I was just noticing that that - looks like the "close to meter" needs tweaking

I noticed the same thing and quickly came here to see if there was a post about it. Something needs fixed. A dash being present or not should not prevent credit for a correct answer.

Many apologies. This puzzle was already in the hopper and unable to edit prior to the discussion regarding punctuation marks. So the mark above the "A" was not included in the possibilities. I have credited your account with 100,000 points. Apologies again.

In response to Illianmy, a mark (present or not) shouldn't count against the player, but unfortunately that mark can make the difference. The way the program is set up the typed in answer must match one of the listed possibilities exactly - making it difficult for us to include all of the possibilities that players may come up with. There was a recent discussion about this after another name with a mark. We are attempting to include the names with and without such marks for future puzzles. The WTHAI admin are also discussing ways to alleviate this problem in the future and limit the possibilities for answers. Please be patient with us. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response, Sploofusmaximus. I was working from the caption of the photograph I found, which used "Ny Alesund" as the town name. Since my Norwegian is a bit rusty, I didn't notice that the hyphen was missing.

Probably the best approach, if it's possible, would be to ignore case and punctuation. Weird foreign letters, unfortunately, have totally different ASCII values than the similar English characters, so they would have to be included among the answer possibilities for copy-and-pasters.

I agree, Lorri! They resolved mine last night promptly along with explanations! I really appreciated it!

So Slicko, did they drain the 100K from your account? Yes, great job editors. There is a ton of stuff now to keep up with.

Re Dyenamite's comment.
I wonder whether we can draw a parallel to what happens at the bridge table when the spectator spots an error in a claim by a defender or declarer and is foolish enough to point it out.
Both declarer and defender get credit for their optimum position and the kibitzer or spectator is fined the difference.
So in this context it would be dyenamite who loses 100K and each players who solved correctly gets the 100K.
Just a thought
Barry

Sploofusmaximus,

Didn't mean to imply I'm not being patient. I was merely restating and emphasizing. I apologize as when communicating with the typed word, things come off snippy when they're not intended that way. I should have been more clear and/or referenced the previous conversation.

It wasn't the mark over the A though that caused the problem...it was the hyphen.

Just so you know...LOVE the new format; LOVE the trivia squares; LOVE the amount of communication between the editors & the players.

My bad for not tempering my criticism with those positives earlier.

Actually, it was the mark over the "A" that caused the problem. The name did need to have the hyphen because that's the official name. No answers were listed without it. Larrybus' answers with the mark over the "A" were correct, but not on the list of answers. I also listed Ny-Alesund by itself and with Svalbard - not Spitsbergen, as Larrybus listed it. I should have included Spitsbergen as well - another oversight on my part.

I didn't mean to imply that you were impatient Illianamy - far from it. I was only encouraging patience in general. I felt badly about all of the recent problems with some of the names and I can imagine how frustrating it must be for the players.
