, I did get that word and knew what is was..probably just because I had schosen the S and A, plus the context of the rest of the puzzle clued me in

Lisa, same with me. Got the SQAG (probably because I've had to reread it a few times... before submitting a quiz), still missed the top 10. I thought it was clever and may have referred to a thread a long time ago where players made up Sploof editors names they'd like to be called if they became an editor.

I got it - but I had to really think about the acronym...and since I ended up at 90, I probably don't count

"The following characters can NEVER be placed within a quiz title:
@ # $ % ^ * _ = + ~ < > / | { } [ ]

Quiz may take from 1 to 30 days to launch depending on availability of editors."

This Means the *%?]@*> editors can leave your quiz in their ?*%^_$#@%& hopper while they sit by the pool in Las Vegas!

I was in the top 10, I did not have the mystery word, and I am not an editor.

I have had the same situation on other puzzles, so I know how you feel. In the group of 10 puzzles, there always seems to be 1 or more that are harder to get than the others. When your 5 puzzles are picked, sometimes you get 1 of the hard ones and sometimes you don't. If you have played this game very much you have been in both situations the same as the rest of us.

Acronyms are tough at the best of times. This one -- which is unfamiliar even to those of us who have read it -- was a ridiculously difficult obstacle, especially when "phony Sploofus rules" would have been just as accurate.

Don't like to boast but I guessed SQAG immediately!!!!
And it's not that I'm in the habit of writing quizzes....
Just that we too often see messages from evil-minded Editors
who quote the SQAG Rules like they were the 10 Commandments!!!!
