As a test, I just did a WordRound without reading the question, just clicking on random answers as fast as I could. My speed was about 22 seconds, far slower than most winning entries with their 100% accuracy.

I use a regular mouse with the down-arrow key and am not very speedy anyway, but I can't understand how speeds of 15 or 16 seconds or less, plus 100% accuracy, are doable. My best score with 100%, after a month or so, is 31 seconds. The WordMatch, I suppose, can be explained by someone with a photographic memory - looks once to the column on the left and then answers. But not WordRound.

Well Bradd, some of us put in a lot of hours!
See how fast your times are in say another month - you'll wonder how you ever did it so slowly!

Other factors also contribute: connection speeds/ Broadband width, whether your mouse has a wheel AND you use return at the end of the puzzle (saves a lot of time), only looking for the root word in the clue (if it says 'Fish' somewhere, then 'ichthy-' or 'pisc' would be a safe bet) and also just how good your reflexes are.
Some folks are just naturally faster than others.

Lots of us can do a WR in under 20 secs, some under 15 secs and a few can achieve genuine sub-11 and 12 secs.

My own record, and also one of the reasons I no longer do them, is under 10 seconds. Took me many months, several friends and nearly a job to whittle the time down to that!

Hi Bradd-

When I'm on my work PC (but only when I'm on my break of course!) I can get times of 16-17 seconds with 100% accuracy, it is definitely possible without any of the "flukes" you may have heard about.

I've been playing about 2 1/2 months now and practice has made me faster. Plus, the more you play, the more you can recognize the same words and definitions when you see them again later.

I think the people with the low low times have been playing forever and are familiar with a lot of these words and definitions now, so there's less guesswork involved than for someone who is new.

A lot of the fastest players are platinum level (like me) and we get "unlimited" rounds (actually 1000 per hour but my arm hurts after 20-30 tries!). This allows me to "bail" and try again if I'm having a slow round with lots of tough words. Also, after I get 100%, then I start trying for pure speed, by reading just the first 2 words of each definition and marking the answers as fast as I can. I also scan for keywords but this slows me down. I get a lot of wrong answers this way but sometimes I get lucky. I also used this tactic when I was gold with 10 tries per hour.

When I am doing WR, I maximize my browser window by pressing F11 so I can see more words at once. I am right-handed so my right hand is on the mouse and my left hand is on the Page Down key. As soon as I answer the first screen of words, I press Page Down (with my left hand) and do the second screen. As soon as I answer the last word, I press Enter with my left hand (rather than clicking on Submit). Using Enter is the fastest way to respond to most of the Sploofus games (including the daily question and quizzes).

Now all I need is that photographic memory for WM. Don't have one, and having a tough time speeding up on these.

Maybe these tips will help you get faster. Just don't bump me out of the top 3!

Good luck!

Well Bradd, I don't have a photographic memory - in fact I don't have much of a memory at all! The only way I can get under 20s WMs is by moving the cursor to the answer for the question, whilst I'm reading key words from the following question. I had to work quite hard to train myself to do this and still 'lose it' sometimes! Some WMs are much faster if the answers fall in a nice sloping line down the page instead of far left to far right and back again. Also you get some easier than others, as with the WRs, and you just get a nice rythym going - those are usually the best. The main thing with both WRs and WMs is don't try to read the whole question and loads and loads of practice, as Larefamiliaris said. Get competitive - try to beat someone who is regularly just a little faster than yourself or just set your own target speed and raise it slightly when you can regularly achieve it. Most of the 'speeders' felt the same way as you at first and look at them now! Obviously equipment plays a very large part - with a slow internet connection and low spec PC you'd be at a disadvantage before you start.
Good Luck. Enjoy!

Hi Bradd:

If you want to do better at Wr's you have to learn to scan the definition, eg: I look for a clue such as mineral (usually ends in "ite", adverb(ends in "ly"), fauna(ends in "ii") etc.

You definitely have to be reading the next question as you are clicking the last answer. You sometimes misclick but there's no going back. This takes a lot of practise and you have to train yourself to do it.

All the things Nelly said are also true.

I don't have a platinum membership any more so I wouldn't play so much...LOL.

If you find yourself getting faster you can win more games by not starting until the final 5 minutes of the round. The Platinum guys don't have time to play 50 or 60 rounds to beat you. ha ha

When I was platinum I have played up to 100 times in an hour until my eyes were spinning.

My index finger would start aching..

I was definitely out of control.

Over the the years other people have gotten burned out on WR's and left the site.
If they got too good they were accused of cheating and took it seriously....

Yes. It's a shame - it seems to me people are to quick to jump from thinking 'That's impossible!' to 'They must be cheating!' and despite the many threads with explanations and hints to improve, it still goes on.
p.s. Bradd - I think it was over 6 months before I started to get regularly under 20s times.

When Word Rounds started 30 seconds was a really good time. If you were quick you you could have the first 10 placings to yourself.

It took a while before it only posted your"best" time.

It's rigged anyway. I sent a support ticket 3 days ago about finishing second to someone with a -32.00 time. Was anything done? LMAO!

Thanks all for all the very good replies. I can see how it can make you insane after a while - I get a little nutty myself with only 10 tries per hour. But you've convinced me that scores in the teens are doable.
