I was hoping, a kind fellow sploofuser who still bakes bread from scratch, would share their recipe with me. My recipe is old & I haven't made any in years. Need something that works with the modern yeast, measurements & such. I'd like to try both white & whole wheat. Thanks

Sorry Randy - the only homemade bread I will make now is in the bread maker and that's not very often.

This weekend I'll try to find the recipe my mother used. It was simple and delicious.

Thanks Pat, bread from the bakery is now up to $2.75 a loaf. Yikes

Here's my mom's recipe:

1 package yeast in 1/2 cup warm water
1 3/4 cup scalded milk, cooled
5 cups flour plus more for use during kneading
3 Tbs. sugar
1 Tb. salt
3 Tbs. soft shortening
1 cup raisins (optional)

Mix all ingredients. Knead for 10 minutes on floured surface. Let rise once, until double. Form into loaves and let rise again. Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes.

Simple and super good!

Hi Randy,
I'll ask my mom for my grandmother's recipe for white bread. It was scrumptious!

Prior to developing Parkinson's, my mom made wonderful zucchini bread, if you'd be interested in a recipe for that as well.
