Since I'll never find out directly, because my average for Word Rounds is about 48th and for Word Puzzles 148th, how many points do you get for 1st, 2nd and 3rd?

7500; then 5000 going down by 500 to 10th which is 1000.

Yeah, I'll never know either. One time I was 10th right up to 7pm. At 7p, I went refreshed the page, it went to the new puzzle, and somehow ended up 11th! I doubt I'll ever get that close again. It was just a fluke.

Garry's answer is for WR and WM; for Word Puzzles it's 1000 each for 1st-5th, 500 for 6th-10th, then 290 for 11th shading on down to the lowest I've got a note of, which is 203 for 286th.

From which you'll gather that the real points in WPs are for not losing any more of your initial 5000 than you have to while playing them!

Thanks for the info! Seems disproportionate to me - to get possibly close to 15,000 points every hour for 20X2 seconds work and yet spend hours writing a quiz and it disappears before you even get a look in. Phooey!

Jank, assuming you're talking about a WP, the cut off time to *start* a WP is 8pm Sploofus time, but the system allows people who start their puzzle minutes or even seconds before the hour, time to *finish* them up to fifteen minutes later. At that time it calculates the final positions and points and sends out the notification emails.

In the meantime, those who've finished their puzzles before the 8pm cutoff are free to begin the new puzzle.

So while you were 7th at 8pm (or whatever time it is for you), obviously a number of people hadn't finished their puzzles at that time and, of the ones who finished during the fifteen minute grace period, four did better than you and you were pushed down to 11th for the final positions. I have to admit that doesn't surprise me, some of the the top WP players have said they will leave it until the last minute before playing.

So, anyway - that's why you can be at 7th place at 8pm, but at 11th when the emails come out.

Hope that helps!

No, I figured that was what it was. I'm just saying I won't be getting my hopes up any more because there's just no way to know - it ain't over till it's over.

One freaky thing though. Once I was in the middle of a WP at the cutoff time (7pm CDT where I live) and after I submitted the 3rd puzzle the next clue was to the new puzzle - it changed mid-stream. That was a hoot! ha

I've never known the clues to change midstream. However, at 8 EST the title of the WP does change to the title of the new WP even if you are still working on the old one (this can be a bit distracting at first!).
