WQC - WORLD QUIZZING CHAMPIONSHIPS JUNE 7TH 2008

The WQC - World Quizzing Championships will be coming on Saturday, June 7th 2008.

For those of you who participated in or heard about the TAQ - Transatlantic Quiz the WQC will be in a similar format, but the questions will be submitted from various countries around the world (and translated back into a number of languages). Thus far there will be locations for the quiz in Australia, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, India, Latvia, Liberia, Lithuania, Malaysia, The Netherlands, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, with the USA, Canada, and others joining in.

The questions will be a bit more diverse, and thus a bit more difficult on average in the World Quiz. However, they will remain relevant to all-around knowledge and not drift into minutia. There will be the same categories as found in the TAQ:

Culture: including Architecture, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Museums, Religion, Mythology
Entertainment: including Music (Classical, Blues, Film Score, Jazz, Rock, World), Ballet, Musicals and Operas, Radio, Television
History: including Ancient and Modern, Current Affairs, Exploration, Famous People, Historic Civilizations
Lifestyle: including Costume, Design, Fashion, Food & Drink, Handicrafts, Health & Fitness, Human Body, New Age Beliefs, Products & Brands, Tourism
Media: including Movies (old & new), Literature, Poetry, Drama, Comic books, Language
Sciences: including Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Social Sciences, Fauna & Flora, Physical geography
Sport: Track and Field, Team Sports, Motor Sports, Winter Sports, Olympics, Equestrian Sports, Games, Hobbies & Passtimes, Sporting Records
World: Human Geography, Cities, Space travel, Technology, Transport, Inventions

It is still an individual test. However, the WQC will be more stringent than the TAQ in that the start times need to be coordinated +/- 2 hours worldwide, so while the western Pacific rim will be starting late evening, North America will be starting in the morning. Also, the host will need to be an independent proctor at any site (they can't take part as was the case in the TAQ).

A new site is not up yet, but last year's website can be found at http://www.wqc2007.com plus more information soon at http://www.iqa.be/ and http://www.iqagb.co.uk/trivia/index.php (under "Quizzing Events"

As the USA representative, I'd be interested in thoughts about places to hold the WQC, including volunteers who may have connections to facilities which would lend themselves to this type of quiz, plus the availability of other trivia events that could take place later on that Saturday to create events that would have other types of trivia including team events, events with emphasis on speed of recall using buzzers, things along the lines of the urban challenge or "The Game" etc. Post your ideas here, or send them along to iqausa@gmail.com

We are in the process of voting on and then translating the questions to be used in this event which have come in from around the world. If you have a site that has an independent person available to serve as a proctor on the morning of June 7th, please contact via iqausa@gmail.com for additional info.
