Q OF THE DAY

I have not had a vocab question for 6 weeks or more; anyone know if it's been taken out of the mix? Thanks!

Re No vocabulary TQOTD: only for players with nine letter surnames.
I had to change my name from a nine letter one to an eight letter one to get back on the vocab option.

Be thankful. I finally got a vocab question today so obscure only 8% of people answering it got it right.

The Vocab. questions seem to get harder lately. Is it because so many were boastuing about waiting for Vocab. questions to get easy points?

I thought vocab was getting a little more difficult as well. I missed two in a row on words I'd never seen let alone trying to remember what it might mean, but then I got one last week that I didn't need the choices for, luck of the draw I guess.

I also have received no vocabulary questions in eons. Also find that questions in ALL categories have been concerned with more remote information-lots of dates and numbers which I abhor. If I get one correct it is most likely pure luck. At one point it was stated that question difficulty would become more difficult as your level increased. Later it was said this had not happened. I do not consider myself a stupid person but if this has become a MENSA site count me out-Linda

Speaking of which, I forgot how to look up the link that show you how well you have done in each category of question. I'm sure I saw it at one point...maybe I dreamed it? There is a way to see what percentage of questions you answer correctly from each category right?

I was pretty busy the last few days, so I had three TQOTD to answer this morning, two in Geography and one in Vocabulary. I was thrilled to have the Vocabulary question and thought about wagering on it, but ultimately didn't. Fortunately, I managed to answer all three correctly. Yippee! I think I'm finally adjusting to the timer, which used to be a big distraction for me.

So far, I've enjoyed all of the TQOTD, even the ones I get wrong.

How many correct answers does it take to get a badge? I've seen new member at level 2 with badges. I answer a lot of questions correctly (an a lot not) but I can find nothing that tells me how you qualify for a badge.
Help!

the badges are awarded when you maintain a minimum of 50% correct answers. a newbie with 2 correct answers on 2 questions in a given category will show a proficiency of 100% for that category.

you lose a badge if your correct answers fall under 50%.

Speaking of QOD, Snooker, badges and all of that-

I have taken myself out of the Sports category because of my utter lack of knowledge concerning anything athletic. I know there are girls out there who kick butt in this category but I will venture to guess that they are in the minority.

Why isn't there a "Shopping" category or say, a "Laundry" category that lots of women (and some men) would be proficient in but that lots of others would have to take themselves out of?

Just wondering- oh and make mine mozzarella on garlic bread please

Re Chyenn's answer. I'm not sure that is the full story -- I wish i could direct you to the rules here.
I think after a while 50% is the key stat; at the start you need better percentages for the badges, but the number declines.

Hi,
As far as I know, the following system is still in effect. I found this info in this thread: http://www.sploofus.com/bbs_detail.sp?post=26041&cID=1

Posted by Justin:
"How it works: "Category Proficiency Badges"

When one first begins playing Sploofus, it is extremely easy to have lots of badges because you have only been asked a few questions in each category. New players only have to answer 3 or 4 questions correctly in a particular category to show 100% proficiency (60% is even easier).

Veteran players who have been served hundreds of questions in each category are at a severe disadvantage to the new players.

To solve this problem, and allow newer player's badges to carry the same significance as a veteran player's badge, the accuracy percentage is adjusted depending on how long you have been playing Sploofus.

Here is the minimum percentage cutoff for diplaying badges, depending on how long you have been Sploofusing:

Less than 2 weeks: 100% accuracy in category
2-4 Weeks: 97% minimum accuracy in category
4-6 Weeks: 94% minimum accuracy in category
6-8 Weeks: 91% minimum accuracy in category
8-10 Weeks: 88% minimum accuracy in category
10-12 Weeks: 85% minimum accuracy in category
12-14 Weeks: 82% minimum accuracy in category
14-16 Weeks: 79% minimum accuracy in category
16-18 Weeks: 76% minimum accuracy in category
18-21 Weeks: 73% minimum accuracy in category
21-25 Weeks: 70% minimum accuracy in category
25-29 Weeks: 67% minimum accuracy in category
29-33 Weeks: 64% minimum accuracy in category
33-37 Weeks: 60% minimum accuracy in category
37-41 Weeks: 55% minimum accuracy in category
42 Weeks or older: 50% minimum accuracy in category"

I hope that helps!

Hi,
"Laundry" -- lol! Anyway, you know, thinking about this, I agree with you! Baseball is the only sport I know anything about. I think it'd be cool to have a Gardening category, for example. Where do questions about plants show up at present? In Physical Science? And a Food/Drink category for TQOTD would also be good, but would likely appeal equally to both men and women. Anyway, a very interesting idea to ponder.

Laundry- now I can write a question or two on that

Physical science and World events are categories I really like and do a little better than the others in.

UTTER cluelessness should not be a criteria for why someone removes themselves from a category. Partial cluelessness is OK- we all have those moments.,

if you know the date and score of that 1935 World Series win and aren't so sure when it comes to "Who Wrote Leaves of Grass?" you will have a big advantage over a person who has no idea about World Series wins, but can kind of guess when Walt Whitman walked the earth and wrote his poems because you can too.

I only use my wager tokens on Movies & TV, but am always irritated when I am asked, after wagering a billion points, who won the 3rd season of Biggest Loser? Quite a WTF moment.

I totally understood what you meant. And the more I think about it, the more I think we should have something like a "Shopping" category. I could think of a lot of good trivia questions, like "What cereal traditionally features famous athletes on the box?" Answer: Wheaties. That would be an easy one. Or, "Of the following, which is *not* a brand of sneakers?" and then list five brands, like Nike, Puma, New Balance, Adidas and Springbok. Another easy one, but you get the idea.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

I've been thinking more about Kimoira's suggestion, and I just wanted to clarify my own thoughts a bit. My earlier posts were half jest. I don't really think we should have a category called "Shopping," but I find it amusing.

I do think Kimoira's basic argument is legitimate, though. I remember I had a TQOTD in Geography, and my brain stumbled over it a bit, I think because it was really a Fine Arts question.

So, I propose three new TQOTD categories: Food & Drink; Fine Arts; and Flora & Fauna. I realize questions in these categories most likely already appear elsewhere, i.e. questions on, say, cheese might pop up in Potpourri, and questions on Flora & Fauna likely pop up in Physical Science. But in what categories do questions on painting, sculpture, etc. pop up? Geography doesn't seem a good place for those, IMO. Anyway, then we'd have 12 categories. Hmmm, maybe we should add another to have a lucky 13.

From a logistics point of view, I don't know if adding categories would be a good idea, but it's interesting to ponder.

All in all, though, I'm having a lot of fun here.

I couldn't disagree more. I love sports, and happen to know a couple two, three things about it.

Tiger's not going to win the Masters this year (much to his chagrin), CUBS rule and the greatest running back ever is Walter Peyton.

Nuff said.

I hadn't seen a vocabulary question in months and in the last three weeks or so I have gotten 6 of them. I have two sitting waiting to be taken. I'm trying to get to the next level before risking a wager because I don't want to go back a to the beginning of the level if I get a insanely hard one and blow the wager.

Smeans......looks like you got all the Vocabulary questions that exist! No wonder none of the rest of us are getting any!!

I have not seen one for weeks either

I opted out of "Sports" coz I am hopeless at it, and most of the questions are American-oriented anyways....?? Wouldn't matter is they were Australian either, I am still a dud at it.

I like Geri/Tresgatos' idea for the extra TQOTD categories........VERY good suggestions, I hope the Sploofus Hierarchy takes note???
I would enjoy all of 'em!

Yay! I just got a Vocabulary TQOTD, and just wagered (and won) a tidy 10M on it.

BTW, PMB...I am sure somebody in the Sploofus Hierarchy stated recently that all the TQOTDs are random in difficulty. Maybe it was once intended that the difficulty would escalate with the level, but I ain't seen it!

I am level at 53.3, and been here almost three years now.

Cheers, Bev

I was just about to post about one of those vocabulary questions that got deleted by Sploof. I saw it, did not bother to research the answer -- and got it for MY vocab wager this am!!

And yes it was a very hard one but the percentage is now up to 10.7% from the 8% quoted in that note. I just got lucky with a 50-50 guess. A billion here a billion there; pretty soon its real money.

Yeah, Kim acknowledged a lot of women "kick butt" in the Sports Soup category, and we know it's a very popular category. I actually enjoy various sports, but really the only one I'm any good at in terms of trivia is baseball. Anyway, Kim's posts really got me thinking, so that's why I suggested we add more categories.

Glad to see some others like the idea, and thanks for putting it in 2.0's "suggestion box."
