CLARIFICATION ON SHOWDOWNS

This came up in the chat. If you stage a showdown with another palyer and answer incorrectly but the other player does not answer. Do you win by default?

Yes, after seven days plus one.

I'm going to change the topic a bit rather than start a new thread:

I was just challenged and the question was a geography question.
Because I have exempted myself from TQoTD geography questions
I was under the impression I was also "safe" from getting them as
Showdown questions.

I somehow managed to get the question right, but if I had lost
would I be able to appeal to the powers that be?

This has come up previously in other chat threads. Based on the Showdown guidelines and previous chat posts, the Showdown question is a random question from ANY category and your exemption does not apply. The exemption is just for the daily trivia question (TQOTD). The link for the exemption (under Your Sploofus Space, then under Account Management) specifically calls it the "TQOTD Category Exemption." So I don't think you can expect to use the exemption for the Showdowns. I have exempted Sports, yet I get Showdown questions from Sports (to my chagrin). Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear!

To clarify what I just said above:
The Showdown guidelines don't actually say anything about the exemption. The guidelines just say it will be a random question. But my experience, and the experience of other posters, has been that random means TOTALLY random and not subject to the TQOTD category exemption.

I didn't think you would be credited with a win if you answer the Showdown question incorrectly, even it the person challenged never responds. It would be a Stalemate. As far as I recall, you would have to answer correctly to have a chance at a win.

Is any Editor reading this portion of Chat? If so, please give us an answer.

Actually, Linda you do pick up the points, even with a wrong answer, if
your opponent does not respond. I know that from experience.

I just thought I read somewhere that the exception applied when
you were challenged in a Showdown. Bigdavy's description of the
Showdown rules is correct; I just thought there might be information I
wasn't finding. C'est la vie.

BTW: Davey and Goliath rocks. Always good for a laugh when I was a
kid. Also, always reminds me of Goofus and Gallant from Highlights
Magazine.

Oh gosh, I used to watch Davey and Goliath with my kids when they were little.

And when I was a kid (back when the rocks were still cooling) I always read Highlights Magazine and especially enjoyed Goofus and Gallant. I didn't think anyone remembered them any more. I know Highlights Magazine still exists but I don't know if Goofus and Gallant are still part of it or not.

Goofus and Gallant are in the May 2008 issue, Pat.

Re: Showdowns -- i'm still waiting for Justin to explain why he told us last year that 2.0 WILL allow us to choose the category when we want to issue a challenge since we are, after all, assuming all the risk as challenger. Yet the Beta-testers and at least one editor say that isn't part of the new sploofus.

i have 144 showdown tokens and they are useless to me. i will not issue a challenge if i cannot choose the category from which the question will come.

How likely is it, though, that a challenge will be answered? I have made two challenges with no response, so I gained points even though I, as challenger, had answered the questions incorrectly. I have two more in the hopper with no response so far. Perhaps many members answer TQOTD and don't visit the site very often to check their Command Center? Have any of your challenges ever been answered?

I think you have just been extrmely fortunate or chosen well! There are plenty of challenges answered - after all the challengee has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Some of this may be due to the fact that you are fairly new to Sploofus and still have a relatively small number of points. A lot of people probably played for a short while, then lost interest in the site. As you move up, you'll likely find yourself among more and more dedicated Sploofusers, meaning that you will be more likely to have your challenges answered.

One of the 'skills' you learn is to check out the person you are about to challenge before doing so.
When you hit 'showdown' you will see the name. Dont challenge at once; retreat out of the showdown system then plug in his name and see how he has done on showdowns; (the way to check out the person is to find them in the alphabet list).
Then you can decide whether to showdown or wait.

It would take me (and has taken me) hours to find anyone in the member list--or is there an EASY way?

yes there is an easy way to find anyone's profile.

here is the link to your profile:
http://www.sploofus.com/profile.sp?pu=cujgie

now by replacing your username on the end with another username you can go to their profile.

my user name is chyenn ... try it!

Here's how to find the username for the person you can challenge:

on the 'your sploofus space' drop-down menu above choose 'your sploofus space' then 'command center'.

on that page choose the 'go to showdown' link.

on the new page find the link, 'stage a new showdown', click it.

here you will find "Your opponent will be (username)." and details about the points you will win if you are victorious in the challenge.

copy and paste the username into the link i gave above and you will be able to see all their stats.

good luck!

When challenging someone, if we were able to choose the trivia category for a showdown, do you think that would be giving us too much of an advantage over our opponent?

What I *would* definitely like to see implemented eventually, if possible, is the ability to exclude a category from a Showdown. For example, I have Sports blocked for my TQOTD. So, I'd like to not have to deal with sports questions when I stage Showdowns.

Also, I hope in 2.0 that the challenger will be able to see her/his time for answering the question.

If these suggestions haven't already been sent in for 2.0, could one of the beta testers please do so? Thanks!

Chyenn,

If you are clever enough to make it to level 68 you are certainly capable of winning showdowns whatever the category. Besides if everyone was able to choose their category I think it would bias showdowns way too heavily towards the challenger.
