Q ABOUT WP RANKINGS

Okay, so I decided to try and do every WP in April.

How do the WP ranks work?

Am I right that you seem to just get a few hundred points for being 1st or 5th or whatever, and the rest is the points deducted from 5000 for misses?

That seems really stupid. The guy that finishes 500th but stumbles through without letter misses gets more points than the guy who finishes 5th with a few bad guesses.

That seems pretty dumb. I would think you should get like 10,000 scaled down to 5000 for being in the top ten. The missed guesses thing is just a sideshow.

Does this make sense? Smaug drunkie.....

Bonus is 1000 for 1st through 5th, 500 for 6th through 10th.
Then somewhere between 299 and 200 for the balance?
My impression is that the system works well but I'd like the quiz that starts at 8PM on the last day of the month to go towards the new month --whether you do it before 12 pm or after (currently if you do it before 12 it goes to the old month).

I'm trying to figure how I can be 15k back already. I don't think I've missed a quiz.

I agree with Gary. I start every month with a 5000 point disadvantage because I won't wait till after midnight (or get up early) to do the last WP of the month. Also my habit of bailing on puzzles that piss me off keeps me out of the top 100,,,,,and that's all my fault. Seems odd that the least amount of moves counts in the daily standings but doesn't account for anything for the month.

I just posted smaug a note about one other odd thing that happened this month; the April 1st puzzle. The three leaders scored about 4K plus bonus on that; the rest of the world got zero. Put the March 31st puzzle and that one together and its easy to build a 10K lead over someone who did the first puzzle early and blew out on the second.

I agree with this.

Barry, Maybe it should just work off EST and have no variance. Some parts of the word are different in time, you have to have a start and a finish somewhere. Watch those Cubs this year.

You have to start and finish somewhere, but the cut-off should be based on the puzzle. If a baseball game goes extra innings and lasts past midnight, it still appears on the scoreboard for the day it started and not the day it ended.

Hi,
I think the point that Barry is trying to make is that if you did the WP for March 31 before midnight, your points went toward your March total. If you did the WP after midnight, your points went toward your April total. Thus, some people might feel that those doing the WP after midnight get a headstart, so to speak, on April points. (I don't know how Sploofus manages time, i.e. when I say "after midnight," I don't know if that means after midnight wherever you happen to be playing or after midnight EST.)

Like Barry, I'd like to see some standardization on this. The point about baseball is well-taken. So, let's take the upcoming 8 p.m. April 30 WP, for example. Everyone who participates in that puzzle, no matter at what time, would have their points applied to April, not May. This seems to make the most sense to me and would be fair to everyone, agreed?

Now for Smaug and others wondering about bonus points, I found the following post from Justin regarding this, and this system still seems to be in effect:

"Mon, 19th Dec '05 1:06 AM EST
The WordPuzzle Scoring System has Changed!

All players now begin each WordPuzzle with 5,000 points. Every time you select a letter that IS NOT IN the phrase, 100 points are deducted from your "Point Reserve". A nominal amount of bonus points will be given to the players at the end of each puzzle who are able to complete the puzzle in the least amount of moves.

This new scoring system will substantially level the playing field for all of you hard working Sploofusers!

At the end of each WordPuzzle (around 8AM and 8PM EST) the 5 players completing the WordPuzzle in the least amount of moves will receive 1,000 bonus points.

Players 6-10 receive 500 bonus points.

Players 11-infinity receive 200 bonus points PLUS bonus points equaling their number of moves divided by 10.

These bonus points are applied to both the monthly WordPuzzle Leaderboard and your all-time Jackpot points. ..."

Well, there is an answer. Thanks, Geri.

Altho maybe the system should be reviewed, since obviously the emphasis has become number of moves with the players, but the points are slated toward avoiding bad guesses.

Except the scoring for 11-infinity doesn't work that way now, and I suspect never did, because that would reward worse performances.

Methinks it should read that places 11-infinity get a bonus of 200 + (1000 divided by their position).
