In the Sploofus Survival Guide, it says, "You must be at least 18 years of age to play Sploofus." When I read this, I was a bit disappointed, since I wanted to send an invitation to join to a friend's 15-year-old son, with her permission, of course. Then I noticed that there are people playing here who are under 18. So, is it OK for me to send an invitation to my friend's son?

Thanks for any info/help!

Refer all under eighteens to Smaug for approval!

hey Geri.

i have wondered about this too. i've had some feedback on quizzes from kids as young as 14. i think teens should be allowed and encouraged to participate. we are a "family friendly" site after all.

perhaps a support ticket is in order for a definitive answer... ???

Yes, I would like to know as I referred some of my seniors (17-18 yrs) to this site. Let us know, please.

Hi and thanks for the replies!
Well, it's interesting that I'm not the only one who'd like to know the answer to this. I'm hoping an editor will see this thread and reply. I'd like to give it some time before I send in a support ticket.

I think Justin keeps that in there as a precautionary measure because I've seen posts in the past that indicated his commitment to having a family friendly site. Even though the agreement is phrased that way, I think Justin has talked about teens and adolescents being able to take the kids only quizzes, etc.

Many topics have come up about this & it has been rehashed (especially in some instances when a post in BBS is deemed inappropriate).

My impression was that it is ok but I think somewhere I read unsupervised kids on the site have to be 13. That might be an incomplete recollection.

Don't quote me on that, as I am not totally versed on every aspect of this topic.

Rules say 18 and up, but "supposed" to be a family friendly site. I wouldn't let my kids join because I don't want them interacting with adults. And in all honesty, I only want to interact with adults.

On the other hand, the trivia quizzes are very helpful to teach children on a variety of subjects and make it fun at the same time.

I can't see where having children taking the quizzes and word puzzles would create any problems. Shouldn't make any difference so far as I can see.

Now if you are talking about having kids participate in the chatroom, that's a different story. I wouldn't let a child on the chatroom; that should be for adults. Guess it goes back to parental (grandparental) supervision.

why have "kids only" quizzes if we don't have kids? Could Justin create a "Sploofus Junior" or something similar - in your spare time of course...

This is true. I've run some other websites in the past and dealt with this issue. National COPPA requirements (federal privacy law) insist that no personal information about kids under 13 be gathered without expressed written consent (mailed or faxed in, not email and not a checkbox on a form) by a parent or legal guardian. Since email addresses count as personal information, and all Sploofus accounts are tied to an email, 13 is the definite legal minimum.

OMG!!! I just realized that I didn't read the rule part that you have to be 18 years old to participate. I'm only 14 so I don't know what's going to happen to me.

Not to worry...eventually you will be 18, and you haven't been struck by lightning yet. As far as I am concerned, hang in and enjoy the site.

I've been a member here since 2006 and my daughter (who was 11 when she joined) has been a member since around the same time. Ironically it was her enthusiasm for this site that made me take a closer look at it. She is now 14 and has always enjoyed taking and writing quizzes. She doesn't frequent the chat forums because it doesn't interest her, it's just not her thing.

I have to agree with Salzypat on being vigilant with regard to kids posting in the forums because it is potentially problematic, legally and otherwise. The educational aspect is wonderful for kids though and there was a Kids Only category for quizzes at one time (not sure if there still is).

I noticed there was a Kids Only quiz put on only a few days ago on 10/19/09 so it must be ongoing. Have fun.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Justin creating a Sploofus Junior in his spare time????????? These 14 year olds will be grand parents before THIS site is fixed. Just let these very intelligent kids have fun too. I took all of Rkmloveshp's quizzes that he started writing when he was 14. I think Sploofus gives the kids an extra learning experience. That rule is just in there to cover "someone's" behind, along with some other rules that were added since October 8, 2009. That is why I put a thread in Salty Dog titled "Be Aware". Come to think of it, I don't remember seeing it lately. maybe it's on a different page or maybe they took it out. If that is the case, one might wonder why it was taken out. I'm not sure if it was or not though.
Horray for the kids that are on sploofus and not out doing drugs!
