Your posts were deleted for being too revealing. If you have an issue with a puzzle, please put in a support ticket.

Thank you.

As stupid and obvious as this will sound, could I get an explanation
for why such measures are necessary?

Please humor me.

Foogs. when someone posts too much detail about a WordPuzzle before it closes, the editors delete those comments.

they usually encourage that member to reposted after the puzzle expires.

I get that. What I'm looking for is a more general theory
that could be applied to the site as a whole.

What's the purpose? Is there a Sploofus philosophy?

I think there is, founded on utilitarianism and yet incorporates retributitive ideology making the idea of tacit consent obsolete

Utilitarianism? Maybe. But why?

Does tacit consent include the social contract?

What the hell are you people talking about?

The post got deleted because it gave away information about a live puzzle.

End of story, no philosophy required.

In a nutshell...different folks will have different questions. What to you is a legitimate concern might be nothing more than a spoiler to me.

So, it's wiser to send a note, rather than post publicly.

Also, in case the person creating the question has indeed messed up, private correction is far preferred to public reproachment.

At least, that's the way I figure it.

I do have a point (and it's oddly fun for me).

My goal here is to understand WHAT is being protected by deleting
certain elements of our discussion. I KNOW that answers can be
divulged and that gives those of us who read the BBS an advantage
(notice I didn't say unfair advantage), but so what?

What are we protecting?

A completely flawed system of gathering points I think.

Is that the main concern?

I know that's some of it just by reading people's cranky comments, but maybe you lose some of the element of a challenge and therefore pleasure when people are cheating? If it's not points or bragging rights, don't know what it could be.....

I'm not talking about Googling; that's outside of the control
of the powers that be. That's been debated to death (even as
we speak).

What I'm looking for -- and Jeremy is close -- is a discussion
of the integrity of the game, and in a larger sense the integrity
of the site. What is it that Justin is selling here on Sploofus
Island, and why are we all willing (and paying) guests?

I have to go now, but I hope to see this discussion go on.

Football as we know it didn't exist when Fillmore was a young man. And it appears he didn't receive a college education (not that many of our "student-athletes" do either).

My first EA quiz was on the guy, so I feel an obligation to set the record straight

That explains why he was never known to have fallen while exiting Air Force One or to have been seen trying to read a book that was upside down.

Justin is "selling" a level playing field to a community that enjoys intellectual challenges. Seeing the answers to a live puzzle gives an unfair advantage, as previously noted. It's unfair to the players who did not see these answers in advance, and also unfair to the players who haven't played and want the same challenge as the other players. This site, the games, and the players do have a lot of integrity and that's why I like it here.

if the goal is a level playing field shouldn't all access to outside information be prohibited when you do a wp?

Are you doing them without a computer hooked up to the internet?

John, little green men transmit the questions to me from aboard the Hubble and then transmit the answers back to sploofus through telapathy, isn't that the way everyone does it?

It used to say on the WP screen (dunno if it still does) that you would be logged off the puzzle if you left the page. I must've been here three or four months before I realized you could click on another page or go to other websites without getting the boot. I found out when I saw my first "debate" about googling on the board. I still wish it really worked that way.

"if the goal is a level playing field shouldn't all access to outside information be prohibited when you do a wp?"

As long as everyone has access to the same pool of information, it's still as level a field as it can be. Whether you choose to use outside resources or just your own brain/memory is your choice.

No one is advocating kicking a cat. The point of this thread is not whether cats should be kicked, but whether one is allowed to post questions or answers for live puzzles. If anyone objects to the wording or sentiment of a WP phrase they need to file a support ticket and the matter will be looked into.

I don't even know which WP this phrase came up in, but I am sure the author did not mean to imply that cat kicking was an approved sport.

What if the resource you refer to is a book or a dictionary? I really don't care how people solve them. I didn't used to google but I've read a lot of interesting things I wouldn't probably have thought to, checking things while doing WP's. As to time on WP's, along with the usual suspects (googlng, phone, company, teenager, potty breaks) sometimes I just sit & stare. I have also gone to Wiki on numerous occasions, once I've got the puzzle but need to check spelling & proceeded to read the whole article before I wake up & realize I need to finish the puzzle. I do prefer Wp's that aren't googleable but those are few & far between. For my upcoming WP, feel free to google, I wrote it that way

Perhaps "Kicking the can" may have been a less-contentious alternative.

Still, it's done..but I am totally certain Martin meant no harm, and that we ALL concur that animal cruelty is deplorable.

I don't look the other way, Jank.

I print out the leader board, stick it on my wall, and do the big shoe dance.

But do you do the big shoe dance on top of the bar? If not, then you're not hardcore.

I missed the puzzle - been out of town. What did the cat do to deserve getting kicked? Poop in somebody's potted plant? Because that usually works for me.

There will be no kicking of cats anywhere around here! Yes, I admit I was powerfully tempted when I saw it in that word puzzle, and I thought for years that Queen was encouraging cat-kicking, but I've mastered the dark urges unleashed by those powerful words, and now I'm on the side of the righteous.

You, sir! Stand away from that cat!

If you play Queen albums backwards, however, you'll see they do tell you to "swing a hamster by the tail."
