DISCONNECTION WITH THE SITE

Bring on the cheese (go right ahead Heidi, this deserves it).

Sry this is for Beta. I have never felt so disconnected from this site. I think it has something to do with the shout box being so small and the missing "Who's Playing" at the bottom.

I used to pop in the shout and say "Afternoon kids", I can't quite put my finger on it, but something is wrong. I have never seen such time gaps on the shout, maybe it's me, but wondering if anyone else feels this way.

Me.

I've been saying that ever since we got into 2.0. People come and go that I never see. It was nice to see who popped on and give them a hello. If the option is given to see who is online at all times at the bottom of the screen, the community part of sploofus will be lost. And that's my favorite part.

I'll leave the "Cheese" to you, Chick. It has become sort of your "trademark" and don't even find it so infuriating any more. Actually I have not played much lately let along overly complain. Perhaps it is because being computer illiterate and I have a bit of trouble navigating the beta site or that I too now feel disconnected. After all my whining about its tardiness in arrival, beta also makes me feel disconnected. Maybe is also the growth of the site which is a good thing, I guess, but the "family" atmosphere--battling or loving is gone-Linda

What I do like about View Online Players in 2.0 is that the players online can be sorted by when they joined, their level, and where they're from as well as alphabetically. Another feature I love on that page is being able to locate players' fact pages by just putting their names in the in the SEARCH PLAYER box instead of having to scroll through a whole bunch of names to locate the pages.

Having said that, I still agree about the feeling of "lack of community" in 2.0, even with having the special interest groups feature.

Agree totally Kelly! Have suggested 'Shout' font size be increased back to 8 from 6 and I really miss viewing the players at the bottom. I used to be able to take everything in at a glance and would shout - now you have to wait for the Shout to load when you click on the page or finish a WR, so you tend to ignore it and carry on. The auto updating of the Shout is great if you're just sitting there watching it, but otherwise !

Has anyone found a search bar to find old messages on the message board in 2.0 by typing in a player's name as in the prior Sploofus? I used to use this a lot to find things. Does anyone know?

I wonder if part of the sense of less community has to do with the fact that not everyone is on 2.0 yet; there's sort of a "them and us" separation right now. I think the groups are going to be fun, but not a lot is happening because of not having all the potentially interested parties here to participate and start some momentum.
I agree about not having the "Now Playing" feature, but I also agree with Maurlin, that there's a lot about the new format that I really like.

There's a lot to like about 2.0, but I agree 100% with Chick (in fact I posted something like that - feeling disconnected - after the first day or two of testing beta.) I thought the disconnected feeling would go away after being in "beta" for awhile. It hasn't. I've gotten used to it, but not crazy about it.

Font size needs to be larger on shout and in the category display page on community chat boards, and players online needs to be all at one glance at the bottom of the page. I believe these things have been entered as suggestions in the bug area of 2.0.

I agree with size of the font, especially when playing for big points.
How about four answer selections instead of five ??? My string of wrong TQOTD's is at 13 in a row, but that's just the luck of the draw. I need all the help I can get.

Diane, as I was reading down through this thread I was thinking exactly the point you made. I think some of the disconnected feeling comes from not everyone being on 2.0, so it is somewhat of a them and us division. I'm hoping that will go away once it goes live for everyone.

I also agree about the online players listed at the bottom being better, but on the other hand, I also like the information that is given in the 2.0 version. I wish there was a way to combine both.

I think Heidi also makes a valid point about the site's growth. When I first joined in the fall of 2006, I think there wer 27,000 or so members. Today there are more than 44,000. But most of those are players who will just do one or two puzzles or question of the day and go on to something else. I think there's still that core of people who post on the chat, and it is growing slightly with some new people particpating from time to time.

We'll just have to keep working at keeping the lines of communication open and working at staying a "family."

I just realized what it is! Our island isn't here any more. Without the island, we have nowhere to be!

The shout should be on every screen, not just the WR/WMs

I agree with Smaug about the shout, it would help especially with the Who & Where thingys.

And again, I don't know exactly what it is, maybe a combo of all of them.

That being said, I do love a ton of the new features...especially the "Whack Sicko" button, that's the best improvement!

I agree with Smaug also! The 'Shout' on WTHAI would be great.

I've noticed that some special players are using their guesses as a shout on WTHAI...

It's not every page, but the shout is also available by clicking on the "Community" tab in 2.0. Unfortunately, you can't do much else there except the shout.

Remember ages ago when I recommended that the shout be on every page and instead we got that one weird shout where everyone could post? It was on the left side of the screen? It was weird. And we also had a separate shout for the WM. So 3 different shouts, when all I asked was for the one shout to be on every page. And then there was that other shout we got where we tested all the bad words? Well I didn't but some of the naughtier players did.
