WORD ROUNDS

Someone just got a Word Round in .84 seconds. I may be old and slow and I don't ever expect to reach #1 in word rounds but .84 seconds, how is that possible?

Sploofus server hiccup.

Fluke time caused by a malfunction in the server.

here is my first possible "whine" since joining- all the flukes I've noticed [and there have been about a dozen-] - have gone to the fastest players on a regular basis. I'm sure the computer equipment is a factor in increasing the speed.

Has any player whose computer uses DSL instead of a high speed cable modem-- gotten a fluke?

If not, my IRS stimulus check might be purchasing something.

I'm on dialup and I got a fluke once, tho no one probably knew it because it was still a slow time compared to the speedies here. But for me, it was a fluke cause I'd NEVER gotten that fast before. It was either high teens or in the twenties, but if I normally get under 40 seconds, I've done well. So you can see where I'd notice anything below 30 as a fluke.

Al, it may be that we only notice the superfast flukes because it can reduce a fast time to a rather questionable time. If someone who normally gets 30+ seconds completes in 20+ seconds, we tend to think they've played a really good round but don't think of it as a fluke (unless the Sploofer suspects/tells us otherwise)! Bearing in mind it's a software glitch, I'd have thought they would be totally random.

Flukes aside, computer equipment and internet connection, amongst other things, definitely contribute to speed. When I play a couple of rounds at work during my lunch hour, I average around 10 seconds slower than at home (computer much slower, horrible mouse, monitor smaller - I can only see 2 WR questions at a time and on WMs I can't see the answers at the same time as the last few questions. Also the WP takes at least 3 times as long to enter a letter)! My sympathy and admiration for those Sploofusers who have this all the time!

Thank you Karen [Nelly] for the very helpful and comforting information.

Based on your observation, I feel that someday I will break into the "teens" if I purchase a more powerful computer. There is a thrill getting into the top 10 in WR and WM's. Of course, you still need 100% accuracy, and that is a challenge for everyone.

I'm "game" for the challenge ahead.

Good luck to everyone in similar situations.

Al, You are a great guy !! I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you're definetly hooked on this stuff. Be like me a, "Loner and a Rebel", just like PeeWee.
I threw in the PeeWee reference so the smartasses think they could give me a zinger.

There are things about PMB that we "couldn't" understand. Things we "shouldn't" understand.

I've had flukes on dialup. Al, you're in for an e-ticket ride, buddy. I still remember vividly all my milestones in climbing the WR charts. It was a blast!

Great. I finally kick ass and get a .84, and suddenly everyone questions it.
